Touchscreen Tablet Reviews

We were really impressed by the Asus EeePad Transformer, an Android Honeycomb tablet that comes with a dock connector which includes an extra battery and a full-size keyboard that adds a whole new dimension of mobility. The Eee Slate is a very different concept, and Asus is using it to try out Windows 7 on a large, touch-sensitive display. Basically, it's a 12.1'' tablet built from laptop components but with a gorgeous IPS screen instead of the bog standard TN display that's usually used for notebook computers. It seems that Asus has managed to get its hands on a great supplier of IPS displays: not only does the Slate have one, but so too do the Transformer and the Slide. The touchscreen display used here has the same resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels as the majority of Android-based tablets. The Eee Slate has an Intel Core i5-470UM processor, a low-energy chip that's normally found in ultra-portable laptops and netbooks, and here it also helps add a little bit of extra power. With 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of SSD, the tablet feels pretty responsive when you boot it up or install new software.

Asus Eee Slate EP121 (64GB)

It may be like a sighting of the Loch Ness Monster (or at least the Jersey Devil), but we might have finally found that elusive Windows touch-screen tablet that doesn't make us want to run screaming back to a traditional clamshell laptop. The Asus Eee Slate EP121 pushes the boundaries of what we expect from Win 7 tablets by casting itself as a high-design, high-powered system, thanks to a fast Intel Core i5 processor and separate Bluetooth keyboard. At the very least it stands out from most of the Windows tablets we've reviewed over the years, the latest being the new Acer Iconia Tab W500P. Windows tablets have typically underperformed in comparison both with more powerful Windows laptops and with other tablets, such as Apple's popular iPad. That Core i5 CPU means that, unlike nearly every other Windows tablet we've laid a finger (or stylus) on, the EP121 responds instantly in most cases, with much less of the sluggishness that has plagued similar systems in the past. The CPU in question is still a bit of a compromise. It's a low-voltage Core i5-470UM, and not part of the upgraded 2011 line of Intel CPUs. That means it lacks the better integrated graphics and battery-enhancing properties of the latest Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs.

Asus Eee Slate EP121 review

There are two kinds of tablet in the world. The first is a new breed of consumer playthings, typified by the Apple iPad 2 and the likes of the Motorola Xoom. These tablets are designed for watching movies, playing games, browsing websites, creating music, taking photos and generally doing a lot of the more entertaining things laptops can do, but in a more-natural way. They're tactile, fun, light, affordable and thanks to the challenge offered by their limited input method, far more intriguing devices than their laptop brethren.Anyone that hasn't had chance to play with the likes of the iPad is missing out. A quick few moments with a copy of GarageBand should have most wondering how they can squeeze such a device into their lives. The Asus Eee Slate EP121 is not one of these machines. It belongs to another group. An older, smaller group. The other type of tablet isn't aimed at consumers. It's been tried, but ultimately it failed to make an impact with the general masses. The last big push to get such machines in the hands of users was back when Windows XP was all the rage, and while some swore by their versatility and natural inputs, most simply swore at them and walked away.
