NB: the Archos 80 G9 is the 8-inch version of the 101 G9 model we have already tested. Some parts of this test, such as the 'Interface and navigation' and 'Multimedia' sections are therfore covered more fully in the review of the Archos 101 G9. Here we have the new 8-inch version of the latest generation of Archos' Android touchscreen tablets. This 80 G9, like the 10.1-inch (101 G9), also includes a less powerful chip than initially announced, the Texas Instruments OMAP 4430 clocked at 1 GHz rather than the 4460 at 1.5 GHz. The 1.5 GHz version will be out next January, following a 1.2 GHz version that will be rolled out across the board for G9 tablets in the forthcoming weeks. The 80 G9 nevertheless comes onto the market at equivalent power to the touchscreen tablets already on the market. To accompany its processor, Archos has supplied this machine with 512 MB of RAM and, on our model, 8 GB of storage. There are numerous connectors along the sides: a mini-HDMI out, a micro USB port (data transfer, recharge, mouse/keyboard connection), a headphones out, a microSD slot to increase storage (up to an additional 32 GB), while the back of the tablet houses the USB 2.0 slot for the optional Archos 3G key, the Archos 3G Stick, costing £40.
Archos was making touchscreen tablets well before the iPad existed, but that doesn't mean the company operates in the shadow of Apple's device any less than the next competitor. Now Archos is aiming to step out from that darkness with the 80 G9 tablet. With a 1080p screen, HDMI output and speedy 1-GHz ARM processor, the 80 G9 will likely turn heads given its $299 price tag. But how does it compare with the increasingly crowded market of budget tablets?Editor's note: Portions of this review were taken from the review of the Archos 101 G9.Our first reaction to the Archos 80 G9's design was "blah"--and that's about how it remained. Its gravelly silver plastic exterior doesn't look flashy or dull, just unassuming. The smooth, beveled and relatively thin shape gears you up for a comfortable experience, but quickly lets you down. As soon as we took hold of the G9, we felt a little cheated. The beveled side edges seem unnecessarily thick, so it's a pretty wide hold and a far reach for your thumbs to get to the middle of the screen when you're holding the tablet horizontally. Also, the front-facing camera is in the middle of the left face of the tablet, right where we always put our thumb.
The Archos 80 G9 is tablet computer running Android 3.2 Honeycomb. It boasts a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of storage and an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. It's Wi-Fi only, but it will be possible to upgrade it to 3G in the future via a special USB stick add-on. The Archos 80 G9 is available direct from the manufacturer for £199. The iPad may have kick-started a tablet revolution, but it's clear that many people are holding off buying one because of the steep price tags attached to such devices. With a reasonably equipped laptop costing less than £400 these days, dropping the same amount of cash on a tablet doesn't make sense for many people. That's why the notion of a sub-£200 tablet is so enticing. Granted, we've seen cheaper examples -- such as the £130 Andy Pad -- but there's always something lacking in these low-end challengers. The Archos 80 G9 is the first budget Android tablet to ship with a dual-core processor and Honeycomb -– Google's dedicated tablet operating system. Early omens are good. The 80 G9 is fast and lightweight, and the small size makes it easy to hold.
It's time for the G9 series of Android tablets from ARCHOS, a Texas Intstruments OMAP4 dual-core 1GHz processor toting set of unique-looking pieces of hardware set to hit the streets of North America soon. What we've got here is the smaller of the two, the 80, the more enticingly sized tablet while the 101 version, at 10.1 inches, sits kindly in a stream of 10.1-inched tablets that appears never-ending. Both tablets have essentially the same set of specs, other than the screen size, so come with us here on a journey that'll reveal what you'll be getting out of either. This is one of the first devices you'll find on the market using the Texas Instruments OMAP4 dual-core processor (running here at 1GHz) and the first tablet you'll see running the processor (other than developer units, of course). This is Texas Instruments first dual-core processor on the market and one we first saw up and running all the way back at MWC 2011 in Barcelona. We first got out hands on these devices (prototype versions, at least), back in June of 2011 where we saw both versions again. Have a look first here at the video from that session: If you haven't just watched the videos above, you should know that the ARCHOS 80 G9 tablet has a kickstand.
