For many users, the BlackBerry Bold represents the perfect image of a business-orientated smartphone, and its physical keyboard has certainly won it plenty of fans. The new BlackBerry Bold 9990 adds a touchscreen interface above the keyboard, but returns to a look and feel that we first saw on the Bold 9000. The supposedly classy leather finish has gone, and the Bold 9900 marks a return to a mixture of plastic and metal. Anybody who's used a Bold 9700 will be glad to see that the plastic trim that covers the top edge of the phone that remains unprotected by a standard carrycase has been replaced by a stainless steel rim. Others will be disappointed by the return of plastic elsewhere. But given how slim the Bold 9900 is, now measuring just 10.5 mm from front to back, it seems churlish to complain. At the same time, it's longer and wider, closer to the shape of the Bold 9000 and with room for a larger keyboard. The 2.8'' touch-sensitive display has a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, which is more than enough for the size. It's bright, has plenty of contrast and is reasonably accurate at reproducing colours. The quality is good enough without having to turn the brightness up to maximum, which gives a welcome boost to battery life.
The much maligned handset maker, Research in Motion (RIM) has come out all guns blazing, against the critics. A 1.2GHz processor, an HD camera, a new OS and a very good touch display. But does it really have the correct answer, package wise? The Bold 9900 is undoubtedly the sleekest and smartest looking Blackberry phone we have seen till date. It has a form factor reminiscent of the Bold 9000, but is slimmer and has a classier finish. While the Bold series of phones had become smaller after the original Bold 9000, the Bold 9900 goes back to its roots. What the slightly bigger (than the Bold 2 and Bold 3) form factor does is allow for a very comfortable keypad. Not that the Bold 2 or Bold 3 keypads were any uncomfortable, but this one just feels that much better. The display and the keypad take up equal space on the front panel. The brushed metal frame adds a classy touch to the entire package. While the phone falls in the ‘big' category, it isn't uncomfortable to hold or use. The slightly rubbery grip ensures that it wouldn't slip normally. Despite having a very sleek form factor, the Bold 4 still feels on the heavier side, weighing about 130 grams.
A brand new OS, more speed, a facelift and a high-res touchscreen, the latest of the Bold messengers is listening for the roar of the crowd. There's no going back to the old rational and composed self - give it danger, thrills and excitement. The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 is stronger, faster, better. No ordinary messenger, it's the bearer of good news. Although on a second thought, a snappy 1.2GHz processor, the new BlackBerry OS 7.0 with Liquid graphics and a super crisp VGA touchscreen are no good news for the competition. Nor is HD video, dual-band Wi-Fi and NFC support. And all that comes on top of the standard BlackBerry package. The solid build quality and corporate grade email and data security go without saying. The sharp precision of the trackpad and a responsive capacitive touchscreen balance each other in a device that's convincingly comfortable to handle. Add a standard-setting QWERTY keyboard, and you have a phone which puts you in charge. To begin with, the Bold Touch 9900 is bigger than the preceding 9700 Bold series. It's actually more of a return to the BlackBerry 9900 styling, with a larger screen and body.
Research in Motion is sailing through troubled waters at the moment but if smartphones like the Bold 9900 are what we can now expect from the company, we reckon the Canadian firm will be with us for years to come. The latest Bold is without a doubt the best QWERTY-based smartphone on the market today. The new Bold sports similar looks to its predecessors though there are some additions that make the phone look a little more up-to-date. The frame of the phone is surrounded by a steel strip for instance and this contrasts nicely with the otherwise mostly black body of the device. The rear of the smartphone is, unfortunately, a fingerprint magnet but does look good thanks to a carbon-fiber-inspired design. This rear end also offers a good deal of grip and so is less likely to slip out of your hand when you aren't paying attention. The phone exudes solidity too and thus should stand up to rough use, and time. With dimensions of 115 x 66 x 10.5mm (H x W x D) the Bold 9900 is shorter in height and thinner in width compared to Samsung's Galaxy S II (also reviewed in this issue). However, as the Bold measures 10.5mm thick it is noticeably thicker than the Samsung. Compared to the older Bold 9780 however, the new Bold is taller, wider and heavier but thinner at 10.5mm versus 14mm.
The new BlackBerry Bold 9900 on T-Mobile will delight owners of older BlackBerries who have been waiting for an upgrade. But while the hardware is shiny and new, the Bold 9900's "new" OS is too similar to older versions to make a real difference. While the Bold 9900 finally gets a competitive WebKit browser and capacitive touch screen with BlackBerry OS 7, this cell phone is still no match for T-Mobile's awesome range of high-end Android devices. Design, Connectivity, and Call QualityMuch of what I wrote in the BlackBerry Bold 9930 ($249, 3 stars) review also applies to the 9900. Externally, the two devices are completely identical; both are classy looking executive-style smartphones. The Bold 9900 measures 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.5 ounces. The 2.8-inch capacitive touch screen offers an ultra-sharp (for its size) 640-by-480-pixel resolution. You still get the usual BlackBerry touchpad underneath the screen, but I find it easier to just tap and scroll using the screen itself, the more I get used to the idea of a touch screen Bold (which is jarring at first, if you're used to older models).
T-Mobile's new BlackBerry 9900 screams luxury from every angle. Impressively thin and sporting both a touchscreen and physical keyboard, this 4G handset is RIM's answer to the growing legion of Android phones encroaching on its territory. But at a staggeringly high $299, the dual-core powered Bold 9900 is priced out of reach for most shoppers. Find out if the most advanced BlackBerry ever to hit T-Mobile has the chops to compete for your hard earned cash.Looks alone will make BlackBerry addicts crave this new device. With its 0.4-inch profile, the Bold 9900 is the thinnest RIM handset yet. Extremely pocket-friendly, the 4.6-ounce phone begs to be shown off. Cast in hues of silver and black, a brushed metal band wraps around the Bold 9900, giving it both strength and elegance. On back is a black soft-touch finish that rings the phone's rear edges and angles towards an acrylic battery door. Here sits the 5-megapixel camera and flash plus metallic logos that seem to float beneath the surface. The top right side contains two silver volume buttons which bracket a play/pause key. Below is a button that launches the camera and doubles as a shutter, but can be configured to activate other functions.
It’s time to take a look at T-Mobile’s new BlackBerry smartphone – the Bold 9900. Obviously, it’s the GSM cousin to the CDMA flavored Bold 9930 , but what separates it is the hefty $299.99 on-contract it’s flaunting and the support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. Will this be the standout BlackBerry to own?Without question, the Bold 9900 is by far one of the better looking and built BlackBerry smartphones of late. Of course, the iterative design improvements we see are dramatic since it’s sleek, attractive, and constructed out of fine materials. Size Visualization ToolSporting a , it’s undoubtedly refreshing to see the handset graced with a touchscreen for easier navigation. Taking into consideration its size and resolution, it’s no slouch in the detail department as well since it’s a pixel density pusher at 287 ppi. Brilliant on so many levels, it’s easily one of its main attractions! Not to be outdone, it flaunts that and is easily by far one of the finest we’ve used. Speed typers will take pleasure in it the most since the layout is spacious, buttons are sufficiently sized, and the responsiveness of its keys are unbelievably amazing., we’re presented with the usual assortment of ports and buttons.
It's been a year since we've seen anything new from BlackBerry, but it looks like it's been worth the wait as the phone maker has now come back to the market with three major devices and a new operating system. BlackBerry looks set to take on the Android handsets and iPhones with the BlackBerry Bold Touch 9900 - which at first may look very like its ancestors the Bold 9700 and 9780, but actually has both a QWERTY keyboard (as you'd expect on a BlackBerry) plus a touch screen. This BlackBerry looks like it's been on a diet - it is slimmer than its predecessors, measuring just 10.5mm thick. Okay, it's no iPhone (which comes in at 9.3mm) or Galaxy S II (8.5mm), but it feels sleek and streamlined to hold; impressive when it's packing a full QWERTY keyboard and a larger screen - the touch display is 2.8 inches, that's nearly a quarter of an inch bigger than that on the 9780. It feels like it would stand up to being dropped if you had an accident, too. Beneath the BlackBerry shell, there sits a 1.2GHz chip, five-megapixel snapper with 720p HD video, 768MB of RAM and a Liquid Graphics display. One of its unique points is that it is capable of making contactless payments, thanks to the NFC chip inside.
There was a time when ordinary folk lusted after BlackBerry phones. Supreme emailing machines used by high-flying business types, they had a certain cachet to them. But since the iPhone and various Android devices appeared on the scene, BlackBerry handsets have started to look tired and dated. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is RIM's latest attempt to claim back some of the cool factor that it's lost over the years. It may look like a traditional BlackBerry from the outside, but, under the hood, its hardware has had a serious upgrade and the new BlackBerry 7 OS is faster, more user-friendly and better able to take advantage of this phone's high-resolution touchscreen. The 9900 is available for free on a £31-per-month contract, or for around £500 SIM-free. The 9900 is undoubtedly one of the best handsets that RIM has produced in quite some time. It feels very well built, yet it's reasonably light and comfortable to hold. The screen is far better than those we've seen on previous Bold models and the keyboard is also excellent. Thanks to the new, faster processor and the speed tweaks that RIM has made to the OS, it's also supremely responsive.
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes as something of a shock. You see, for years, BlackBerry has, in a sense, been catching up. That's not a dig at its parent company – it's practically royalty in push email and corporate handset circles. But it has been rare for RIM to lead the way. Cameras, internet browsing, HTML emails – all were included on RIM's phones years after they'd become standard fare on other handsets. For recent examples of decent phones that didn't really push the envelope all that far, just take a look at the Bold 9780 and 9700.But the Bold 9000 finally offers some cutting-edge tech, and in an attractive package to boot. Its 1.2GHz processor, high-spec touchscreen, brand new OS7 and HD video camera are all specs we never really expected a BlackBerry to have before the next millennium. Plus, the staple BlackBerry offerings of a fantastic keyboard and top-notch security will keep regular users interested. And, for once, RIM is taking the initiative, thanks to the inclusion of a near field communication chip – a fairly new technology that's been talked about for years. RIM is the first to properly take the plunge and add the tech in, while the others dilly-dally about whether to include it.
Apple's iPhone and stonking Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 might be dominating the smart phone world, but BlackBerry maker RIM isn't ready to throw in the towel. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 takes the ancient iconic BlackBerry design and packs it with slick new software and tasty tech hardware. But is it enough to put RIM back in the ring? We've gone hands-on with the BlackBerry Bold 9900, and we're set to infuse your mind-stew with our delicious first impressions. The 9900 will be available in the next month or so, with network and pricing details yet to be announced. The first thing you'll notice picking up the 9900 is that it's really slim, and feels quite light. RIM reckons this is its skinniest BlackBerry yet, measuring just 10.5mm across. Our initial impressions of the build quality are positive -- this feels like a sturdy device, and there's plenty to like about the design too. There's chrome edging around the sides and an attractive holographic effect across the tapered back. The 9900 keeps the classic BlackBerry styling, with an optical trackpad set dead centre, above a full Qwerty keypad. Each button on that keypad is moulded with a slight bump, which we found makes gripping the keys very easy. It also helps you keep track of where on the keyboard your fingers are while you type at speed.
