BlackBerry Bold 2 9700

In Research in Motion's BlackBerry smartphone line the ‘Bold' is the flagship keyboard-based handheld. The current Bold 9000 was released in 2008 and has just been replaced by the newer Bold 2 9700, which retails for a price of US $735.In terms of aesthetics and dimensions the Bold 2 is a far better product than its predecessor. It feels more solidly built, looks great in hand and is smaller and lighter than the Bold 9000. This last aesthetic aspect is particularly important because it strips the Bold away of its somewhat men-only design; most female buyers found the Bold 9000's chunkiness (dimensions) and weight of 136g off-putting. The new Bold weighs just 122g.The keyboard is also unique to the Bold 2 and feels better to work on than any previous BlackBerry we've tested; anyone that used the 9700 found the keyboard became natural to use very quickly. As a result typing long e-mails or chatting with friends and colleagues at length is frustration-free.The 9700 adopts the optical trackpad that we first saw on the low-cost Curve 8520 rather than the usual roller-ball. This is a good move because the trackpad feels slightly more precise to use and doesn't suffer from the various roller-ball-issues that BlackBerry users normally face once the phone is a few years old.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 Review

The original BlackBerry Bold made its debut about a year ago. Even though the original model is still a solid device, it's now time for a flashier, faster model that will make you yearn for an upgrade. The latest RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 is available through T-Mobile and AT&T. We evaluate the T-Mobile version here. As T-Mobile's first 3G BlackBerry, the Bold 9700 not only offers T-Mobile customers a sleek new handset in time for the holidays, but it also offers versatility in the form of UMA support for Wi-Fi calling. While T-Mobile's 3G network may not be as vast as some other carrier's networks, T-Mobile is continuing to expand its 3G service nationwide and expects to offer 3G service to approximately 200 million people across the US by year end. It's definitely nice to see the carrier add more 3G handsets to its lineup, especially a full-featured phone such as the BlackBerry 9700 that can really take advantage of the new network. Compared to the previous Bold, the Bold 9700 features a faster processor, an updated OS, and a sleeker design. It also has an upgraded camera with a 3.2 megapixel sensor and the ability to record video.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 (AT&T)

Even a year after its debut, the original RIM BlackBerry Bold remains one of top-10 most popular cell phones of 2009 and we can understand why. The robust productivity tools, extra-large display and keyboard, and great multimedia performance made it one of the best all-in-one messaging devices around. However, as with all tech gadgets, there comes a time when a product reaches the end of its shelf life and the masses start looking for something better. Fortunately, Bold users and mobile professionals don't have to look too far as its successor, the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700, delivers the goods. Though a bit more of a significant addition to T-Mobile's lineup than AT&T's (since TMO lacked a 3G BlackBerry), the Bold 9700 brings a sleeker design, enhanced features, and more power to make it a worthy upgrade for current Bold owners or AT&T customers looking for a powerful messaging smartphone. Plus, you can currently get the BlackBerry Bold 9700 for $99.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate, which is a great value. Design Anyone coming from the original BlackBerry Bold will immediately notice the design changes on the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700. Sleeker and sexier, RIM did a really nice job of making the smartphone smaller without sacrificing too much in usability.

Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones

The biggest surprise on the 9700 definitely comes when you first switch it on. If you take the battery out of an existing BlackBerry and then start it up, you'll see how long it takes and realise that when you turn it off normally, it's only really hibernating. There's none of that here though, and RIM's efforts ridicule Nokia by destroying the record startup time of 10 seconds that the Swedish manufacturer's Symbian-based phones boast. But what you do realise with this version of the Bold (the 9700) is that it's much easier to hold than the last one (the 9000). And it's easier to see why: the sides of the phone are no longer made of silver- and chrome-plated plastic, but with the same soft rubber seen on the Curve 8520, meaning the phone certainly won't slip from your hands. Looking around the outside of the phone, there are actually a lot of little details that have been imported from the Curve. Indeed, the 9700 looks more like it has been styled as a larger 8520 than a new 9000 (keep up!), and we think it's a good combination of form and function: the new 9700 has a better grip, is smaller and makes for a more refined, luxurious gadget with a more classy look.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 review: Dare you go

Some handsets will work their socks off to have their fifteen minutes of fame, others are simply born into stardom. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 is certainly fortunate to carry a name that stands for popularity and excellence in the RIM family of phones. But this kind of fame can be less a blessing and more of a curse if the successor fails to live up to the standards set by its illustrious namesake. These high expectations have quite often turned otherwise decent handsets into a byword for failure. It's simply not enough to provide incremental improvements when upgrading an iconic handset. The iPhone somehow gets away with that, but Apple usually does. But for regular mobile phone manufacturers it takes something new and it certainly takes something better for the successor to achieve the same kind of success. It's pretty obvious where the RIM R&D team is heading with the BlackBerry Bold 9700. It's hard to really overhaul a handset that was considered almost perfect by most of its users without testing their loyalty, so they embarked on optimization instead. It's not a bad formula for success to just keep the same functionality, stick it in a smaller, fitter body and improve the performance wherever possible.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 Review

In our review of the new Blackberry Bold 9700 we found out that the smaller size and a handful of refinements make the new Bold one of BlackBerry’s best-ever smartphones. It might have been called the Bold Mini had it been born in Cupertino, but those logical Canucks at RIM stuck to numbers. The BlackBerry Bold 9700 takes the stylistic cues and capabilities of its flagship Bold 9000, and scales them down to a more pocket-friendly form factor. The result: BlackBerry bliss. The Bold 9700 and one of BlackBerry’s most petite handsets, the Curve 8900, look and feel practically as if they were stamped from the same die. Both measure exactly 4.29 inches tall and 2.36 inches wide, with the Bold packing just a smidge of extra flab on the belly for a thickness of 0.56 inches and weight of 4.3 ounces with battery. Make no mistake: the extra decimals can’t do much to diminish the superbly pocketable size and weight of the new Bold, which sidles up right next to the very similar Curve 8900 as one of the most portable smartphones we’ve ever tested. True to the styling of the original Bold, the 9700 comes trimmed with a hefty dose of chrome, with a broad swoop on the chin, thin rails of it running up the sides, and another thick stripe on the top back.

Research in Motion BlackBerry Bold 9700

The best BlackBerry available, the Bold 9700 packs a multitude of features into a sophisticated, slimmed-down design. Research In Motion's BlackBerry Bold 9700 ($200 with a two-year T-Mobile contract; price as of 11/4/09) is the finest BlackBerry to date, combining the best of the BlackBerry Tour 9630 and the BlackBerry Bold 9000 in a slim and refined package. People looking for a major update to the original Bold might be disappointed, but BlackBerry fans will appreciate the handset's subtle design tweaks and upgrades. Measuring 4.3 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches, the 9700 is much more pocketable than the colossal 9000 (which measured 4.5 by 2.6 by 0.6 inches). The new handset is lighter, as well, weighing 4.2 ounces (down from 4.8 ounces). Though the leatherette back is still present, it's minimized on this new version--a good thing. (I'm just not a fan of fake leather on a phone.) On the right spine are the volume rocker and the camera shutter/convenience key (a function key that you can program to open any app of your choice). On the left side you'll find another convenience key as well as the standard 3.5mm headphone jack and micro-USB port. Lock and mute buttons are at the top of the device.

BlackBerry Bold 9700

RIM’s flagship Bold 9700 (a.k.a. Bold 2) follows in the footsteps of the original premium BlackBerry Bold on AT&T and features a slimmer design, better camera, and both 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity. Plus, unlike the AT&T version of this smart phone, the T-Mobile 9700 ($199 with two-year contract) lets you make unlimited calls over Wi-Fi. The browser leaves a lot to be desired, but if you want a powerful messaging device with a great keyboard, this is as good as it gets. The first Bold was powerful, but its design felt bloated, especially for those with smaller hands. The 9700 is significantly narrower and a bit shorter than the original, measuring 4.3 x 2.4 x 0.6 inches compared to the Bold 9000’s rather chunky 4.5 x 2.6 x 0.6-inch build. It’s also a much lighter 4.3 ounces, compared to 4.8 ounces. With a chrome border and a svelte polished black face with chrome accents, the Bold 9700 retains its predecessor’s executive-chic look and feel. We also like the soft-touch battery cover on the back, which is made to look like leather. The Bold 9700’s 2.4-inch display is the same 480 x 360 resolution as the Tour, and is a slight improvement over the 480 x 320 resolution on the first Bold’s slightly larger 2.6-inch LCD.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700

It's been about a year since the original RIM BlackBerry Bold made its debut, and while it remains a very solid device, it's about time that a flashier, faster model took over the reigns. And that device would be the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700. Not only is it T-Mobile's first 3G BlackBerry, but its sleeker design and performance enhancements make it a valuable addition to the carrier's lineup. The Bold also offers UMA support for Wi-Fi calls, a faster processor, and an updated OS. The only major downside of the smartphone, and one that plagues all BlackBerry devices, unfortunately, is the Web browser. It simply doesn't stand up to the competition in terms of ease of use or functionality. That said, if you're after a powerful messaging smartphone, the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 certainly has our vote of confidence. It offers more speed and features than T-Mobile's other BlackBerry offerings and gets the upper hand on the T-Mobile Dash 3G with its UMA support. As of press time, T-Mobile did not reveal a specific release date but said the Bold 9700 would be available in time for the holidays for $199.99 with a two-year contract.
