Apple just reported all-time record iPhone, iPad, and Mac sales. Surely the availability of the iPhone 4S on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon had something to do with that. But of those three carriers, how does Verizon's phone stack up? Well, if you're looking for speed, AT&T's model ($199.99-$849.99, 4 stars) is the best of the three, thanks to its support for simultaneous voice and data, as well as faster 3G speeds via the carrier's HSPA+ 14.4 network. But Verizon's version is no schlub, and is definitely the carrier's best iPhone yet. So why are we rating it lower on Verizon than on Sprint? Because Verizon is making a much more aggressive push towards 4G LTE than Sprint is, and the iPhone 4S is not a 4G phone. Here we're going to focus on how the phone performs on Verizon's network. RF reception on the 4S is good, and on par with other top Verizon phones. Call quality on is very good too. Voices sound loud, full, and clear in the phone's earpiece. Calls made with the phone can sound a bit thin, but still sharp and natural, with excellent background noise cancellation.

The iPhone has been a massive success despite its obvious flaws (think no Flash support; mediocre camera; lack of customisation) and Apple manages to get away with releasing phones at a very slow rate compared with other manufacturers, so we've been waiting a long time for what we all thought would be the iPhone 5, but in reality turned out to be the iPhone 4S. So what is it we've all been waiting for? Well, the big news is the new operating system, iOS 5, a faster processor and some new apps – and yet, while this might make us scoff at another phone maker's efforts, once you unwrap your beautiful shiny new iPhone, there's something that sucks you in. Yes, it looks pretty much like the last handset release but it still manages to woo the user. Anyone who is already the proud owner of an iPhone 4 won't really need to read the forthcoming description of the iPhone 4S, because little has changed. It's the same size and weight (140g and 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm). In fact it's one of the less weighty smarties on the market, but the fact that it is constructed from glass and metal makes it feel far more solid and classy than the slimmer Samsung Galaxy S II with its plastic body.

A lot of people are wondering which iPhone is the right one for them - both people looking to upgrade their own one and people who are just joining the Apple phone party. How much more do you get with the 4S, over the iPhone 4? If you're wondering just that, we're here to help by putting the two head to head. Apple seems to have adopted a Tick-Tock strategy. The 3GS improved on the 3G, but wasn't a completely new design, that came with the iPhone 4. And now the iPhone 4S improves on the previous model, again without being a complete redesign. It's a strategy that works, the previous generation of iPhone well proved that. But are the changes enough to justify an upgrade? Some people were underwhelmed when they heard there's no "iPhone 5", while others cheered when they saw Siri and the beefier hardware. Here's the short list of changes that say "Yes, it's worth it!" and also a few things that could potentially discourage you from upgrading to the iPhone 4S:. This isn't an in-depth review of the iPhone 4S - there will be a separate article for that. Here, we focus on the differences between the 4S and the iPhone 4.

Here it is folks, the iPhone 4S from Apple. It's not the iPhone 5 like so many people were expecting, or at least hoping Apple would unveil. You won't find any obvious outwardly design changes, like a bigger screen or a redesigned chassis. Even the back is still covered with glass, ready to dole out instant punishment to the poor sap who carelessly loses his grip and lets his phone fall to the floor. The iPhone 4S doesn't drive a stake in the heart of Android or Windows Phone 7, and it won't change the world in the same fashion that the original iPhone did back in 2007. These are all the things that the iPhone 4S isn't. The obvious question to ask at this point is, what is the iPhone 4S? The iPhone 4S is first and foremost the last iPhone model to come out of Cupertino under the tutelage of the late, great Steve Jobs. It's as much his product as any previous iPhone device -- his sooner than expected swan song, if you will, even though it was Tim Cook who took center stage at Apple's recent "Let's Talk iPhone" event. This is the flagship phone Jobs felt confident could compete with all those newfangled Android phones boasting big screens and dual-core processors.

The iPhone 4S is almost identical to the iPhone 4 in terms of aesthetics, the only key difference is that the antennas have been moved and the mute switch is slightly lower then the iPhone 4 making some cases unusable on the iPhone 4S. If you take a good look at the camera on the back you will notice a slight difference, as the camera is a complete redesign on the 4S. The iPhone 4S now has a brand new camera; it’s 8 megapixels and can shoot video in up to 1080p. There is a custom lens that has an aperture of f/2.4. The colour accuracy on this device is just beautiful, it captures colour with real depth and the lens actually lets a little more light in making the colours of your images brighter and more accurate. The iPhone 4S ($200 for 16GB with a two-year contract from AT&T) might not be the most exciting iPhone to date, but don’t write it off: The improved camera, faster processor, and the addition of the Siri personal assistant make for one powerful smartphone. If you’re upgrading from a 3G or a 3GS, you’ll see a huge difference. But if you’re currently rocking an iPhone 4, might want to wait for the next upgrade. The phone's iOS still has a few things that irk me, and I wasn’t very pleased with the call quality (though no “antenna gate” issues this time), but otherwise the iPhone 4S impresses. The Same Premium Design The iPhone 4S is pretty much identical in design to the iPhone 4, which, in my opinion, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It took a bit of time for me to get used to the iPhone 4’s slightly rectangular shape when I reviewed it last year. I grew to appreciate its aesthetic, however, which is both distinctly Apple and different from the pack of other high-end smartphones. The overall design exudes elegance--from the rounded, individual volume up and down buttons to the ring/silent switch and the power/sleep button up top. Like last year's black iPhone review unit, the face and back are made of glass that is specially treated to withstand scratches and oily fingers, according to Apple.

The most iconic and beloved smartphone in the world just got better. While it may not have been the Android-slaughtering superphone that many fans expected, the iPhone 4S brings a faster processor and graphics chip, Siri voice control, a backside-illuminated 8-megapixel camera that now shoots 1080p video, and a new “world phone” design that can operate on both CDMA and GSM networks, with faster HSPA+ speed on the latter. The question is: Will it be enough to hold the Android hordes at bay, and is it worth an upgrade for existing Apple fans who have already poured their savings into an iPhone 4? As with the leap from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS, the iPhone 4S is an exact clone of the iPhone 4 from the outside. Considering how much time Apple spent tuning this design the first time around and even retooling factories to be able to even make it in white, it should really come as no surprise that the company intends to milk it for a second generation. At the risk of rehashing our iPhone 4 review, it’s two slabs of glass, bonded together with a thin metal band that runs around the edge, forming a sandwich just 9.3mm thick. Fragile as it seems, it remains one of the most solid-feeling and substantial phones on the market.

But is a little tinkering under the hood enough to keep Apple on top, or are you better off this time around with an Android mobile? The iPhone 4S is the pinnacle of smart phone excellence, but it's not as far ahead of the curve as the iPhone 4 was when it launched last year. So if you own an iPhone 3G, 3GS or an older mobile, the iPhone 4S is a tremendously tempting option. If you do upgrade, the step-up in processing power, camera tech and especially the pin-sharp retina display will have you gawking at your mobile like a child who's found his favourite flavour crayon. The iPhone 4S will be available in black and white versions. If you already own an iPhone 4 or high-end Android smart phone such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 or the HTC Sensation, however, the decision is much trickier. Voice recognition, a snappier processor and an improved camera are the shiniest lures, and we don't think they're shiny enough to warrant spending £500.

The review is specifically for the Sprint version of the phone. Though performance will vary by carrier, the design and features are the same for all models. I will post reviews of the AT&T and Verizon Wireless in the coming days. For the first time since the iPhone was born four years ago, a new model didn't arrive in June this year. The wait set the iPhone 5 rumor mill frothing to overflow, so when the iPhone 4S arrived as an incremental upgrade, fanboys commenced an Internet-wide rending of garments. Some critics grumbled that they didn't get more, and I sympathize...kind of. Yes, the lack of 4G is disappointing. And yes, a totally new design would have been fun. But this is hardly the first time that Apple has chosen to make a subtle upgrade. Remember the iPhone 3GS? The truth is that the 4S brings healthy improvements to an already excellent device. iPhone owners finally get a 64GB model and a better camera, the dual-core processor delivers more speed, and Siri, the iPhone 4S' personal assistant/robot friend/gofer, adds a new and sassy experience. iOS 5 also trots out changes big and small, and we're glad to see Sprint join the Apple family with a true world phone.

The initial reaction to the announcement of the iPhone 4S was muted. First there’s that name: It’s the old phone’s name with an S attached to it. As the iPhone 3GS taught us, adding an S to an iPhone’s name can represent numerous under-the-hood improvements, but it doesn’t send shivers down your spine like incrementing a number by one and unveiling a redesigned exterior with mind-blowing features that may or may not include anti-gravity. Apple’s never going to win a competition with the wildest imaginations of tech bloggers. But the company seems to be doing OK in the business of building phones. The iPhone 4, which remained more or less unchanged for 15 months as approximately a zillion Android smartphone models came and went, has consistently been the best-selling smartphone around. Now here comes the iPhone 4S, which is more of a good thing: It takes the successful look of the iPhone 4 and tosses in a dual-core processor for dramatically improved speed, an upgraded camera, and some brand-new voice-command technologies.

As expected, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S at its "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4. The news was underwhelming and disappointing to many who were also expecting an iPhone 5. There's also the fact that the iPhone 4S looks almost identical to the iPhone 4. However, there's more than meets the eye, as Apple made a number of changes under the hood to improve on performance, including a faster processor, a more advanced camera, and a new antenna design. In addition, Apple expanded its family to include Sprint and a 64GB model (finally!). Offering more choice will certainly help Apple's cause, but is there enough to persuade iPhone 4 owners to upgrade? The iPhone 4S features Apple's A5 dual-core 1GHz processor along with a dual-core GPU. Apple says the new chipset will make the iPhone 4S twice as fast and offer graphics performance that is seven times faster than the iPhone 4's.

The Apple iPhone 4S is here, and as soon as Tim Cook's keynote was over we spent some hands-on time with the new iOS 5 smartphone. Much of the magic is now hidden behind a familiar face, but things like Siri, the boosted camera and a core speed improvement will be enough reason for many to upgrade. The fact that Apple has left the external design unchanged may frustrate many would-be upgraders, though it's hard to be too disappointed when the handset - even over a year old - remains the thinnest smartphone around. It's still 9.3mm thick, impressive when you think Apple has made it a single World Phone with support for both GSM and CDMA networks. We won't be able to speed-test the HSPA support until we have more time with a review unit, but Apple is promising speeds that are the equivalent of what some networks - and rival devices - claim is 4G. Still, we compared load times of the New York Times homepage over Verizon's EVDO Rev.A connection and Apple's WiFi network, with only a couple of seconds difference.

The biggest change is the new processor. It's Apple's own A5 chip, a dual-core affair that the company reckons will make the iPhone 4S seven times faster than the iPhone 4.Apple showed off the 4S' computing prowess by running the cutting-edge Infinity Blade 2, and the phone certainly seemed potent. We would never have called the iPhone 4 underpowered, but a new processor should kit its successor out well for a fresh generation of intensive apps. We're interested to see what kind of new games the 4S will be capable of running. Despite chewing through polygons at a rate of knots, Apple's confident that the more powerful chip won't adversely affect the 4S' battery life. We can apparently expect 8 hours of talk time over 3G, 6 hours of 3G browsing, and 9 hours of Wi-Fi browsing.
