Everything You Need To Know About Apple's iPad 3

By GameInformer, published 03-07-2012

Apple hosted a press conference today where it showed off the next installment of its popular iPad. Why do you want it? Here's why. The latest version of the device broke with tradition, going by "the new iPad" instead of the iPad 3. Fortunately, there's more to the new iPad than just an odd name. The biggest upgrade to the iPad line is the fact that it has a Retina display. In English, that's a resolution of 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. Compare that to the iPad 2, which boasts a more conventional 1,024 by 768 pixel display, and you can appreciate the improvement. Cosmetically, it's much the same as previous models, and Apple claims battery life will hit 10 hours, or nine hours on its newly supported 4G wireless. AT&T and Verizon will both sell their own versions o...

PlayStation Vita Review

By GameInformer, published 13-02-2012

Is Sony’s new handheld gaming platform worth the price of admission? We break down its performance and hand out a final grade in anticipation of the February 22 release.Display The screen is the first thing you will notice about the Vita, and understandably so. Though it doesn’t have the resolution of the iPhone 4’s Retina display, this five-inch, 960x544 resolution OLED screen still delivers bright, colorful, and stunning visuals. The graphical fidelity is markedly better than the PSP and PlayStation 2, but not quite on the same level as the PlayStation 3. The fact that the image quality is even in the neighborhood of the high-powered console is an incredible feat in and of itself. During my review I saw no hints of ghosting or tearing, frequent problems on the PSP. Vid...

Apple sells record-breaking 37 million iPhones in Q1, 2012

By GSMArena, published 25-01-2012

Despite being called as a "disappointment" by skeptics the iPhone 4S, coupled with the iPhone 4 and the 3GS helped Apple post the highest iPhone sales figure so far. Just in Q1, 2012 alone, Apple sold (not just shipped) 37 million iPhones, which is an astonishing figure whichever way you look at it. Compared to last year's figures, this year's figure is up by an amazing 128 percent. In the...

iPhone-Loving Robbers Leave Android Phones Unpilfered

By MaximumPC, published 15-12-2011

Want to avoid getting mugged? Buy an Android phone – or even better yet, a Blackberry. No, they don’t have any crazy criminal-prevention apps or burglar whistles built in; thieves just don’t want them. Or at least one pair of thieves in Manhattan don’t want them. Apparently, two robbers have been accosting Columbia University students for their iPhones. No other phone will do! The crooks even let one victim keep a perfectly good Droid, police say. The robbers still snatched the poor Droid owner’s cash, the local NBC station reports, but at least he could call the cops on his black sheep phone afterwards. A second victim was thrown against a fence and searched after she said she didn’t have an Apple handset, while a third separate victim had actually had an iPhone and was left u...

InterfaceWe've finally got our hands on the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, so we've taken an in-depth look at Google's latest OS: Android 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich to its friends.Google has told us that this is one of the biggest overhauls of the operating systems since it unleashed the Android project three years ago - and there's certainly a lot to plough through. From enhanced contact menus to improved keyboards and NFC capabilities, even the most ardent Android users will have to spend some time getting used to the new OS - so let's dive in.InterfaceThe most noticeable change with Ice Cream Sandwich is the interface - it might follow the same principles as the Android of old, but the way it's used is radically different in a number of ways.Firstly, Android 4.0 is designed to work without b...

Review: BlackBerry Curve 9380

By TechRadar, published 24-11-2011

Overview, design and feelAfter playing it cool for a few years, RIM has apparently decided that there's something to this touchscreen phone lark after all, releasing a budget all-touch device in the shape of the BlackBerry Curve 9380. In the last few months we've seen a touchscreen added to the Bold in the form of the BlackBerry Bold 9900, an update to the Torch line in the BlackBerry Torch 9810, and a new, all-touch addition to the Torch family in the BlackBerry Torch 9860. Now it's the Curve family's turn, even though we thought it was doing fine without touch in our BlackBerry Curve 9360 review. Instead of taking the Bold route and adding touch capability to the screen above the keyboard, RIM has been somewhat more aggressive with the BlackBerry Curve 9380. The keyboard's gone completel...

Tackling the Tablet Conundrum: Which One is Right For You?

By MaximumPC, published 21-11-2011

Do you even need a tablet? If so, which one? We review the current crop of tablet mainstays. We explain the hardware and OS features that matter the most. Follow along as we unravel what tablets are actually good for. When a consumer electronics category confuses the masses, it’s usually because the technology is hard to understand on a fundamental level. Have you ever tried to explain texture fill rates to your GPU-ignorant brother-in-law? Or RAID levels to your mom—who shouldn’t even be asking about RAID in the first place? Videocards and storage devices can confuse the lay consumer, but at least the prospective hardware buyer usually knows he or she needs a videocard or storage device in the first place. Your game won’t play at a high resolution? A new videocard is probably the...

Review: Motorola Razr

By TechRadar, published 21-11-2011

Overview, design and feelThe familiar Motorola Razr brand is back, but this time it's re-imagined with Android 2.3.5, an 8MP camera with Full HD recording and a super slim chassis that's just 7.1mm.That doesn't make it the thinnest phone in the world, as it's still got a thicker end to it at the top of the phone - but given you don't hold that section, it certainly feels slim. However, lumping most of the components at the top does make it feel a little oddly-balanced in the hand, although it's only 127g heavy (incidentally, the original Razr was 95g - but that didn't have GPS, Wi-Fi, 3G or a camera on board).brightcove : 1276176311001The screen is also oddly designed in our opinion, with a large amount of chassis surrounding the display. Review: Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Overview, Design and Feel. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the world's first phone to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and comes with a plethora of top end tech, including a huge but still massively high resolution screen. There are some gadgets in geek-world that are announced and we just cannot wait to touch. Nokia's N95, the original iPhone, the T-Mobile G1 and Palm's first Pre. And the Galaxy Nexus fits firmly in that category. The big selling point here is not so much the handset – it's what powers the Galaxy Nexus. We grabbed some time with it on the show floor just after Samsung's press conference took place. The Galaxy Note has a 1.4GHz ARM-based dual-core processor inside, though we have to be honest and say that while some apps were snappy, there was a bit of lag when dropping into things like the web browser. Overview, design and feelThe HTC Radar is the latest smartphone to run Windows Phone 7.5, following on from the HTC Titan. With a smooth unibody design, HD video recording and 5MP camera, will it be enough to make Windows Phone a success? If HTC was at school right now, you can't help feeling it'd be getting an A for effort. The Taiwanese manufacturer is certainly churning out handsets like nobody's business. For the last few years, it's been concentrating mainly on Android - but now Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is here, it's going for gold. Probably much to the annoyance of Nokia, which adopted WP as its main operating system months ago, but is still being pipped to the post by HTC when it comes to getting handsets on the shelves.Little brother of the HTC Titan and the second handset from HTC t...

Alcatel's One Touch 990 (or OT-990) falls firmly into the latter category, as you'd expect given the company's reputation as a purveyor of budget phones. So the question we're asking here isn't what exciting tech helps this rival Samsung's Galaxy S2, HTC's Sensation, Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc, or any of the other powerhouses in our 20 best mobile phones list.Rather we're concerned with whether it's money well spent. Especially when the world contains the likes of Orange's budget titan, the San Francisco. If you read our review of it, you'll know we lost our heart to that phone because of its amazing competence given its paltry cost. Other rivals worth bearing in mind are the INQ Cloud Touch, which excels at so...

Review: Nokia 700

By TechRadar, published 25-10-2011

Overview, design and feel? The Nokia 700, touted as the world's smallest smartphone, is dropping as part of a trio of Nokia handsets (the 600, 700 and 701) running the new Symbian Belle interface. And it is indeed small. It's slim. It's quite sleek too, and many other 'S' adjectives as well. The thin frame holds a 3.2-inch AMOLED ClearBlack touchscreen, 5MP and VGA cameras, an external speaker hugging the bottom curve, and all this in only a 92g, 9.7mm-thick phone. It's pretty swish. The smooth battery cover has a brushed steel finish that feels smooth to the touch, encasing the 5MP camera with LED flash and - happily - a tiny clip, meaning no scrabbling around to get the cover off. There's an almost miniscule camera soft key on the right side, plus a lock button and slightly longer volume ro...

Hands on: Samsung Epic 4G Touch review

By TechRadar, published 25-10-2011

Hands on: Samsung Epic 4G Touch reviewHow do you make one of the best phones ever released even better? With the US-only Samsung Epic 4G Touch, which was released recently in the US by Sprint, the super-thin (9.59mm) and super-light (128.9 grams) device is remarkably similar to the Samsung Galaxy SII, our Android-leading current 5-star phone.Even the demigods at Apple might need to worry a little about the Epic 4G Touch. Sure, the iPhone 4S has a bright and crisp screen, with a fast A5 processor. Yet, the Epic 4G Touch goes a few steps beyond those specs. Outfitted with a 1.2GHz Exynos processor, the Epic is one of the fastest phones we've ever tested. Apps pop up suddenly. Flipping between widgets, there's none of the annoying pause of some earlier Android models. Games like NOVA 2, a sci...

Siri, can you make me dump Android?

By SlashGear, published 17-10-2011

Until now I’ve been inured to the iPhone’s charms. iOS has its strengths, but – barring three months of iPhone 3G ownership – Android has always been my daily driver. Pining for the metaphorical fjords

By TechReport, published 10-12-2011

Today is Wednesday, October 12, 2011. The day iOS 5 is released upon the Apple faithful—a group still smarting from the passing of Steve Jobs just seven days prior. Will I upgrade my stalwart 3GS to the Siri-fied new operating system? Well, not if my main goal is to get Siri, since it laughs at my device and its ancient, 2009 internals. ("Siri, where can I find a good burger near this location?" "I sense you have no A5, so shut up and go fix me a turkey pot pie!") The issue is whether I want to forgo, for now, my jailbroken goodies in exchange for iOS 5 shininess. Granted, a workable jailbreak method will probably be available before I'm even done writing this column, but I want to know Infinifolders is just a restore away before I go down the road less traveled yet again. Which I suppos...

Review: HTC Titan

By TechRadar, published 10-12-2011

Overview, design and feelHTC is doing fairly well right now. From the days of making (not so great) Windows Mobile handsets for networks, it's found its identity and is now riding high with a hugely recognisable brand around the world. Android was its saviour (and still is) but Windows hasn't been forgotten. HTC was the first to roll out Windows Phone 7 devices when they launched in the UK last year. And, true to form, it's in the lead with Windows Phone 7.5 devices too. The HTC Titan is one of its two first Mango-powered handsets - the other being the Radar. So, what's in a name? Well, quite a lot actually. The Titans were giant beasts from ancient Greek mythology. So by giving the phone a name like this, HTC's certainly aiming high. And you see that as soon as you take the HTC Titan out ...

iCloud.com goes live ahead of iOS 5 launch

By TechRadar, published 10-12-2011

Apple has finally opened up its iCloud.com website ahead of the imminent iOS 5 launch for a variety of Apple's iPhones, iPads and iPods. The new site simply features the option to login with your Apple ID and password, with the message 'To set up iCloud, go to iOS 5 Settings or OS X Lion System Preferences" meaning those without access to the iOS 5 system won't be able to do much as yet (so feel free to wave your fist at those lucky Germans). The new service will allow you to save your videos, photos and calendars in the cloud (well, a massive server farm Apple built in the US) and access them on another device, and will be a big feature of iOS 5.We're still eagerly awaiting the launch of the new iOS 5 download from Apple for the iPhone 4 and 3GS, the third and fourth gen iPod touch and ...

iPhone 4 set for sales boost as prices drop

By TechRadar, published 10-07-2011

The iPhone 4S pre-order madness has started, but the price drop for the iPhone 4, along with the incremental nature of its successors, upgrade could boost its popularity. As we explain in the hands on: iPhone 4S review, the changes under the hood for the new handset include a better processor, Siri assistant and a better lens. However, many of the coolest new features are brought by the iOS 5 update, which will be coming to the iPhone 4 on 12 October. Attractive propositionThat makes the iPhone 4 (and, to an extent, the similarly iOS 5 equipped-iPhone 3GS) attractive propositions for the more thrifty customers. The iPhone 4 8GB version is available on major networks for no additional cost on two year contracts starting from £36 a month (Orange) and £35.74 (T-Mobile). Buying the phone wit...

Kindle Fire 2: 8 things we want Amazon to doFor the last few months, the only device that could match the iPhone 5 for sheer volume of rumours was surely the fabled Amazon tablet. When it finally arrived in the form of the Kindle Fire - alongside two new Kindle ereader models - it turned out to be a lot like what we expected, which is no bad thing. The Kindle Fire has impressed a lot of people - including us - with its revamped Android interface and impossibly low price, but like any first release, there are more features we want to see. Here's what we're hoping for in the Kindle 2.1. 3GWell, it's the obvious one for Kindle 2, isn't it? Week in Tech: Apple says hello, waves goodbye

By TechRadar, published 10-07-2011

This week was always going to be about Apple, but sadly not in the way we expected: a typically exciting Apple product announcement was overshadowed by the death of Steve Jobs. The week started on a much brighter note, though, with the usual excitable predictions about the forthcoming iPhone 5. It would be bigger, faster, completely different, filled with tiny elves and able to make biscuits fly, the rumour sites said, but our resident grump Gary Marshall wasn't convinced. "We'll get the iPhone 4S," he wrote, "an evolutionary step rather than a revolutionary one."Marshall's prediction? "It will have an A5 chip, more storage, more RAM, [a] better camera and the same basic form factor as the iPhone 4," he wrote. "There will be a black one. There will be a white one...

PSVita 3G Downloads Will be Capped At 20 Megabytes

By GameInformer, published 30-09-2011

If you were considering buying the more expensive 3G-enabled model of the Vita with the intention of buying retail games on the go, you might want to rethink those plans. In an article posted on the Japanese site ASCII (translated by Andriasang), a Sony representative stated that 20 megabyte cap will be put on downloads conducted through a 3G network. This is common in the mobile market  Apple imposes a 20MB file size limit on 3G downloads for iPhone and iPad. Apple's iOS devices and Android both support larger file sizes, but those bigger downloads require a Wi-Fi connection. So, downloaded on the go will likely be limited to things like music and small-scale casual games that are typical of the mobile game market.3G connections, which often suffer from significant packet loss an...

Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray

By TechRadar, published 22-09-2011

Overview, design and feelIt's been a busy old year for Sony Ericsson. As it struggles to regain a foothold in the market it was once sucha major player in, it's been firing out more Android-based Xperia smartphones than long-lost relatives on an episode of Jeremy Kyle. And they're not half bad either. The Xperia Arc has been the flagship of 2011's bunch. Arriving in the spring, it became the skinny poster girl for the Swedish-Japanese hybrid, showing off its amazing screen presence with the help of the Sony Reality Display (the bit that reproduces colour on the screen and makes it look great) but in the Xperia Ray, Sony Ericsson has gone for a smaller model. Before we go any further, there is one point we have to make clear: this phone is small. Review: BlackBerry Torch 9810

By TechRadar, published 09-09-2011

Overview, design and feelThis time last year, BlackBerry fans were salivating at the imminent release of the Torch 9800. For the first time, those who'd been demanding a touchscreen smartphone from RIM (without SurePress, which we'll just gloss over) were getting their way with the safety net of a keyboard below that slid out. On top of that was 3G, a 5MP camera and the brand spanking new OS. What wasn't to love? And 12 months on we feel like we're experiencing a bit of deja-vu, because the Torch 9810 is now hitting shelves. And to look at it, not much has changed. The only thing that you'll notice as being really different on the exterior is the material it's made from. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 has been given less a makeover and more a new jacket. Gone is the black and dark chrome fascia,...

VidRhythm now available on iTunes

Harmonix launches audio-video mash-up app for Apple's handhelds at $2 price point. Harmonix roused the rhythm-game faithful in July, after a trademark application for "VidRhythm" surfaced in the US Patent and Trademark Office's online database. However, that excitement gave way to confusion, when the Boston-based studio said last month that the project would see release on iOS platforms, and it would be a bit of a misnomer to call VidRhythm a game. Don't call VidRhythm a "game." Those who'd like to see what VidRhythm actually is can now do so, as Harmonix announced today that the software application is available through Apple's iTunes store for $1.99. By TechRadar, published 09-06-2011

Overview and designIt's taken a ridiculously long time to come, but this is it. This is the one. After the clickable screen of the BlackBerry Storm 2 and the touchscreen-with-slide-out-keyboard shenanigans of the original BlackBerry Torch, RIM has finally released a proper touchscreen smartphone. No ands or buts – the BlackBerry Torch 9860 is a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen, and that's it. Granted, the iPhone managed a similar-ish feat in 2007, but RIM's insistence in holding on to the designs that made it big in the first place have held it back from this moment. This 3.7-inch touchscreen the largest RIM has ever made, it's also the highest resolution, with a handy 480 x 800 pixels on display. Which is good, because you want the new BlackBerry OS 7 to look its best, don't you?Powering t...

Review: Three MiFi Huawei Wireless Modem E586

By TechRadar, published 09-05-2011

Three MiFi E586: OverviewThe way the tablet market has shaken out, it looks like those who want 3G built into their iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will have to pay a hefty price for the privilege (on the iPad, for example, having the option costs an extra hundred pounds). And that's before you get to actually paying the networks. The MiFi was introduced as a cunning way to reduce this cost, and not just for tablets, but laptops, media players anything else Wi-Fi.What devices such as the Three MiFi Huawei Wireless Modem E586 do is connect to mobile broadband, and act as a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to five devices, making it ideal for Wi-Fi-only iPad owners, or even iPod touch users. As you might expect, you've got your choice of monthly or pay-as-you-go plans, with the MiFi E586 costing around £...

UPDATE: We've now re-reviewed this phone for the UK market, so check out our findings below. It seems like there are a bazillion Android phones on the market, which means any phone with a brand new feature seems like a colossal improvement. The latest of these big steps forward was the 'glasses-free' 3D screen on the LG Optimus 3D. Now splashing down is HTC's Evo 3D, with 3D features intended to be less alarming those on the Optimus 3D.We've got a cheeky little video of the HTC Evo 3D if you want to see the phone in action ahead of our full and in-depth review:In fact, at first glance, you might mistake the Evo 3D for any other slightly chunkier Android phone with a bright screen and HTC's Sense user interface. You'll need to be running iOS 4.1 or above to ensure you have multitasking capabilities to make use of the Skype Wi-Fi app. Skype credThe other handy thing to note is that you'll be able to go online anywhere in the world for a relatively low price – in the US Wi-Fi starts at 6 cents a minute, while across Europe you're looking at €0.05 per sixty seconds. Review: BlackBerry Bold 9900

By TechRadar, published 08-10-2011

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 comes as something of a shock. You see, for years, BlackBerry has, in a sense, been catching up. That's not a dig at its parent company – it's practically royalty in push email and corporate handset circles. But it has been rare for RIM to lead the way. Cameras, internet browsing, HTML emails – all were included on RIM's phones years after they'd become standard fare on other handsets. For recent examples of decent phones that didn't really push the envelope all that far, just take a look at the Bold 9780 and 9700.But the Bold 9000 finally offers some cutting-edge tech, and in an attractive package to boot. Its 1.2GHz processor, high-spec touchscreen, brand new OS7 and HD video camera are all specs we never really expected a BlackBerry to have before the next m...

In Depth: Hands on: BlackBerry Torch 9810 review

By TechRadar, published 08-04-2011

The BlackBerry Torch sold surprisingly well given the lukewarm critical feedback it received, and showed the public still hankers after a decent touchscreen/physical keyboard combo. So when we heard of a sequel, we were excited to see if this would deliver a decent experience to go with the popular form factor - and we've been presented with the BlackBerry Torch 9810.The first thing you'll notice is, well, there's not much difference between it and the first iteration. We're talking the same 14.6mm depth 161g weight and the same 3.2-inch screen. The screen is actually one of two main changes - the resolution has been upped to an acceptable 480x640 pixel count (although we're waiting on official confirmation that it's not actually WVGA 800x480) which is a big improvement over the old HVGA off...

iPhone 5 to return to 3GS design?

HTC 'open to discussions' with Apple over patent dispute

By TechRadar, published 26-07-2011

HTC has expressed a desire to sit down with Apple and discuss the ongoing patent dispute between the two companies. HTC shares took a tumble after a US court ruled that it has infringed two Apple patents earlier this month, which is quite possibly what has prompted this sudden urge to meet with Apple. It's good to talkWinston Yung, HTC's chief financial officer, told Bloomberg, "We have to sit down and figure it out. "We're open to having discussions. We are open to all sorts of solutions, as long as the solution and the terms are fair and reasonable. "On and off we've had discussions with Apple, even before the initial determination came out." No doubt HTC is keen to avoid paying out too many patent royalties to Apple – it already pays Microsoft a per handset fee due to its use of paten...

Buying Guide: Mac or iPad: which is right for you?

By TechRadar, published 07-11-2011

"The market is just getting started – we'll see how it goes," he said in his characteristically enigmatic style. Then, after a long period of inactivity, Apple launched the iPad, and now nobody is talking about netbooks anymore. Tablets are the device du jour that everybody wants to own. This month AppleInsider.com reported on speculation that Apple will sell between 40 million and 45 million iPads in 2011. This staggering figure was revealed to analyst Brian White in meetings with component suppliers during a tech trip with Ticonderoga Securities to China and Taiwan. That's a lot of sales for a de...

Rumour: Apple planning 3G iPod touch

By TechRadar, published 07-08-2011

Apple might be about to close the gap between the iPhone and the iPod touch by kitting-out a new version of the latter with 3G data connectivity, according to reports.Dutch website AppleSpot.nl is claiming, that like the iPad, the world-beating handheld music and games titan will get a data-only service whenever a new version is launched, likely to be later this year. So, rather than have a cellular connection to make phone calls, you could use services like Skype to make VoIP voice and video calls, connect to social networks and play games online.Just like the iPadA rough translation of the report says: "It will work just like the iPad; you get a 3G enabled simcard from your provider and put that in you iPod Touch."Apple's choice of bringing 3G to the iPod Touch isn't all that weird, if it...

Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo

By TechRadar, published 29-06-2011

Sitting pretty in the hand, the small Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo smartphone and its 8.1-megapixel camera offer photographic skills far beyond what you'd expect for its 125g weight. The 3.7-inch screen with multi-touch Reality display is nice and sharp, and benefits colour-wise from Mobile Bravia technology. However it fares poorly in direct sunlight, with us having to pull the ol' hand-as-a-sun-blocker move. The phone is small enough to use comfortably with one hand, so it's not a huge problem, but essentially, with smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S2 carrying AMOLED and the Apple iPhone 4 with its Retina display technology, should we really be having problems with direct sunlight any more? But, moving on, the (blue for us) semi-anodised finish, curved posterior and well-distributed wei...

Review: HTC ChaCha

By TechRadar, published 06-10-2011

Let's get one thing straight: the HTC ChaCha is not the Facebook phone. It's not manufactured by Facebook. But let's get another thing straight, too: the HTC ChaCha is the Facebook experience. And it's even endorsed to a certain extent by the King of the network, Mark Zuckerberg, who gave a sermon about it at the phone's launch.HTC has taken its already winning Sense interface and remoulded it with a big blue 'F' at the centre - something the notoriously quiet Facebook founder went on record as saying he's "very happy" with and, in a nod to the future, how they "look forward to a lot more to come".Rocking the latest Android iteration, Gingerbread 2.3.3 and fully capable of a dance-off with some other 3G-capable Android devices, it's due to hit stores any day now, with a sim-free price tag ...

Week in Tech: Apple blurs the lines between iOS and OS X

By TechRadar, published 06-10-2011

Apple's World Wide Developers' Conference (WWDC) is easy to parody: Steve Jobs says "boom", the assembled hordes shout "woo!" and a million hands reach for their credit cards to buy whatever shiny new thing Steve has just showed off. This year, though, things were a little different. Apple may not have shown off shiny new hardware, but it did demonstrate some very big ideas.First up was OS X Lion, the latest and greatest version of Apple's desktop operating system. As we predicted last year, the lines between OS X and iOS - which runs on Apple's iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches - are blurring. Lion has lots of iOS-inspired features including multi-touch gestures, full-screen apps and autosaving among the 250 enhancements making their way into Apple's OS.One thing we didn't predict was OS X ...

Review: Microsoft Photosynth (iPhone)

By TechRadar, published 06-10-2011

When a stunning vista takes your breath away, your natural reaction, after drinking it in for a few moments, is to want to take the memory away with you to look back on. But a regular photo often fails to capture the scene in all its glory - nothing like actually being there. Microsoft's free Photosynth iPhone app goes some way to rectifying this by helping you capture a full panorama of the view. Now, while there are plenty of apps out there that do a competent job at stitching photos together, Photosynth is in another league entirely. Not only does it help you capture shots that are suitable for stitching, but it combines them pretty much flawlessly - even our discerning colleagues over on sister publication Digital Camera Magazine were impressed. When you've snapped and it has stitched,...

Review: Vodafone Smart

By TechRadar, published 06-07-2011

Vodafone's Smart is one of the most affordable Android devices on the market. Certainly, at £70 on pay as you go, it is attractively priced. But does it live up to what Android can offer? A low price and good value for money aren't the same thing. For all those of you who were expecting us to make the comparison at some point let's get it out of the way. The obvious comparison is with the Orange San Francisco. We simply loved that £99 Android smartphone. Other low-cost Android options include something like the Motorola Flipout though if you can stretch the budget you could go for something like the HTC Wildfire, currently around £129 SIM-free.So, the Vodafone Smart enters crowded territory. Vodafone has tried to differentiate things by letting you create custom backplates for £10 each...

HTC ChaCha gets secret processor spec upgrade

By TechRadar, published 06-07-2011

The HTC ChaCha must have performed badly in pre-release testing as it's been given a processor boost at launch. The news was outed by online retailer Clove, which spotted that the device's listed specs feature an 800MHz processor, rather than the 600MHz offering we saw at Mobile World Congress this year. We're not sure exactly what model CPU we're seeing here, but we assume it's a Qualcomm offering powering the Android 2.3 platform underneath the new Facebook phone.Look at them Facebookers, thinking they're all that...The ChaCha, like its HTC Salsa stablemate, has a dedicated Facebook key, allowing users to share whatever tunes, webpages or pictures they like to the social network at the push of a button.Apparently it has tickled Three's fancy, with the network launching the HTC ChaCha from ...

Samsung embracing hacker community for Galaxy S2

By TechRadar, published 06-07-2011

Samsung appears to have decided that the way it's going to encourage the most innovation on its smartphones is to get the hacking community involved.Unlike the likes of Apple and Microsoft, which favour a walled-garden approach to phone development, Samsung has sent a free Galaxy S2 to the CyanogenMod team. For those who don't know, CyanogenMod is a different version of the Android OS developed for specific phones such as the Google Nexus S and HTC Desire, and is pretty popular among phone modifiers.Upping the stakesSamsung has realised this and seems keen to help, rather than hinder, the hacking community develop its products. We hope this speeds up the attempts to bring CyanogenMod to the Samsung Galaxy S, which has been in development for aeons, it seems. It's an odd move for Samsung on p...

WWDC 2011: iPhone 5 release date set for autumn 2011?

By TechRadar, published 06-06-2011

Steve Jobs just wrapped up his WWDC 2011 keynote speech, with nary a mention of any hardware. The fact that Apple didn't announce an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S today makes a September release date seem ever-more likely. iOS 5, which was revealed today, was also given the vague release date of 'this fall' (autumn) – we've put two and two together and come out with September; so will iOS 5 launch with the iPhone 5?SighIt's not that we were exactly expecting a new iPhone given the multitude of leaks and rumours suggesting that we wouldn't see such a thing this WWDC, but we're still a little bit disappointed. Still, the iOS 5 features will make the iPhone 4 (and iPhone 3GS, would you believe) feel like a new phone, however, bringing iMessage, new notifications, integrated Twitter support and an i...

This is also accessible from the lock screen, with a simple swipe gesture taking you straight to the relevant app. These notifications will pop up at the top of the display in full-screen mode, but are not persistent, meaning they'll dismiss themselves after a few seconds if you're too into your current Words with Friends war.Bouncing onto the News StandMagazines are going to get their own section of the new iOS 5 launch, bringing with it a dedicated home screen pop-up from the app icon. This means that ...

Review: LG Optimus Black

By TechRadar, published 27-05-2011

Sitting alongside the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Black is a top-end smartphone, slipping in at just over £400, attempting to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Apple iPhone 4 for the smartphone crown, but with considerably fewer features and less processing power than its LG stablemate.First things first – the LG Optimus Black is light. Weighing a featherweight 109g, it even reaches a skinny 6mm side edge curvature, and 9.2mm thickness at its deepest point, besting the Apple iPhone 4 by a millimetre. Some may feel the lightness cheapens the feel of this handset somewhat, but our jeans pockets were thankful and it was nice to tote around something that didn't weigh us down. The slightly metallic back cover is smooth, and the phone's few soft keys are well-blended into the chassis, ...

Review: Acer Iconia Tab A500

By TechRadar, published 26-05-2011

In the contest to replace your laptop – and maybe even your TV – Android 3.0 tablets such as the Motorola Xoom are ganging up on the Apple iPad 2 by sheer quantity. We absolutely thrilled over the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, for example. Now it's time for the Acer Iconia Tab A500's day in the sun.In many ways, this is all about the operating system, so we'll admit that the differences between the three main Android 3.0 tabs are marginal at best. You have to choose your OS poison wisely – the iPad 2 is better for music, movies and games, and it has better quality apps and more of them. Meanwhile, the BlackBerry PlayBook is more secure than the competition, has real multi-tasking and even a more fluid interface for controlling your apps (er, all four of them). Tutorial: How to watch live TV on your iPad and iPhone

The company finally announced today that the port will be available in June or July of this year. The iPad version could trail the iPhone game's release due to the additional art being done to fit the iPad's 1024x768 display, but Square Enix doesn't expect a big gap between the two.No word on price yet, but I'll be shocked if it's more than I'm willing to pay. War of the Lions is a fantastic re-skinning of a seminal game, and I'll play it again at almost any price. When it makes its way to Android, anyway. I'm still hating on Apple for nearly bricking my iPhone 3G with OS updates.

Review: Samsung Galaxy Mini

By TechRadar, published 18-05-2011

Samsung is the only manufacturer that can get away with launching variants of one particular device in a series and pricing them to suit different budgets, as it did five years ago with the D500 and its variants the G600 and D900. Now the Koreans are doing it again with the Galaxy Series. The latest addition to the Samsung Galaxy range - topped by the five star Samsung Galaxy S2 (currently number one in our 20 best mobile phones ranking) - is the Galaxy Mini. Almost identical to the Galaxy Fit, it's slightly lighter and has a lower camera quality. It's clear that Samsung designed the Galaxy Mini to look and feel low-end and when it's up on the shelves on the high street, it will fit in well next to the likes of LG's Optimus One and Nokia's C3-05.This touchscreen phone is definitely affordab...

Apple iPhone Location Tracking Now Targeted By FCC, FTC

Fresh from being grilled at last week’s Senate Judiciary panel, Apple and Google may next have to participate in a public forum to answer more questions on their phones’ location tracking. This time, it’s the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that want some answers. They are “inviting” Apple and Google [...]

Android@Home: what you need to know

By TechRadar, published 05-12-2011

Anyone can get the source code for the basic Android platform and build a phone with it; now Google is letting anyone build peripherals and accessories for Android with its Android Open Accessory Kit program. There are "no NDAs, no fees and no approvals process," engineering director (and former Sidekick founder) Joe Britt points out, while Apple's Made For iPhone program has all three. But this isn't about Bluetooth keyboards or music streaming; Britt did show a concept music peripheral at Google I/O that would stream music from a CD that you select by recognising it with your phone (if Google could get the labels to agree to streaming you the contents of the CD you just brought home). No, the idea here is that everything in your home, from the lightbulbs to personal robots to the tumble ...

Updated: HTC Sensation vs iPhone 4 vs Samsung Galaxy S II

By TechRadar, published 05-12-2011

Would we care about Android if it weren't for HTC? Perhaps not. The HTC Desire was an early poster boy for Android, a genuinely great design that squared up to Apple's all-conquering iPhone and suggested it step outside. The HTC Desire remains at the top of our Best Mobile Phones in the World Today list despite younger, prettier competition, and it still represents exceptional value for money. So what happens when HTC takes the Desire and makes it even better? There are two answers to that. The first is the HTC Desire HD, which suffers from a few niggling issues, and the second is the brand spanking new HTC Sensation. Our colleagues at T3.com grabbed some HTC Sensation video footage which you can watch below.HTC says it sets "a new multimedia high for smartphones", and it's certainly an imp...

iPad 2 and iPhone 4 shortage tipped as Foxconn falls behind

By SlashGear, published 05-12-2011

Manufacturers want their gear to be popular, and they want consumers to line up to buy. The problem with being too popular is that it can be hard to keep enough stock on hand to supply the stores that are selling the hardware in droves. This is the issue Apple is having with many of its new products. The iPhone 4 was nearly impossible to get when it first launched with some people waiting weeks or months to be able to purchase the smartphones. Apple is having the same issue with the supply of its tablet, the iPad 2, in some areas. The popularity of the tablet and shortage of needed components means that Apple and its suppliers are having a hard time keeping up with demand. DigiTimes reports that Foxconn is having a shortage not only of some materials needed for Apple’s iPhone 4 and...

Android OS has more of Japanese smartphone market than the iPhone

By SlashGear, published 05-11-2011

I continue to be impressed that the iPhone commands so much of the smartphone market around the world with limited carriers in many countries and with only two models to choose from, assuming your carrier still has the iPhone 3GS. At the same time, there are more Android phones on the market than I can list from memory. It’s no surprise with the huge number of Android devices that the Android OS is taking over many markets around the world. The latest market to be taken over by Android smartphone is Japan. Japanese research firm MM Research Institute Ltd reports that smartphone running Android is now 57% of the Japanese smartphone market. Those numbers are for the fiscal year ending March 31. The previous year the Android OS held 11% of the market with 250,000 units shipped in Japa...

Brit Week: ARM: low power is in our DNA

By TechRadar, published 05-06-2011

As we're looking at British tech all this week on TechRadar, it makes sense to end the week with one of the biggest successes of recent years – ARM Holdings. It's responsible for licensing (not manufacturing) the processor tech behind almost all tablets and mobile phones including everything from the humblest 1998 Nokia to the Motorola Xoom and iPad 2 – as well as having involvement in oodles of other markets such as automotive. ARM's partners shipped a scarcely believable six billion processors. Now a PLC, ARM was formed in 1990 as Advanced RISC Machines, ARM was a joint partnership between Acorn Computer (of the Archimedes and BBC Micro fame), VLSI and some other company called Apple.ARM-POWERED: The iPad 2 runs the Apple A5 chip. Apple’s iPad Owned By 82 Percent Of U.S. Tablet Users, Yet The Daily Loses $10 Million

By SlashGear, published 05-05-2011

A recent study conducted by the Nielsen company has revealed several interesting numbers on current tablet usage in the U.S. and in particular about the usage of the Apple iPad. The survey polled only tablet owners in the U.S. and discovered that 82 percent of them owned an Apple iPad. This number is a huge lead ahead of competing tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola XOOM. The Samsung Galaxy Tab is a very distant second place, holding only a 4 percent share of the market. Following that is the Dell Streak with 3 percent and the Motorola XOOM with 2 percent. Beyond ranking, the survey delves deeper to see the break down of cellular versus WiFi tablet ownership as well as how tablet owners generally used their tablets. Of the Apple iPad owners, the report revealed that ...

iOS 4.3.3 rolled out, location data logging changed

By TechRadar, published 05-05-2011

Apple has rolled out the iOS 4.3.3, with the latest update looking to address some of the controversy around the way in which your location information is used. The update not only limits the time period of the cache of location information to a week but also now stops the cache being backed up to your computer. Last but not least, the cache is now deleted when location services are turned off in settings on the device. ResponseThe three changes are in response to the huge controversy that sprang up when it came to light that Apple's key devices were logging location to a file which was backed up to the user's computer. Although the company defended the practise, the furore around information being gathered was enough to prompt changes and the update has been rolled out quickly. Indeed, it...

Best phone screen: display tech explained

iOS 5 to add iPhone OTA updates tip Verizon sources

By SlashGear, published 05-05-2011

Apple is planning to release iOS 5.x refreshes for the iPhone 4 via OTA (over-the-air) updates, it’s been suggested, at least for those with the Verizon CDMA version of the smartphone. According to 9 to 5 Mac‘s sources, while iOS 5 itself will be distributed in the usual way, through an iTunes update that requires the iPhone be plugged in via USB, the OS refresh will also bring with it OTA support for future point-updates. The news seemingly comes from Verizon Wireless sources, though it seems likely that the other carriers Apple works with – such as AT&T in the US – will also be supporting the functionality. Computer-free updates are something Apple users have coveted from rival platforms for some time, however, so we can imagine Apple pushing hard to get thi...

Apple iOS 4.3.3 with “Bug Fix” for Location Tracking Now Available

By SlashGear, published 05-04-2011

We have been closely following the iPhone 4 location tracking saga, and reported on Monday that Apple was getting ready to release iOS 4.3.3 to make it possible to clear your cache of location tracking, and to turn off the tracking completely. Now iOS 4.3.3 is available via iTunes for AT&T’s iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPads, and the fourth-gen iPod touch. There is a separate update, iOS 4.2.8, for Verizon’s iPhone. The release notes let us know that iOS 4.3.3 reduces the size of the location database cache, and stops backing up the cache to iTunes when your device is connected to a computer. It also deletes the cache completely when Location Services are turned off. There are possibly more bug fixes thrown into this update as well, but we’ll have to wait and see on that...

In Depth: What Apple's patents reveal about its plans

By TechRadar, published 30-04-2011

For anybody who wants to know what a company is thinking, just look at its patent portfolio. Patents are about protection: without them there's nothing to stop your rivals from copying your best ideas and making money from your hard work. If you patent your revolutionary unicorn-powered laptop and a rival copies you, you'll be able to sue them until they squeak - and possibly get their product pulled from the shelves too. Smart companies patent everything, and Apple is a smart company - so a trawl through Apple's worldwide patent applications can uncover future products. Back in 2006, patent application 20,060,268,528 showed what was described as a "portable computing device capable of wireless communications... [that] is a media player". Twitter Gets Hit With Class-Action Law Suit Over Unwanted Text Messages

By SlashGear, published 29-04-2011

Lawyers seem very trigger happy lately with class-action cases—well, when are they not?—with lawsuits recently filed against Apple and Google for location tracking, to Sony for the PlayStation Network breach, and to now a bizarre case against Twitter. Two Californian residents, Drew Moss and Sahar Maleksaeedi are suing Twitter for sending unwanted text messages. Moss and Maleksaeedi claim that Twitter sent them confirmation text messages after they sent text messages with the command ‘STOP’ to turn off all phone notifications. They claim that Twitter is engaging in unlawful conduct by contacting them via SMS without their consent. They say that this is not only an invasion of their privacy but a violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. The duo ...

iPhone sees 115% market share growth as LG dwindles

By SlashGear, published 29-04-2011

It’s a week of bad news for ZTE: not only has Huawei sued them, but Apple has snatched back its place in the IDC global phone rankings for the past quarter. Having taken fourth place in Q4 2010, ZTE now slips to fifth; Apple takes fourth with 18.7m shipments for 5-percent of the mobile phone market, behind LG in third, Samsung in second and Nokia maintaining first place. That first place is looking ever more tenuous, however, according to IDC’s figures. Nokia’s market share is down from 34.7-percent a year ago to 29.2-percent in Q1 2011, with shipment volumes climbing by less than one million units to 108.5m. Samsung too dropped share, down from 20.7-percent to 18.8-percent, as did LG, down from 8.7-percent to 6.6-percent. Only LG, however, actually saw a reduction in v...

South Park Spoofs Apple Location Tracking Controversy

The Apple location tracking controversy continues with denials from Apple and a class-action lawsuit pending. It sure didn’t take long for South Park to take a fun jab at the situation in their Season 15 episode titled HUMANCENTiPAD. Enjoy a short segment of the video after the cut. Researchers have discovered an unencrypted database file stored on iPhones and iPad 3GS devices that log location information of the user for up to a year. The data collected includes longitude and latitude coordinates estimated in relation to cell tower and hot spot locations and stored with timestamps. Android and Windows Phone devices have been pointed out to collect location information as well, but using a slightly different method. Android devices only record the last few dozen locations, whereas...

Verizon iPhone Sales Help Apple Become Third-Largest Handset Brand In The U.S.

By SlashGear, published 28-04-2011

According to market research firm NPD, thanks to the Verizon iPhone 4 launch, Apple has now become the third-largest mobile phone brand in the U.S. Sales for Apple’s smartphones have reached 14 percent of the U.S. market, ranking them ahead of HTC, Motorola, and RIM. Only Samsung and LG come ahead with 23 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Launching on Verizon in February, the iPhone 4 has since become one of the top five best-selling smartphones in the U.S., with the iPhone 3GS, Motorola Droid X, HTC EVO 4G, and HTC Droid Incredible rounding out the rest of NPD’s ranking. Certainly, the steep discounts given for the iPhone 3GS have helped fuel sales of the older generation unit. “Apple and Verizon had a very successful launch of the iPhone 4, which allowed the iPho...

Verizon 4G LTE back online

By SlashGear, published 28-04-2011

Verizon’s 4G LTE network is back up and running, after embarrassingly going offline yesterday on the same week that the carrier’s second 4G smartphone, the DROID Charge, goes on sale. Verizon is yet to confirm the exact reasons for the downtime, though did say yesterday that it had been “working with major vendors to restore connections.” Still, the day’s downtime hasn’t exactly convinced users that the network is stable, and combined with issues subscribers had getting their Thunderbolt 4G to connect to 3G networks, it’s been something of a black eye for the carrier. Verizon has also been criticized for its lack of communication during the outage. What remains to be seen, then, is how Verizon will handle the aftercare now that the network is b...

Gary Marshall: How the iPhone further threatens sat-nav apps

By TechRadar, published 28-04-2011

As Harry Hill didn't quite put it: I love sat navs, and I love smartphones. But which is better? Apple and Google, it seems, reckon that the answer is "smartphone".I think they're right. My quest for the perfect sat nav has cost me a fortune over the years, but the quest ended when I stuck the TomTom app on my iPhone.TomTom's app does everything I need it to do: it knows which routes to avoid at particular times of the day, it can tell me if there's roadworks, an accident or another problem up ahead, it auto-corrects its own maps via 3G downloads, it can look up addresses from my contacts and it can Google for places when I'm not entirely sure what they're called. It sucks battery power like a Dyson sucks up dirt and TomTom's own cradle is crazily expensive, but a cheap charger and a bit of ...

Channel 4?s 4oD Catch Up hits iPad (but it’s not perfect)

By SlashGear, published 28-04-2011

UK broadcaster Channel 4 has released a 4oD Catch Up app [iTunes link] for the iPad, offering access to content shown on Channel 4, E4 and More4 from the past thirty days. Like the BBC iPlayer app, it streams content previously shown on broadcast television. Unfortunately, as you’d expect there are some limitations. The app only works in the UK, and US shows are not currently available to watch; that’s all down to licensing issues, naturally. It will only stream over WiFi, not 3G, and currently requires iOS 4.x, though Channel 4 does say an iOS 3.x compatible version is in the works. There’s also no archive content – i.e. older shows that you can access via 4oD in your browser, or those shows that were shown outside of the 30-day window – though, again, Cha...

Microsoft Also Collects Location Data Of Windows Phone Users

The Apple location tracking drama just keeps heating up, with a full on class-action lawsuit having just been filed. Apple continues to point fingers at Google, with Steve Jobs supposedly saying “We don’t track anyone” and that Android does. Either way, the tracking by both Apple and Google have folks concerned, and now we can add to that Microsoft. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 devices are said to also store location data of its users. They have not yet answered how frequent the location data is transmitted and how long the location histories are stored. However, they have said that the location data is not saved directly on the device. This is different from Apple’s situation because researchers have found that the location data from an iPhone 4 is stored ...

Samsung Galaxy S II Review

By SlashGear, published 26-04-2011

Samsung has a lot riding on the Galaxy S II. When your displays, chips and memory are found in the flagship devices of OEMs around the world, you have to expect consumers will demand more from the hardware that bears your brand. The Galaxy S II (aka Galaxy S 2 or GSII) has even more to live up to: the original Galaxy S spawned several carrier variants that helped it become the best-selling Android smartphone in the US last year, and positioned Samsung as one of the key names to beat in the segment. So, with dual-core – and freshly overclocked – processor at the ready and a huge, Super AMOLED Plus display providing some eye-catching glitz, the Galaxy S II wades into the crowded smartphone market. White iPhone 4 prototype hits eBay

By SlashGear, published 26-04-2011

With the white iPhone 4 expected to go on sale later this week, now’s obviously the time to throw any prototypes you might have access to up on eBay. That’s just what seems to have happened here, with one hapless developer’s white handset going up on the auction site, and promising plenty of trouble for the individual responsible for it. It’s not clear whether this is someone trying to sell a lost iPhone 4 prototype or trying to make some money on a device they were trusted with. Unfortunately, thanks to the fact that the employee ID is clearly visible on the handset (we’ve blanked it out, along with the handset’s serial number), we imagine Apple will be moving swiftly to get to the bottom of it. Bidding is up to $2,838 at time of writing, with half a ...

Class action suit filed against Apple for iPhone location tracking

By SlashGear, published 26-04-2011

I use an iPhone and I will be the first to say that the thought of my iPhone tracking my movements is irritating. There is really no need for my iPhone to be storing where I go throughout my day. I also have to wonder if this extra tracking that is unneeded was turned off if my iPhone would run longer on a charge. I guess with all the press of the iPhone tracking and storing user movements, it was inevitable that a class action suit would be filed against Apple. Apparently the iPhone even tracks the users location when location services are off. Such a suit has now happened. Apparently, two iPad/iPhone users have filed a lawsuit against Apple seeking class action that accuses Apple of invasion of privacy and computer fraud. The suit also alleges that Apple “secretly recorded the mo...

iPhone storing tracking details on users even with location services off

By SlashGear, published 25-04-2011

There are a lot of times when you iPhone or other device needs to know your location to give you the service you are looking for. For instance if you are looking for a gas station near you or trying to find your way to a destination the app on your iPhone will need to know where you are right now. There are also times when your iPhone doesn’t need to know where you are and has no need to be storing those details. That is exactly what the iPhone is allegedly doing though, storing location data even when the user has locations services turned off. We reported last week that both the iPhone and Android devices were storing tracking details on the user of the phone is at set intervals and sending that data home. The iPhone stores the data, that data is sent to Apple intermittently, and...

Verizon reveals that iPhone 5 will be a 'global' phone

By TechRadar, published 21-04-2011

Apple will no doubt be firing off a strongly worded email to Verizon this afternoon, after a representative of the US network let slip that the iPhone 5 will be a 'global device'. This means that it will be able to roam on both CDMA networks (like Verizon in America) and GSM ones like those we use in the UK. The revelation came during a conference call in which Verizon discussed its quarterly results. JuicyIt's not clear if this means Apple will release just a dual-mode version, or if we'll see some iPhone 5s retain their single-radio status. Still, it's the first concrete leak we've had to play with on the iPhone 5 front; other more tenuously touted spec include a dual-core A5 processor, a larger screen, a metal back and full 1080p output thanks to an improved dual-core GPU. Sadly, no one...

iPhone tracking: Not new, but already used by law enforcement

By SlashGear, published 21-04-2011

Fall-out from news earlier this week that the iPhone and 3G-enabled iPad maintain a comprehensive log of location data continues, with suggestions that not only are the revelations not as fresh as they’re presented as, but arguments as to how dangerous the location collection actually is. Alex Levinson claims that the discovery of the “consolidated.db” database was in fact made several months ago, shortly after the release of the iPhone 4. The researcher also suggests that, contrary to much of the hype, the database itself is of relatively little importance, since Apple is not actually accessing it. “Apple is not harvesting this data from your device” Levinson insists, stating that “through my research in this field and all traffic analysis I have perf...

iPhone 3GS drops to budget price points

By TechRadar, published 21-04-2011

O2 has announced a new range of tariffs for the iPhone 3GS, offering a free phone from as little as £15.50 per month.Admittedly, this deal comes with no data and only 100 minutes per month, but it still represents a new price low for the older phone.Traditionally, an iPhone price drop coincides with a bid to clear stock ahead of a new model emerging - it's interesting this should happen when the iPhone 5 is set to be delayed.Budget bustersThe price drops have only affected the two cheapest two-year deals for O2 though, indicating that the bubbly network is perhaps simply trying to appeal to a new market.Apple's iPhone prices have always been strictly regimented across networks in the past, so any kind of price drop is always likely to raise suspicions that something is afoot - especially ...

Verizon Q1 2011: 2.2m iPhone 4 and 260k ThunderBolt

By SlashGear, published 21-04-2011

Verizon Wireless is the next to announce its Q1 2011 financial results, and it’s a strong start to both its LTE 4G network – with over 500,000 LTE devices activated – and its iPhone 4 sales – with 2.2m Apple handsets activated. Over 260,000 HTC ThunderBolt phones have been sold in a two week period, helping total wireless revenues lift 10.2-percent over last year to $16.9bn. Subscribers increased by 1.8m – more than half of which postpaid retail consumers – to a total of 104m, a 6.1-percent increase on the previous year. Meanwhile retail postpaid ARPU (average revenue per user) climbed 2.2-percent to $53.52; data revenues rose $5.5 billion, up $1.0 billion or 22.3-percent year over year, representing 38.1-percent of all Verizon Wireless’ service...

The iPad 3G and iPhone Track Your Every Movement: Researchers

By HotHardware, published 21-04-2011

Security researchers have discovered that iOS devices have been saving the locations of users' devices at regular intervals, and storing them in an unencrypted, though hidden file. The data includes locations and time stamps, and is apparently intentional: the database is backed up, and restored across backups, and even onto a new device if...

iPhone / Samsung F700 / Prada Phone Rumors Debunked

By SlashGear, published 20-04-2011

The following image has been circulating the internet for the past few days, resulting in mass hysteria due to the fact that Apple is currently suing the pants off of Samsung for infringing on their copyrights. This image appears to show that the Samsung F700 was first shown at CEBIT 2006 and released in February of 2007. What whoever made the image didn’t take the time to do was check their facts and find that although Samsung may have spoken about advancing their cell phone plans previous to 2007, they only showed the F700 design for the first time February 8th, 2007. First, have a look at the following press release. It lets you know exactly when the F700 was released in early, but not early enough, 2007: Seoul, February 8th, 2007 – Samsung today announced a new addition to it...

iPhone 4 design patent granted as Apple/Samsung fight continues

By SlashGear, published 20-04-2011

Given the ongoing legal spat between Apple and Samsung, it seems particularly timely for Apple’s patent on the original design of the iPhone 4 to be granted by the USPTO. Filed back in September 2010, and approved earlier this week, the patent covers all angles of the fourth-gen smartphone’s physical design. The iOS UI – which is another area where Apple claims Samsung has taken a little too much inspiration – isn’t actually included in this particular patent. Anything shown with a broken line isn’t part of the filing. Of course, Apple’s main complaint regarding Samsung concerns not so much the iPhone 4 but the design of the iPhone 3G/3GS, which the company reckons is far too similar to the Galaxy S to be coincidental. Apple holds the ornamental ...

iPhone and iPad 3G caught keeping secret location tracking database [Video]

By SlashGear, published 20-04-2011

Apple has tracked every iPhone and iPad 3G user’s physical location since the release of iOS 4.0, security researchers have discovered, with a secret backup of positions and timestamps kept on any Mac or PC the devices are synchronized with. Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden found that, from iOS 4.0, an unencrypted and otherwise unprotected database of locations has been created for each user, and have even produced an app, iPhone Tracker, to demonstrate exactly how much data is being clandestinely collected. That database – “consolidated.db” – contains latitude-longitude coordinates along with a timestamp for each point. What prompts each individual record is unknown, but it appears to be using cell-tower triangulation on devices fitted with 3G radios to pinp...

Latest version of Apple TV still selling well

By SlashGear, published 20-04-2011

I have the original Apple TV and I can say without a doubt it was a worthless device for me. I used it maybe three times and it sits crammed into a drawer unused today. The new Apple TV had some changes to make it smaller and work better and so far, it has proven to me considerably more popular than that original device. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from Concord Securities published the findings of a survey conducted of Apple suppliers this week that shows sales of the new Apple TV have merited consistent since the device launched last year. Sales of the Apple TV hit 250,000 units in the first six weeks and hit a million sold right before Christmas of 2010. The new device launched in October 2010. Kuo believes that Apple has shipped 820,000 units of the Apple TV in Q2 fiscal 2011 running from Ja...

Let's raid the iPhone 5 rumour fridge to find the tomatoes of truth amid the stinky stilton of baseless speculation.iPhone 5 release dateThe Apple Worldwide Developers' Conference 2011 date has been announced as 6 June 2011, so it's possible we'll see the iPhone 5 break cover there. However, Jim Dalrymple at The Loop says that this year's WWDC will be about software, not hardware, with Apple focussing on iOS and Mac OS.This fits with Apple's established rhythm of iPhone releases, with new models appearing in late June or early July each year. So it's a safe bet that the iPhone 5 release date (UK a...

Intel To Design ZTE Mobile Phone For Sale In China?

By SlashGear, published 04-12-2011

According to Bloomberg sources, Intel may be attempting to secure a spot for their mobile chips by first infiltrating the Chinese phone market. Their sources claim that Intel has submitted designs of a handset based on a version of Intel’s Atom microprocessor. The phone will be manufactured by ZTE Corp and may go on sale in China. Intel has been trying to break into the smartphone industry without much success, lagging far behind rivals, and still too dependent than they’d prefer on the personal computer market. Currently there are no phones on sale that use Intel processors. The surprise move of Nokia jumping ship from Intel to Microsoft back in February also didn’t help in the company’s efforts to make headway into smartphones. When asked about working with ZT...

Bharti Airtel, and later Aircel, today announced the imminent Indian launch of the Apple iPhone 4, and everyone wants to know what the damage will be. As always, substantially more than its U.S. price. [RE [...] Read the entire article

Android App Spotlight: Titanium Media Sync

By MaximumPC, published 04-05-2011

You know what sucks about the iPhone? If you said the walled-garden approach to applications, you're correct. If you said "Apple's fanatical devotion to industrial design," you're less correct. If you said, "dealing with the steaming pile of masticated vegetable matter and half-cooked industrial byproduct that is iTunes every time I want to add something to my iPhone or remove that thing from my iPhone," you win! And the prize is an Android phone, which, if you're reading this, you probably already own. If not, go get one. We'll wait. There are many ways to get data to and from your Android device without ever doing something so gauche as attaching it to your computer with a USB cable. Apps like WinAmp and DoubleTwist AirSync allow you to sync music over WiFi, to say nothing of more advanc...

iPad 2 top tablet says Consumer Reports

By SlashGear, published 04-05-2011

Consumer Reports has never been keen on the iPhone 4, criticizing both the original AT&T and newer Verizon versions for their antenna performance, but the independent buyers’ guide has no such qualms about the iPad 2. “Some series competitors are finally hitting the market” the organization says, but having tested ten models they’re still leaning toward recommending the Apple slate. Models from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung and ViewSonic were pitted against Apple’s first- and second-gen iPads, and judged on touchscreen responsiveness, versatility, portability, screen glare and ease-of-use. Top place went to the iPad 2 WiFi + 3G 32GB, but the first-gen iPad tied with Motorola’s XOOM. Battery life proved particularly variable, with the iPad 2...

Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc

By TechRadar, published 04-04-2011

Sony Ericsson's original Xperia X10 was a brave first go at an Android phone, offering a large screen, a collection of social media enhancements and a stylised version of Google's rapidly growing mobile operating system. However, the X10 was hindered by delays, held back by glitchy software and arrived running the already ageing Android 1.6 - and only received an update to 2.1 recently. It was, to put it mildly, a bit of a mess. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc obliterates all of those awkward memories in a flash. It's running the very latest Android 2.3.2 version of the OS. It's arrived on time. It's fast, and it's very, very stylish indeed. And it's not that expensive for a single-core Android phone in 2011 at £430 SIM free or £30 per month on contract - can Sony Ericsson's Reality Display, ...

iPhone 4, Apple TV and more get new PwnageTool jailbreak

By SlashGear, published 04-04-2011

New versions of the iPhone Dev Team’s PwnageTool and redsn0w iOS jailbreak tools havebeen released, to handle iOS 4.3.1. Offering a jailbreak option for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 (GSM version), along with the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch, first-gen iPad and second-gen Apple TV – but not the Verizon iPhone 4 or the iPad 2, yet – it’s an untethered solution meaning you don’t have to plug your device into a PC/Mac whenever you want to restart it. Right now, only the PwnageTool works on the Apple TV, and those using ultrasn0w to unlock their device should steer clear altogether. If not, you could lose your unlock completely; the Dev Team is working on a new version of ultrasn0w that will play nicely with custom IPSW files. As for the iPad 2, that requires...

Smartphone Screens: How Big is Too Big?

By SlashGear, published 04-03-2011

I head up the Consumer Devices group at Current Analysis, where we have two complementary products: data – we track product pricing, availability, and specs – and analysis – our assessment on how competitive various products and initiatives are. I recently had a client ask a question that crossed both: how many smartphones today have super-sized screens, and how big is too big? (I warned them that the answer would make a great SlashGear column.) The data answer is simple: 13% of the smartphones at the four national carriers in the U.S. have screens 4” or larger. The analytical answer is a bit more complicated. When discussing screen sizes, I don’t think you can ignore the elephant in the room – Apple – which limits its product line and does a lot of thinking and...

iPhone 5 8MP camera tipped after Sony CEO slip

Isn’t that something? They buy our best sensors from us?” Back in April 2010, reports surfaced based on analyst checks that Apple was looking to Sony for an 8-megapixel camera for the fifth-gen iPhone. The same report accurately predicted the 5-megapixel upgrade for the iPhone 4. Sony does not currently supply A...

HTC Thunderbolt Sales Surpass The iPhone 4 At Verizon Stores, Says Analyst

By SlashGear, published 04-01-2011

According to BTIG Research analyst Walter Piecyk, the HTC Thunderbolt is showing up the iPhone 4 by matching and even outselling the Apple smartphone in many Verizon Wireless stores. The informal study conducted by Piecyk involved calling 150 different Verizon Wireless locations across 22 major U.S. cities and asking which smartphone was selling better. The survey found that the devices were selling about the same at 61% of the Verizon Wireless stores. However, 11% of the stores said that the iPhone 4 was selling faster while 28% of the stores said that the ThunderBolt outsold the iPhone 4. So what does this survey say about smartphone sales or Android versus iOS preferences in the market? Not very much. The survey was conducted during the two weeks following the Thunderbolt launch in mi...

First-gen iPad refurb stock dwindles (but bargains still to be had)

By SlashGear, published 04-01-2011

The time to scoop a cut-price first-gen iPad is fast running out, as Apple’s remaining stock – discounted since the launch of the iPad 2 – dwindles. The iPad WiFi 16GB, which was slashed to $349, is now no longer available, making the cheapest “iPad 1″ now the WiFi 32GB model at $429, still $70 cheaper than the entry-level 16GB iPad 2. If it’s an iPad WiFi + 3G you’re after, the 16GB first-gen model is $479. That’s $150 less than the iPad 2 models equipped with 3G, though of course you won’t get the option to pick Verizon as your data carrier. The differences between the iPad 1 and iPad 2 are all laid out in our comparison feature, and we talk a more about the upgrade process in our iPad 2 Skeptic’s Review. You may not have the ...

Apple offers up new OS X Lion build for devs

By SlashGear, published 31-03-2011

If you are an Apple fan, you have undoubtedly heard at this point that the focus of WWDC this year will supposedly not be hardware but the OS X Lion operating system for Macs and iOS for the iPhone and iPad. Apparently, the first version of Lion that was offered up for devs to check out had a lot of bugs in it. Apple is also said to consider this new build to be a GM1 revision. That first offering stayed just the way it was for a month and now TechCrunch reports that Apple has put a new updated version of the OS up for devs to download and try again via the Mac App Store. Normal geeks can’t get the OS, it’s only for developers. The original version of Lion that was offered was 11A390 and the new version that is up as of now is 11A419 so in that month time there have been many ...

iPad 2: The Skeptic’s Review

By SlashGear, published 30-03-2011

A year ago I wrote a skeptic’s review of the first-generation iPad, a more personal report on the original model from my perspective as a tabletophile and a blogger. Since then we’ve seen the launch of a few Android slates – though not the deluge we were perhaps expecting – and of course, most recently, the arrival of the iPad 2. How does the second-generation iPad hold up, and has Apple answered my original complaints? Read on for my iPad 2 Skeptic’s Review. For the full background story of my tablet love, you should probably read the original review. Since then I’ve used and reviewed multiple slates, running Windows, Android and other platforms, for varying lengths of time. The two I’ve lived with, however, have been the iPad 1 and Samsung̵...

Revealed: The 15 Best New Smartphones for 2011

By MaximumPC, published 30-03-2011

Smartphone Tech Trends of 2011 Strong, healthy competition in a budding market has aided significantly in the rapid advancement of Smartphone technology that we’ve seen so far this year. Smartphone performance alone has grown by leaps and bounds, at rates which we likely won’t see again for several years, but this doesn’t mean progress will be stifled. In fact, things should continue along at this accelerated rate throughout the rest of the year. As more devices adopt the dual-core approach, there will be a push for quad-core processors, which should be achievable and on the market by the end of this year. Pairing that with optimizations in low-power DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, we should be seeing high-end Smartphone increase their performance two-fold within the next 12 months, after which p...

LTE iPhone 5 in time for Holiday 2011: Apple Rumor Roundup

By SlashGear, published 29-03-2011

With it looking unlikely that Apple will be bringing the iPhone 5 to WWDC 2011 in early June, speculation has returned to circling how the company’s hardware plans may shape up for the rest of the year. Rather than a June launch, there are suggestions that Apple will release the white iPhone 4 later in the spring and use that to prolong the handset’s shelf-life until a Q4 2011 refresh. That later date might allow for the inclusion of 4G LTE connectivity, in an attempt to better take on what’s expected to be a growing number of LTE-equipped Android devices. According to Macotakara, Apple is yet to order components for the iPhone 5, and sources claim the fifth-generation smartphone will not contribute to the company’s fiscal 2011; that period ends on September 24. Review: Apple MacBook (2011)

By TechRadar, published 27-03-2011

With the continuing popularity of the iPad, iPhone and iPod range, Apple's laptop sales have seen an impressive boost in recent months. The Apple MacBook is its entry-level model, and while some could argue it offers limited value, it's still a great choice. The main argument against Apple's laptops is that despite their use of older technology, they still cost the same as cutting-edge Windows-based machines. The MacBook uses a last generation Intel 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo P8600 processor, rather than a Core i5 chip as seen in the Acer Aspire 5943G and Fujitsu Lifebook S710. While the difference in performance is significant, there's still ample power to run the excellent Mac OS X 10.6 operating system and software with plenty of speed. Graphics are just as capable. Apple Releases iOS 4.3.1 For Minor Bug Fixes

By SlashGear, published 25-03-2011

The fresh scent of iOS 4.3 has yet to wear off, and Apple is already releasing an update. Today, iOS 4.3.1 has just been unleashed to bring us minor bug fixes and some other improvements. The update will fix the image flickering issue that the Apple Digital AV Adapter was experiencing with some TVs. It will also fix the graphics glitches on the fourth generation iPod touch. It also resolves some issues related to activating and connecting to some cellular networks along with issues authenticating some enterprise web services. There were rumors earlier in the week that claimed an imminent iOS 4.3.1 update within the next two weeks would fix a battery life issue. However, this actual update doesn’t seem to address that matter specifically. The update is also only available to GSM ver...

AT&T buys T-Mobile USA for £24bn

By TechRadar, published 22-03-2011

AT&T has purchased T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a deal which establishes the network as the single biggest carrier in the United States. The $39bn (£24m) agreement, which is still to be approved by regulators, would see AT&T overhaul Verizon Wireless as the most dominant network stateside with a 43 per cent share of the market.AT&T will retire the T-Mobile name in the USA, when the takeover is completed in 2012, and take full advantage of the T-Mobile network infrastructure to improve its own over-burdened network. The deal is the second T-Mobile sell-off German giant Deutsche Telekom has made in the last couple of years, with T-Mobile UK merging with Orange to form the Everything Everywhere network.Less choice?T-Mobile USA had offered customers cheaper contracts and better contrac...

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 12 2011

By SlashGear, published 20-03-2011

Another week in the history books and another Week in Review for you to check out. We started the week last week with the alarms not working on older OS versions of the iPhone. At least the alarms were an hour early and not an hour late. The only fix for me was updating to the latest version of the OS. Terminix and its ad agency created a billboard in Dallas last week using thousands of live roaches. The board was designed to warn people of the germs roaches carry and to set an example to all the roaches watching of what can happen if they come into your home. Analysts claim that Apple sold a million iPad 2 tablets last week. Best Buy is said to have sold out in ten minutes. The Japanese market Prius will get an option for lithium ion battery packs. A cheaper model will continue to use t...

iPhone 5: To Have Or Not To Have NFC Chip?

By SlashGear, published 18-03-2011

The stories are all over the place about whether the future iPhone 5 will have an NFC chip. The latest is brought to us from a tweet by Forbes tech reporter Elizabeth Woyke who says that the next iPhone will have NFC capabilities. NFC stands for Near Field Communication and it allows users to simply wave their phone over sensors to pay for things, and supports more mobile media sharing. “Just met with an entrepreneur who says the iPhone 5 *will* have NFC…according to his friend, who works for Apple,” tweeted Woyke earlier today. The iPhone 5 would work great with NFC because of the credit card information Apple already has with payments over iTunes for movies, apps, and music. Earlier in the week The Independent reported that the next iPhone wouldn’t have NFC because Apple was c...

Android Loading Websites Faster Than iPhone Report Debunked

By SlashGear, published 17-03-2011

Earlier this morning we stated some skepticism over the released report stating that Android’s native phone browser rendered websites 52% faster than on Apple’s Safari browser for the iPhone. It turns out that the companies own CTO pointed out to CNET some of the critical flaws, mainly that the tests were done using UIWebView instead of Safari. The Safari application has benefitted from increased software improvements where as UIWebView is a simple browser that can be embedded into apps and has not benefitted from the latest software enhancements. We thought the whole thing was suspect when many of their results did not match our own internal benchmarking. It turns out the primary reason for this is that we have been benchmarking websites using Safari not UIWebView. The r...

1m iPad 2 sales claims analyst; Best Buy sold out in 10 mins

By SlashGear, published 14-03-2011

More analysts are weighing in with iPad 2 sales predictions, and for once notorious soothsayer Gene Munster isn’t the one offering pie-in-the-sky figures. He predicted around 400,000 iPad 2 sales, constrained because of supply issues that have left the second-gen tablet sold out online, while Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland believes as many as 1m iPad 2 units could’ve sold over the weekend. “We would not be surprised to see Apple sell closer to 1 million iPad 2s in the opening weekend” Sutherland predicted. Meanwhile, Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry has tipped three times the amount of iPad 2 sales as of the original iPad, which Apple sold 300,000 of in the first day. He also suggests that AT&T’s iPad 2 WiFi + 3G model was mo...

AT&T to add caps to DSL and U-verse broadband plans

By SlashGear, published 14-03-2011

If you are an AT&T subscriber with U-verse or DSL connectivity in your home we have some bad news. AT&T is set to add caps to the broadband plans that will see users that go over set amounts monthly being hit with overage charges. Letters will be going out next week to notify users of AT&T services. Apparently, the cap for DSL subscribers will be 150GB monthly. If you are a U-Verse subscriber, the cap will be 250GB monthly. These tidbits came from AT&T representative Seth Bloom at SXSW in Austin. If a customer goes over those data limits, they will be charged $10 for each additional 50GB block of data. Bloom says that users that go over the caps will get a onetime grace period and after that, the user will be notified when they have reached 65% of the monthly allowed data...

AT&T vs. Verizon iPad 2 Data Plans Comparison Graph

By SlashGear, published 03-11-2011

Apple’s iPad 2 goes on sale today and for those who are getting a data plan along with it you might need a calculator. Unlike the first generation iPad, the iPad 2 will be carried on both AT&T and Verizon and between the two carriers you’ll have to choose from eight different data plans. CNN has provided a nice graph to make your decision a little easier. The plan you choose really depends on how much data you think you’ll use because of the overage charges you’ll get hit with. You have to take into account how much you’ll actually be on the carrier’s network and not on Wi-Fi, because that doesn’t count towards your data use. AT&T offers a prepaid and postpaid plan and both plans will cost you $15 for each 250 megabytes or $25 for the first 2 gigbytes used in a mo...

Review: iOS 4.3

By TechRadar, published 03-11-2011

The latest revision of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 4.3, sneakily arrived on 9 March - a couple of days before its official release date.As with other versions of iOS, many of the changes are minor, but there are nonetheless fairly major updates to Home Sharing and AirPlay, along with the introduction of a long-awaited personal hotspot feature.Naturally, the release also retains revisions included in previous versions of iOS 4.x, such as multitasking, springboard folders, Find My iPhone, Game Center and enhanced Mail.Home SharingSince iOS devices have utterly fixed storage, they are restrictive for anyone who has a large media library.Even the iPad 2 won't assist on this score, since it tops out (like the current-generation iPod touch) at a mere 64GB of storage (several GB of which...

In Depth: Apple iPad 2: 12 things you need to know

By TechRadar, published 03-02-2011

So Apple's latest worst-kept secret is out – it's released a new iPad to keep the Android pack at bay. And while it's a stunner visually, you'll see that iPad 2 is an iteration in terms of its core specs. Here's everything you need to know about the new iPad 2.1. iPad 2 is lighter and thinnerApple called it an all-new design. And it is. iPad 2 vs iPad 1 [Original]

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

What’s changed between a few hours ago and now? If you were to have purchase an iPad yesterday, would you be crying today? Short answer – yes. Long answer – lets look at the specs on both machines. While it may appear from about 20 feet away that these devices look basically the same, there’s quite a few lovely additions to the iPad 2 that bring it right in line for competing with what Apple has called the “Year of the copycats” – referring directly to Android and Blackberry devices on the horizon (and in the streets, if you consider Motorola XOOM, the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS optimized tablet.) But what’s the real question here for those dedicated fans of Apple? What will I get when I trade in my old iPad for the iPad 2? First of all...

No Hybrid Modem for 3G iPad 2; Verizon iPad 2 lacks Global Roaming

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

Unlike the original iPad, Apple is offering AT&T and Verizon versions of the iPad 2 WiFi + 3G out of the door. Unfortunately, carrier choice doesn’t offer quite the flexibility we were hoping for: according to Apple, “the iPad model you purchase is specially configured to work with either AT&T or Verizon — not both.” “While you don’t have to activate 3G service right away, you should choose your iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G according to the carrier you prefer” Apple warns. We’d hoped that the iPad 2 would have a hybrid GSM/CDMA modem which could be used on both AT&T’s 3G/UMTS and Verizon’s EVDO Rev.A networks, but sadly that’s not the case. In fact, if you opt for the Verizon iPad 2 WiFi + 3G, then just as with the Verizon iPho...

iPad 2 coming March 11

By GameSpot, published 03-02-2011

Apple unveils new 33-percent-thinner tablet with dual-core A5 processor, front- and rear-facing cameras, HD video; HDMI output available with adaptor; available for AT&T and Verizon. This morning, right next door to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Apple held an event at which it--as rumored--unveiled the iPad 2. The new device is thinner and more powerful than its elder sibling and has several new features and improvements. It also has a much-earlier-than-expected ship date of March 11--just over one week away. The iPad 2 is just over one week away. The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than its predecessor, but it boasts the same screen size and resolution. It will sport a new dual-core A5 processor but will still ha...

Apple Announces iPad 2, Your iPad 1 is Obsolete

By MaximumPC, published 03-02-2011

Sorry folks, but if you invested in a first generation iPad, your tablet is officially old news, behind the times, yesterday's headline, and all that jazz. As expected, Apple officially announced the iPad 2 today during a much anticipated press event in which everyone knew what was coming. What wasn't known, however, is what exactly would separate the iPad 2 from Apple's first generation tablet, or how the pricing would shake out. Most of what was leaked out ahead of the launch turned out to be true. The iPad 2 maintains the same 9.7-inch LED backlit LCD screen as the original, only now the magical tablet is 33 percent thinner as it measures a scant 8.8mm, and up to 15 percent lighter, depending on which model you go with. It has a new dual-core A5 processor that's supposed to be twice as ...

Updated: Apple iPad 2: our first impressions

By TechRadar, published 03-02-2011

Apple may have sold 15 million first-version iPads, but the company isn't resting on its laurels. Steve Jobs has just announced the iPad 2 in San Francisco and there will be a white version as well as a black one. But what do we think of it at first glance? However, iPad 2 isn't the extreme makeover many were expecting. The device costs the same as the current iPad ($499 in the US) and comes with the same 16, 32 and 64GB memory configurations. The iPad 2 UK release date is 25 March, so expect it to start from £439 as before, unless we're really going to get done over in the UK. The main physical thing is that the new iPad is thinner - 33 per cent thinner, clocking it at 8.8mm, or thinner than the iPhone 4 (which clocks in at 9.3mm). Wow. It looks incredible and has the expected front-faci...

iMovie for iPad revealed

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

Apple’s is taking on criticisms that its tablet is only intended for content consumption, and alongside the iPad 2 it has also unveiled iMovie for iPad. Set to go on sale on March 11 – alongside the iPad 2 – for $4.99 in the App Store, it allows for video editing of the 720p HD video the new slate’s rear camera can record, with a precision editor and support for multitrack audio. There are three preset themes – Neon, Simple, and CNN iReport – which each come with titles, transitions, and an accompanying soundtrack, and you can drop in still photos with Ken Burns-style panning effect that uses face recognition to make sure peoples’ faces are always in frame. There’s also titling support, with various fonts and finishes. The integrated microp...

iOS 4.3 due March 11 for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

Apple has officially announced iOS 4.3, which will ship pre-loaded on the iPad 2 and be available as a free download for existing iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM) and 3rd/4th-Gen iPod touch owners from Friday, March 11. The new version includes the Nitro Javascript engine from the OS X version of Safari for faster web-browsing, along with an updated version of iTunes Home Sharing that allows you to stream music from iTunes on the desktop to your iOS device. Meanwhile there’s also the new version of AirPlay, with audio and video sharing support for third-party App Store apps. The AT&T iPhone 4 will get Personal Hotspot functionality, like the Verizon model has, and – perhaps most anticipated – the side switch will be user-assignable to either mute or rotation-lock, p...

Apple iOS 4.3 Released at iPad 2 Event

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

Scott Forstall stood on stage after Steve Jobs introduced the first official look at the iPad 2 as we sat in the audience and looked upon the new icon with a gigantic 4.3 emblazoned upon it. This is definitely been in the cannon for a little while, its release being timed perfectly with the release of iPad 2. Safari performance has been improved with the Nitro JavaScript engine (exciting!) iTunes home sharing is introduced, allowing you to get all of your content directly over a Wifi connection. AirPlay has been improved, with a single tap on the AirPlay icon popping up a window that shows your Apple TV if it’s in range (or whichever other device will play nice with it, we suppose!) Continuing on with the AirPlay improvements, sharing photos now has a built-in slide show option. Fu...

Apple iPad 2 Official

By SlashGear, published 03-02-2011

We’re here at the Apple iPad 2 event where we’ve just been informed of none other than the big news maker itself, the iPad 2. This device is set to be released with a new Apple A5 dual-core processor, 512MB or RAM, front and rear-facing cameras, FaceTime for iPad support, and a display that’s the same size and resolution as the original. This device comes in both black and white, the metal on the back still being silver, the front bezel giving you the opportunity to side with the light side or the dark! Inside you’ll find a dual-core A5 CPU, up to 2x faster with 9x faster graphics, with the same low power as the A4 chip. This is what they say will be the first dual-core tablet to ship in volume. There will indeed be a camera on the front of the tablet as well as t...

MacBook Pro 15-inch Review (early 2011)

By SlashGear, published 03-01-2011

Apple’s MacBook Pro refresh last week didn’t get a press event with huge fanfare, but it’s arguably the most important update to the notebook range in some time. Bringing in Intel’s 2011 Core processor range across the board, and spicing up the larger models with AMD discrete graphics, the new versions may look the same but they promise a huge leap in performance. The high-end 15-inch MacBook Pro arrived on the SlashGear test bench last Thursday and we’ve been putting it through its paces ever since. Could this really be the best notebook around? Check out the full review after the cut. Hardware At first glance, there’s little to differentiate this new MacBook Pro from the model it replaces. Gary Marshall: The iPad 2 is rubbish

By TechRadar, published 03-01-2011

When Apple unveils the iPad 2 tomorrow, it's going to be a massive let-down. Shares in the company will wobble. Android fans will do happy dances. And all over the internet, people will write about how much of a disappointment it is, how Steve Jobs has lost his touch and how the Motorola Xoom / BlackBerry PlayBook / a piece of wood with a face drawn on it in biro is the new tablet king. And they'll be right, to an extent.Make no mistake, the iPad 2 we see tomorrow will be a disappointment. But it won't be a disappointment because it's a bad device, or because it doesn't take the iPad forward. It will be a disappointment because it isn't the entirely imaginary device the internet has been happily inventing for the last few months.Apple watchers have been playing a game of "my dad's bigger th...

Review: HTC 7 Pro

By TechRadar, published 28-02-2011

Windows Phone 7 has been with us since last October, where the first flurry of handsets came quickly with a trio from HTC, the HD7, HTC 7 Mozart and HTC 7 Trophy being joined by the Samsung Omnia 7 and LG Optimus 7.Since then, things have been a little quiet on the hardware front, with the Dell Venue Pro only just surfacing. However, we anticipate the arrival of an update to the Windows Phone software very soon, and of course Nokia's recent announcement that it is joining forces with Microsoft on the smartphone front has turned heads. Now we've a new piece of hardware to gawk at too, the HTC 7 Pro. This is the first Windows Phone 7 smartphone to have a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and, as such, it is an obvious candidate for the businessperson. But if it's well designed and sleek enough, it m...

iPhone 6 or iPad 3 to come with 6-inch screen?

By TechRadar, published 21-02-2011

Apple is said to be working on a 6-inch device to sit somewhere between the current iPhone and iPad ranges. A "connected industry expert" has told AppleInsider that Apple intends to widen its range with a device that sits somewhere between the iPhone and the iPad size-wise, with a 6-inch display. The mystery 6-incher could be the iPad 3, which has been speculated to launch later this year, or the iPhone 6, dwarfing the current iPhone 4's 3.5-inch display. Honey, I shrunk the iPadSome industry insiders, however, are more confident that we'll see a big iPod touch than a mega iPhone or a mini iPad - particularly given Apple's critical view of smaller tablet screens. A blown-up iPod touch would fill a gap in Apple's portable device range, allowing apps and emails to be enjoyed on a bigger scre...

The XPERIA Play’s Gaming Appeal Is Practically Non-Existent

By SlashGear, published 17-02-2011

Apple’s iPhone has done quite a bit to change the mobile market. It has ushered in the touch-screen craze, delivered an easy way to get third-party programs onto the platform, and generally changed how all other mobile phones are judged. But one of the most significant changes the iPhone initiated was the growth of gaming on smartphones. Thanks to the Apple App Store, more and more people are downloading games like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and countless others. The iPhone is now a full-fledged gaming device that, by all measures, can be compared to the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PSP. That success has prompted Apple competitors, like Sony Ericsson, to double down on gaming for mobile phones. Announced at the Mobile World Congress, Sony Ericsson’s upcoming XPERIA Play runs Android and ...

Verizon iPhone 4 Lower Than Expected Sales Numbers Leaked

By SlashGear, published 16-02-2011

Verizon’s much hyped iPhone 4 launch touted record setting pre-orders only to be greeted with embarrassingly small store queues and now disappointing actual sales numbers. BGR got hold of leaked sales data showing a comparison of Verizon versus AT&T’s first-week iPhone 4 sales. Although the comparison shows that Verizon sales came out ahead, the numbers are apparently lower than what Apple and Verizon had expected. The sales data shows unit sales from five Apple stores combined, two of which are very prominent Apple stores: - Thursday: Verizon = 909, AT&T = 539 - Friday: Verizon = 916, AT&T = 680 - Saturday: Verizon = 660, AT&T = 471 - Sunday: Verizon = 796, AT&T = 701 - Monday: Verizon = 711, AT&T = 618 Other data revealed statistics of who actually bo...

AT&T Unleashes $49 iPhone 3GS Commercials

By SlashGear, published 15-02-2011

With the iPhone no longer exclusive to one carrier, the new competition with Verizon has pushed AT&T to launch a slew of strategic promotions to retain its customers. The latest bait is an iPhone 3GS for $49. They just unleashed a commercial for the offer, which should entice those late adopters on a budget. The iPhone 3GS is getting close to two years old, but at a price tag that’s $150 cheaper than a 16GB iPhone 4, it should open up a whole new demographic of iPhone users. Rumors that Apple was planning on an iPhone nano to target lower end markets, should prove unlikely if huge price drops of older iPhone models becomes the pattern. Other than getting locked into a two-year contract, getting a full blown iPhone for under $50 should land the phone in many many new hands. ...

Hands on: BBC iPlayer for Android review

By TechRadar, published 02-10-2011

You've probably already noticed that the new BBC iPlayer for iPad app impressed us quite a bit when we tested it earlier today. Can the Beeb's Android app deliver the same slick experience? The issues with comparing iOS apps to their Android equivalent are obvious. The main problem is that while iPhone and iPad apps can be optimised for Apple's very precise hardware configurations, Android apps have to cater for a massive variety of devices with different specs. The upshot of that is that most iPad apps are slick and smooth, while Android apps can sometimes be a bit hit and miss. And it doesn't help when publishers shoot themselves in the foot by missing out crucial features. The BBC's iPlayer apps tell the whole story. You can guess where we're going with this – while the iPad app glides a...

BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB for $499 at Office Depot

By SlashGear, published 02-10-2011

More and more details about availability and pricing for BlackBerry’s PlayBook are popping up and the latest is from Office Depot where the 7-inch tablet can be yours for $499.99. The release date says “week 17” which puts it around the last week of April. The PlayBook will have 16 GB, WiFi, and is capable of 3G speeds when tethered to a Blackberry phone. The pricing is competitive with Apple’s iPad but still higher than many Android powered tablets out on the market. This is the first real solid price for a PlayBook so it’s good to see RIM keeping it relatively moderate and under $500. There are plenty out there who are eager to see what PlayBook can do and make sure its not just an oversized BlackBerry smartphone. RIM needs to get the PlayBook out as soon as it can before Ap...

Verizon’s iPhone 4: I Was Wrong. Here’s Why.

“The surest way for an analyst to generate attention is by making an Apple prediction. Apple has a cult following, and its product development and launch strategy is famously secretive, so the fact that your source is the lunch counter guy across the block from the Hon Hai factory in Taiwan won’t be discovered (or may even be considered authoritative!)” Those were the opening lines in my first column for SlashGear back in October of 2009. I went on to note that while I don’t usually make specific product predictions, I would go out on a limb and provide a guess on when we’d see an iPhone on Verizon Wireless: in 2014, when Verizon Wireless completed its LTE rollout. By then, Apple could provide a single iPhone that worked across both AT&T and Verizon Wireless LTE...

iPhone 5 Rumored To Debut June 5th – 9th

This speculation was stirred up after the Moscone Center website published a schedule indicating that a mysterious event dubbed “Corporate Meeting” was booked by Apple for those dates. Apple has traditionally unveiled new generations of their iPhones at the WWDC event each year. However, there are two other Apple “Corporate Meetings / Events” listed on the Moscone schedule for May 10-11 and June 22-23. It is speculated that the May event could be related to announcements for the iPad 2. The June 22-23 event seems to be scheduled too closely to the dates of the WWDC for any sort of important announcement, but those dates almost exactly one year after iPhon...

Incase you are from outer space and do not know, FDA stands for US Food and Drug Administration, and they’ve just approved an app that’ll work on both iPad and iPhone (and we assume iPod Touch too, since that’s generally what happens,) that last surfaced when it won the Apple Design Award for “Best iPhone Healthcare & Fitness Application” in 2008. This app, the FDA notes, “is not intended to replace full workstations and is indicated for use only when there is no access to a workstation.” The app is called “Mobile MIM” an essentially displays on a screen what you’d normally see printed on film and hung up on a light wall. When you get a broken bone, or for example when police officers want to see how many bullets you’...

AT&T Rewarding Loyalty With Free Microcell

By SlashGear, published 02-04-2011

AT&T has recently been sending out emails to some of its customers offering free microcells as rewards for staying loyal customers. Could this be another attempt to thwart the mass exodus they fear with the already record setting sales that is the Verizon iPhone 4 pre-order numbers? The e-mail from AT&T offers a coupon with a barcode for loyal customers to pick up a free 3G microcell from their local AT&T store. AT&T has not officially announced this offer. The 3G microcells($199.99) went on sale from AT&T last year and are mainly popular for those living in low coverage areas. The microcell works like a signal extender boosting your broadband connection by actually creating a new 3G signal using your broadband connection. A few caveats to the deal are that in o...

Verizon iPhone 4 pre-orders set new first-day record in just two hours

By SlashGear, published 02-04-2011

Verizon has announced record sales of the CDMA iPhone 4 yesterday, describing it as the carrier’s most successful first day sales in history. While actual numbers of handsets pre-ordered are in short supply, CEO Dan Mead did say that “in just our first two hours, we had already sold more phones than any first day launch in our history.” Despite complaints from some would-be shoppers about the stability of Verizon’s website, Mead claims that “unprecedented customer orders” were placed online with them. Sales began at 3am and by 5am had already exceeded Verizon’s previous first-day records. Pre-orders are now closed and the next round isn’t expected until February 9. Until then, you can console yourself with our full Verizon iPhone 4 review. ...

By TechRadar, published 02-04-2011

O2 has revealed its plans to launch a mobile wallet service using NFC technology in the second half of 2011.The network operator has trailed NFC payment services using a Nokia handset, but no doubt hopes to take advantage of the NFC capabilities of the latest Android smartphones like the Google Nexus S, as well as its rumoured inclusion of a chip in the iPhone 5. London 2012O2 has said that it will apply for an e-money operating licence from the FSA, which will allow the network to offer money transfers between customers, as well as contactless payments at 60,000 venues around the UK. The e-money operating licence will allow uses to 'bank' money with the network, which can then be spent or transferred using the NFC chip. The network operator is keen to get the mobile payments service up an...

Verizon iPhone 4 Review

By SlashGear, published 02-03-2011

If the original iPhone was the most anticipated cellphone of its time, then the Verizon iPhone 4 has to be the most demanded variant since the first launch back in 2007. A launch rumor that managed to overshadow CES 2011 despite Apple having not a square foot of presence there, for many the Verizon iPhone 4 finally promises the network strength to back up the iOS platform’s abilities. Does the CDMA smartphone live up to expectations? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Hardware The Verizon iPhone 4 may be a new model, but outwardly it’s almost identical to the AT&T version announced back in June 2010. That means the same 4.54 x 2.309 x 0.37 inch glass and metal chassis, a slimline slither of premium-feel hardware held together with a band of metal that doub...

The Today Show Talks About New Fangled Contraption Called The “Internet” in 1994

By SlashGear, published 02-02-2011

“That little mark with the “a” and the ring around it.” Those were Bryan Gumbel’s words as he tried to figure out the “@” symbol in e-mail addresses in 1994. His co-anchor Katie Couric, sporting an awesome 90’s hair style, thought it meant “around or about”. There is a video clip of the Today Show from 1994 discussing the hot topic called the “internet”. Its pretty funny looking back at how clueless most people were as to what the internet was, especially because the internet has become such an integral part of people’s lives today. Imagine not having the internet for a whole week. While it’s funny to look back and see them call the internet “computer billboard” and not reading the “dot” in e-mail addresses, the clip really shows what most people knew...

Yahoo responds to Windows Phone 7 data leak

By TechRadar, published 02-02-2011

Yahoo has released a statement in response to Microsoft's announcement that the Windows Phone 7 3G data leak issue is linked to Yahoo Mail accounts.Microsoft revealed that the mail account was the culprit, while simultaneously confirming that a fix is on its way. Predictably, Yahoo is not too happy about being fingered for the job and has pointed out that the issue prevails only on Microsoft's mobile platform. Windows-specificThe statement reads, "Yahoo! Mail is widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, including those running on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, and RIM. "The issue on the Windows phones is specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail and does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. "Yahoo! has offered to provide Microsoft a...

In Depth: iOS vs Android vs WebOS vs MeeGo

By TechRadar, published 02-02-2011

Pitting iOS vs Android vs WebOS vs MeeGo doesn't seem like a fair fight. It's akin to putting a couple of our TechRadar writers in a boxing ring with the Klitschko brothers. With Apple's iPhone/iPod/iPad OS, Google's Android, plus the Symbian, Microsoft and Blackberry platforms, do we really need any more pretenders to the mobile OS throne?Yes - because 'competition drives innovation' (or so the saying goes). Android improvements will make iOS better and vice-versa. While lower-league operating systems will have to work harder to stand out, they'll help to ensure that the big two don't get complacent. And yes again - because beyond the smartphone battleground, the next big tech confrontation is about to be fought on tablet devices. It's not just a straight iPad vs Android face-off, either....

Early View: Motorola Xoom vs iPad vs PlayBook

By TechRadar, published 28-01-2011

When the Motorola Xoom and BlackBerry PlayBook hit the market, we'll have two serious challengers to the iPad.And, perhaps most interestingly, all three will be running different operating systems. So let's compare how the two newcomers stack up against the hottest tablet yet released. In terms of releases, Motorola won't say anything about the Xoom's UK release date, though it is pencilled in for the first quarter of 2011 in the US. However, it depends on when Google is planning on getting Honeycomb out the door.iPad 2 rumours: what you need to knowLikewise we should be seeing the PlayBook arrive in the Spring or early Summer. And, of course, around that time we'll also be expecting iPad 2, so we'll be updating this piece when we know more about that new device. OSThis is the biggest diffe...

In Depth: 10 mobile phones that changed the world

By TechRadar, published 26-01-2011

You can trace the history of the newest smartphones right back to the early 1990s, where cutting edge technology was a two-line LCD and phones weighed as much as a pack of beef mince.Since then, several phones have changed the world, introducing new technologies or new approaches that have altered the path of mobile communications. But which ones stand out? Here are 10 handsets that we think deserve their place in history. Maybe you owned one of them? Nokia 1011 (1992)Perhaps surprisingly, we're not kicking off this list by lugging out the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, the 1980's cellular briquette that's acknowledged to be the first truly 'mobile' phone. But we do give it a warm, appreciative hug in our article Five phones we'll never forget.Instead, we tip our TechRadar cap to the half-forgott...

Pixelmator App makes $ 1 million in just twenty days

By SlashGear, published 25-01-2011

The Pixelmator app is about to give Apple’s App store all types of good press.  The image editing application has been on sale only twenty days and has already surpassed the million dollar mark. The bulk of the sales was at a discount of $29.99, a discount from the original price of $59.  Pixelmator co-founder Aidas Dailide said that he is happy to pay Apple the 30% cut of it’s sales that is mandatory of all App Store vendors.  “The 30 percent cut is definitely worth it, “ Dailide says, “The increase in sales and exposure is worth more than that. Especially in our case.” The co-founder was mum on how large was the sales increase prior to being available on the App Store, but indicated that “the jump in sales was dramatic.”  Dailide’s loud proclamation of happily acc...

Apple Closing In On 10 Billion Apps Downloaded

By GameInformer, published 21-01-2011

The official iTunes site has a live counter ticking away the downloads as Apple approaches the landmark number. Why do you care? Check the image above.I want the $10,000 gift card Apple is giving away to the ten-billionth app downloader as much as anyone. Too bad Apple's OS updates have crippled my iPhone 3G to the point that it takes twenty seconds to open my Twitter client, much less actually download anything.Still, that's a gigantic number of apps served through the App Store. Whatever you think about Apple or the iPhone, it has changed things forever.

Video: iOS 4.3 multi-touch gestures demoed

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

Apple has granted developers an extra little treat in the iOS 4.3 betas – a preview of multi-touch gestures. With the release of the second iOS 4.3 beta to developers yesterday, Apple said that the multi-touch gesture input won't be coming to customers when iOS 4.3 is shipped, rather it is "providing this preview to gather input on how these gestures work with your apps". Still, it's a pretty safe bet that we'll see the gestural input method make its way to our iOS screens at some point in the future (on the button-less generation, perhaps?). Cool but clumsyAntoni Nygaard has helpfully recorded a video showing off how the gestures work for multitasking. While four-fingered swipes to scroll through applications instead of having to bring up the dock are kind of cool, the do look a little ...

Updated: iPad 2 rumours: what you need to know

By TechRadar, published 20-01-2011

The internet loves Apple and it loves ill-founded speculation, so it's hardly surprising that iPad 2 rumours were flying before the first iPad even reached the UK. With only weeks to go before its expected unveiling the iPad 2 release date, specs and price are still closely guarded secrets, but that doesn't mean there aren't some juicy rumours, inspired guesses and possibly even Apple leaks to consider. Reports suggest Apple is also expecting massive demand for the new device and has ordered six million units per month. Here's our pick of the latest iPad 2 rumours.iPad 2 specs: cameras and a gyroscopeGizmodo reckons that FaceTime support's a given, and that means a front-facing camera like the iPhone 4. Updated: HTC Tablet rumours: what you need to know
