iPhone 3GS
I've never owned an Apple product in my life. I've been an old-school PC gamer since the days of DOS and only used Macs because that's all my school had in the computer lab. When MP3 players became ubiquitous, I turned my nose up at the iPod and went for competing products from companies like Creative and Sansa. I also didn't jump on the iPhone bandwagon, deciding instead to stick it out with my original carrier, Verizon. Sure, I knew that Apple made great products that mixed slick aesthetic design with a butter smooth user interface and OS. But I still resisted the siren call of Apple for one reason: I didn't want to get "locked in" to Apple. I didn't want to get locked into iTunes, I didn't want to get locked into AT&T and I didn't want to get locked into AAC. So I was happily living a non-Apple existence when I was offered the chance to review a 32GB iPhone 3GS. I decided to bite the bullet and give it a chance. For two weeks, I sent my existing cell phone (a Verizon Blackberry Storm) on vacation and gave my entire life over to the 3GS. That meant every phone call, text, email, IM, and Twitter and Facebook post I made was done on the iPhone.
Product Survey: Mobiles & Smartphones
"Better, faster, stronger ?" the new iPhone? The look hasn’t changed, but it’s different. The iPhone 3G S is a more robust piece of kit, with better performance and speed – which is where the S (for speed) comes from. It also has longer battery life. A few days of co-habitation with the 3G S and the 3G, lying unused on the table, had lost a few points in our estimation… but not all. Will we be saying goodbye to the 3G? Should everyone get the new version? From the outside, nothing distinguishes the 3G S from the 3G: elegance, sobriety and minimalism both. Memory capacity, displayed on the back, is now up to 16 GB or 32 GB and the screen is a little more resistant to fingerprint marks. Although the new software can be used on all three iPhones – the new OS has richer functionality (see inset) – only the 3G S includes the latest hardware developments. The 3G S is faster than the 3G, that’s for sure. We compared the new model with its two predecessors: the iPhone (Edge) and the 3G, both working with the new 3.0 iPhone OS.
Apple iPhone 3GS
With the iPhone 3GS, Apple solidifies its leadership position in a crowded smartphone landscape. It would be easy to dismiss the Apple iPhone 3GS as an inconsequential hardware upgrade. But to do so would underestimate how much, collectively, the phone's new features augment the iPhone experience. With the iPhone 3GS, Apple solidifies its leadership position in a crowded smartphone landscape. On the outside, the iPhone 3GS ($299 for 32GB, or $199 for 16GB, with a two-year AT&T contract, as of 6/22/09) looks and feels virtually identical to the existing iPhone 3G (now $99 for 8GB with a two-year AT&T contract). Yes, it's disappointing that Apple made no refinements in the external case (see our review of the iPhone 3G for more detail, but it's simply a minimalist design dominated by its display and the home button beneath that display). And yes, it's curious that the colors remain the same, black or white gloss (this from the company which made sure its audio players came in every color of the spectrum). But inside, the iPhone 3GS has been fully redesigned, with new core components (CPU, memory, integrated compass, video recorder) in different locations, no less.
Apple iPhone 3G S Digital Camera Review
Apple's iPhone 3G S is an upgrade from last year's iPhone 3G that beefs up the processing and memory, adds a few new features, and upgrades the photographic system. From the previous model's 2-megapixel sensor, the 3G S can now take 3-megapixel images, as well as autofocus, where the older model couldn't, it supplies limited EXIF data, and has the ability to record video. We took the iPhone 3G S, and lab tested it as we would a camera, for all its features. We were pleasantly surprised with a number of results, including color accuracy and distortion, though the lack of a burst mode, and complete absence of manual controls was a letdown. While no replacement for a proper camera, the iPhone is making gradual steps to becoming the all-in-one device it obviously hopes to be. The iPhone 3G S is available for $199 with 16GB of internal memory, $299 with 32GB on an AT&T two-year contract, or else $599/$699 without the contract. For this review, we decided to test the iPhone 3G S's mettle against both older iPhones, and a point-and-shoot camera. The camera we decided on was the Sony T900, because it has a similar look and feel to the iPhone, uses a touch-screen, and also has a small lens.
