It is powered by a 600mhz Rockchip 2808 processor, does web browsing pretty well (for an ARM9 processor) and plays all video codecs at up to 720p video playback (at up to limited 2500kbit/s bitrates for 720p). Archos is going to try to sell this device in all retail stores of the world at only $179 in the USA and 149€ in Europe (because European countries have more taxes they don't just convert Euro prices to US Dollar prices), it may quickly become a best-seller and I think it is a great very low-cost alternative to the iPad. For advanced users that absolutely want the fastest OMAP3440 ARM Cortex A8 800mhz processor, there is the Archos 5 Internet Tablet available today below $249 at Radio Shack www.radioshack.com or you might want to wait another few months (I am speculating) for Archos to release the next generations of ARM Cortex A8 or ARM Cortex A9 based tablet devices (probably also for a bit more expensive than this Home Tablet series) at all different screen sizes (I speculate and the interviews around the web point to clues towards from 3" to 10" Android Tablets starting at $100...) First unboxing and review of the Archos 70 Internet Tablet, a $275 alternative to the $499 iPad and the $599 Samsung Galaxy Tab. I was amazed by how thin and light it was when I first took it out of the box, at 300 grams, it feels like it is empty of electronics. The capacitive touch screen on an Archos tablet is cool too, I need to get used to that. Hopefully I will learn to type on it as fast as I do with my finger-tips/nails on my resistive screens. My plan this winter is to carry this 7" Archos Android tablet with me everywhere in the inside of my jacket pocket. In this video, I try to show you multi-touch, web browsing speed, email, facebook, Google Maps Street View, Live wallpapers, video playback, HDMI output and more.

Fujian Sanxi has come out with an Android Tablet running 2.1 and a functioning version of marketplace. We think the word snappy is over used, but we think that it is the right word to describe how this tablet runs. Its running a Rockchip processor and has a finish that doesn't make it feel cheap. The device is will be available to distributors for around $105 so we think it'll be on the streets for about $150. For that price I'd give them my piggy bank!

Arnova 10, $199 10.1" Android Tablet

This may become the world's cheapest ARM Cortex-A8 1Ghz RK2918, 10.1" capacitive Android tablet on the market (I filmed an early pre-production prototype of it at CES www.youtube.com ). Until about April, Arnova 10 is being released now as a 10.1" resistive ARM9 600Mhz RK2818 tablet. The price remains $199 in the USA, 199€ in Europe (consider all European prices always include ~20% VAT). Look for a slightly different model number once the capacitive/rk29 version starts shipping. They will shift to it as soon as 10.1" capacitive and rk29 components are ready/stable and mass manufactured, the Chinese suppliers are working as fast as they can, this should be in a couple months. Arnova is Archos new brand based in Hong Kong, that uses design, manufacturing and distribution strengths but will remain a separate brand for the cheaper $100-$200 devices (see the press release here). The idea here is to get these excellent valued Rockchip based designs to more people in Europe and the USA. But Arnova is also more extensively going to be promoted for developing countries as people there enjoy cheaper stuff. But people enjoy cheaper stuff everywhere. Rockchip is doing excellent work optimizing cost in their entry level SoC designs, and are doing stable hardware optimizations with the latest versions of Android that can be adapted for the given ARM architectures that they use.
