Archos 101 G9 Review

Most people will think Apple if you raise the subject of tablets, and the French technology company Archos wouldn't even get a look-in. But in actual fact, Archos has been turning out tablets for far longer than the likes of Apple. In those days they were called portable media players (PMP) and were the gadget of choice for movie fans with a huge collection of digital video. At that time they were really expensive and not really well-known in the mainstream. But now Archos has come up with a tablet that at well under 300 quid, is certainly on the budget side, but how will it fare in a market where iPads and high-end Android tablets reign supreme? Pick up the 101 G9 and it's clear to see why it is so much cheaper than Apple's baby – it's unattractive and plasticky. Give it a bit of a squeeze and it literally groans at you – it's not the sort of sturdy body you'd find on Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 for instance. It's a dull, grey colour too, and a thick bezel sits around its 10.1in display. It's not going to win you any admiring glances, that's for sure. However, looks aren't everything and underneath that unprepossessing exterior lies a muscly 1Ghz dual-core chip, which you are more likely to find in tablets that cost around 400.

Archos 101 G9 review

The Archos 101 G9 is an Android 3.2 tablet with 8GB of internal storage and Wi-Fi connectivity. With the purchase of an optional 3G Stick, you can upgrade the tablet's wireless prowess. The 10-inch 101 G9 costs £269.99 direct from Archos. The Archos 101 G9 is essentially the Archos 80 G9 but with a larger screen. All of the internal hardware is identical, right down to the 1GHz dual-core CPU, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage space. Aside from the increased screen real estate, the biggest difference between these two siblings is the price: the 101 G9 costs around £100 more than its 8-inch relative. For a dual-core Android 3.2 tablet, £270 is competitive when you consider how much Samsung is asking for its Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, with the price of the Motorola Xoom tumbling and challengers such as the Asus Eee Pad Transformer selling for under £400, Archos' pricing seems less appealing. Still, if £270 is your absolute maximum then the 101 G9 presents excellent value for money. Granted, the all-plastic casing feels a little cheap, but the ability to plug in an optional 3G stick for even greater mobility almost makes up for it.

Archos 101 G9 review

What do you want from a tablet? It's a question that many reviews want you to ask yourself before invariably buying an iPad 2, but it's a question that's particularly relevant to the Archos 101 G9. That's because Archos has focused on media playback for its latest machine, and it's done a pretty decent job of it. The Archos 101 G9 also happens to be a fully fledged Android 3.2 Honeycomb tablet at the same time. Plus there's the little point of cash - at £270 for 8GB, this is one of the most affordable Android 3.2 tablets that money can buy. The obvious fear with any tablet focused on the budget market is that too many corners have been cut in order to bring it in at an iPad-destroying price point. But on paper, at least, there are no obvious miscarriages of silicon justice. You get a 1GHz OMAP 4 dual-core processor courtesy of Texas Instruments, with a view to upgrading this to a faster 1.5GHz model in early 2012. There are plenty of connection options - including a mini HDMI port, microSD slot and a standard micro USB port. And when it comes to the all-important display, you can rest assured that the 10.1-inch screen is capacitive (and responsive), and boasts a healthy native resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

Archos 101 G9 Review

The new $369 Archos 101 G9 tablet continues the company's tradition of building mobile devices with strong multimedia capabilities. This 10-inch tablet features an HDMI output, a built-in kickstand, and even a remote control app to command the slate like a TV from the sofa. The tablet market, however, is a crowded field with a slim margin for error. Apple's iPad 2 rules the roost, and premium challengers such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 are in hot pursuit, hoping to woo customers away from iOS with luxurious designs. Users also have more affordable options, including innovative devices such as the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer that merge laptop-style functionality with a Honeycomb tablet. Find out if this affordable Honeycomb slate has enough media skills to tempt you away from other devices. Clad in bland gray plastic, the Archos 101 G9 won't impress anyone with its design. Measuring 8.9 x 6.1 x 0.5 inches and weighing 1.4 pounds, the tablet thankfully isn't too heavy or bulky compared to other 10-inch slates. For instance, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 (10.1 inches) tips the scales at 1.25 pounds, the Sony Tablet S (9.4-inch) at 1.3 pounds, and Apple's iPad 2 (9.7 inches) weighs in at 1.34 pounds.

Touchscreen Tablet Reviews

Archos - still leader for Android tablets - is beginning to release its much-anticipated new generation with the 101 G9, a 10.1-inch running on Android Honeycomb 3.2. Archos had announced that the 9 generation would mark a technical turning point, with the use of components that were at least on a par with the competition while still maintaining its competitive pricing policy of bringing its tablets in at 30 to 40% cheaper than the competition (in the Android OS camp). However, although Archos had promised a last cry, dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, TI's production delays on mass production of the new chip and the fact that Archos was unwilling to push back its own release date, meant that the go-ahead was given for a model clocked at 1 GHz, with another model coming out at the end of the autumn which will have a 1.5 Ghz processor (and cost around £40 more). Except that now, the official G9 page is talking a 1.2 GHz model with availability of the 1.5 GHz version now slated for the beginning of 2012. It looks very much as if the release of Archos products remains problematic...

Archos 101 G9

Drowning in a sea of look-alike Android tablets? So are we. The Archos 101 G9 doesn't do much to change that perception, but at $369, it's the least expensive 10-inch Android Honeycomb tablet we've reviewed so far. It's a solid buy for penny-pinchers, although it doesn't bring much else that's new to the table. If you're looking for a basic Android tablet, though, the price may be enough. Design, Features, and Storage OptionsThe Archos 101 G9 is made of dark gray plastic, and it looks like any number of other widescreen Android tablets. The 101 G9's tapered edges and back panel make it look a little slimmer than it actually is, which helps. The hard plastic back panel feels a little cheap. Various ports and buttons stick out of the sides; that makes it easy to pop in a microSD card or adjust the volume, but difficult to handle the unit without accidentally pressing something. The charging cable also completely blocks the microSD card slot. There are two main versions of this tablet. I tested the 8GB flash-based version, which measures 6.6 by 10.9 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 23.8 ounces; this one is available now. Archos also announced a second, slightly bulkier version of the 101 G9 that contains a Seagate Momentus Thin 250GB mechanical hard disk with a 4GB flash cache, although it hasn't been released yet.

Archos 101 G9

Roll up, storage fans -- we've gone hands-on with the Archos 101 G9, a 10.1-inch, Android 3.1 Honeycomb tablet that will be available with a 250GB hard drive for £400, or 16GB of flash storage for around £280. Both will go on sale at the end of September. When we manhandled the 101, it didn't feel as sturdy or slick as the iPad 2. But this tablet is considerably cheaper. It's also worth bearing in mind that we didn't see the final model. While we'd be surprised if the end result is radically different from the preview units we played with, we'll hold fire on a judgement regarding build quality nevertheless. The tablet feels quite light and slim, weighing 649g and measuring 12.6mm thick. We were mucking about with the 16GB flash storage version, however. The version with the 250GB hard drive weighs 755g and measures 15.6mm thick.Around the back, there's a fold-out strut that'll hold the tablet up if you want to enjoy a spot of video. It didn't seem particularly stable, but it could come in handy on the train, for example. The display has a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels, and looked decent enough to us. Sometimes the panel looked slightly dark, but the default Honeycomb background hardly stands out anyway, what with its muddle of navy blues and blacks.Inside the G9, there's a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor clocked at 1.5GHz.
