Apple is having a changing of heart about attaching the 4G moniker to its third generation iPad tablet. In truth, 4G LTE service on the iPad only really works in the U.S. and Canada via a handful of carriers (five, to be exact), and it didn't sit well with some remote locales that Apple was labeling compatible devices as "Wi-Fi + 4G." Amid...

Apple released iOS 5.1.1 today for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It is just a minor update that focuses on bug fixing rather than adding any new features. The following is the official changelog for the new update. As you can tell from the screenshot above, the update was also released as an OTA download for devices running iOS 5 and above and weighs in at just 54MB. If you have an...

This week, we’ve examined the major gaming platforms and recommended the essential titles for each one. Today, we wrap it up with the best games for iOS and Android devices. Whether your allegiance is with Apple or Google, both platforms offer thousands of games. It’s definitely true that iOS is the lead platform for the majority of mobile game releases, but that doesn’t mean Android users are being ignored. Many of the top-tier games find their way onto Android devices, even though those ports may come months after their initial iOS release. For our list, we tried to compile a mix of well-known titles and a few relative obscurities. There’s a reason that many of these games are household names, and there are still more that deserve a larger audience. Take a look a...

Apple is now estimating five to seven business days for online orders of the new iPad to process and ship in the U.S., whereas previously the wait time was pegged at two to three weeks and, more recently, one to two weeks. In the current issue of Game Informer, we published an interview with Robot Entertainment's Patrick Hudson. The company, formed by ex-Ensemble veterans has left Age of Empires behind in favor of innovative downloadable and mobile games like Orcs Must Die and Hero Academy. Unfortunately, there just wasn't space to print the entire interview in the magazine. Here are the questions that were cut from the print version. Why was the Halo MMO you'd Ensemble had been working on for Microsoft cancelled? Too big, too expensive. There was obviously a lot of turmoil within Microsoft at that time, it wasn’t long after that when Bungie spun itself out of Microsoft and what was going to become of the Halo universe within Microsoft was unknown. It was a big production, it would have be...

Apple may be looking to solve some touch control complaints with a new controller. A rumor mentioned in an iPad 3 review from Anandtech.com hints one could be coming. "I know of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to market, but whether or not it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen," the article said. Companies such as Apple prototype lots of things that consumers never end up seeing, so this rumor shouldn't come as a complete surprise. A wireless controller could help ease the troubles some people with a touch-only device, though. For now we'll have to wait and see how this one plays out. [Source: Anandtech]

This opinion piece from Liquid Advertising media director Kevin Joyce first appeared in Game Informer issue 228. Joyce is a advertising expert whose company has handled dozens of video game clients on different platforms. Given the relative lack of exposure and limited marketing budgets to raise awareness about apps, rankings play an incredibly outsized role in obtaining visibility. A top spot in the rankings can make or break your game. The dynamic is self-perpetuating: Once you’re there, more people see your app while browsing the store, which leads to more sales. If you’re not in the top 25, it’s incredibly difficult to crack it. Most people perusing the app rankings assume that they are as fair a reflection of a game’s popularity as weekly movie box office numb...

As a lead designer at 5th Cell, Matt Cox helped create one of the most talked-about DS titles of the last several years. After Scribblenauts' success, however, Cox left the developer to move back to his hometown and focus on non-profit opportunities. After spending some time away from the gaming scene, he started up Fourfire, a small team that is releasing their first iOS title today. Sticky Bees is now available on the App Store, and Cox says it's a mash-up of classic concepts. Playing as the King Bee, you're tasked with collecting a chain of followers and keeping them safe behind you. While the King can destroy enemies, his combo-increasing followers can be destroyed by enemy bugs. "I wanted the satisfaction of smashing through tons of enemies at will, but with the simp...

However, the Digitimes' report on the iPad 3 is not groundbreaking, considering Apple's traditional product launch cycle. Samsung has apparently gotten all its legal ducks in a row and has fired back at the recent court ruling that banned the Galaxy Tab 10.1 from sale in the land down under. At first glance, the Seagate GoFlex Satellite appears to be a standard GoFlex external hard drive, although there are hints that not all is what it seems. For a start, this is a far larger and bulkier product than Seagate's ultra-thin GoFlex Slim drive. The 'Satellite' part of the name is another hint that this drive is something different, since even though it comes with a USB 3.0 connection, its main function is to provide tablets and smartphones with additional, wireless, storage. If you're frustrated by your iPad's 16GB of space, then the Seagate GoFlex Satellite is designed to boost the capacity to 500GB.This is great in theory, but when tested, getting the drive to work flawlessly with iPads and iTunes was a complicated process, involving having to authorise accounts, download apps a...

The Amazon App Store for Android version 2.0 has rolled out in preparation for the US launch of the Kindle Fire. With the Amazon Kindle Fire rolling out for the US market on 15 November, Amazon knows that its app strategy is a central pillar to supporting its new venture. Version 2.0 of the Amazon App Store brings in a subscriptions item in the main app menu, and overhauls the look and feel to make it more similar to the Kindle Fire's interface.ImpactObviously it will be a few days before the true impact of the changes is made clear, with the launch date likely to bring a wealth of new content for the store. Overview The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is one of the best tablets yet released.Taking a lesson from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and adding a few features beyond what the Apple iPad 2 offers, this thin, light and longer-lasting tablet is the best option around if you're more interested in portability than in playing games and watching movies on a 10-inch screen. The slightly smaller size is also a better fit for reading books, browsing the web and checking email. Some might wonder why this model even exists. After all, there's a slew of 7-inch tablets available, including the Acer Iconia Tab A100, the BlackBerry PlayBook and even the Cisco Cius, which is coming to the UK. At its 8.9-inch size, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 fits somewhere between those 'too small for movies' 7-inch tabs and the larg...

(This was written before Steve Jobs died, and it was never intended to be disrespectful, only slyly satirical. Because of publishing schedules, it is only appearing now. I admired Jobs and I will sincerely miss his presence in the consumer electronics industry. His influence went far beyond his own company. He was a human catalyst accelerating the pace of computer evolution to warp speed.) 1984 was and still is a year forever tainted by George Orwell’s novel of the same name. Ah, the pleasures of youth. Sunshine, summer breaks and cool Capri Suns by the poolside. It sounds like the good life, but apparently all the rays are baking kids’ brains: a new report says that the majority of American youth would prefer a Mac to a PC. What has the world come to when children are actively seeking out fruit? The 2012 Harris Poll Youth EquiTrend study polled kids ranging from 8 to 24, and found that for the most part, they liked the kinds of things you’d expect youngsters to like: Oreos, Nickelodeon, Sprite, the Nintendo Wii and so on. But the shocking bit came in the technology portion: Apple laid a clean sweep across the category, placing tops with the iPad, iPhone and Mac line of computers. The thin frame holds a 3.2-inch AMOLED ClearBlack touchscreen, 5MP and VGA cameras, an external speaker hugging the bottom curve, and all this in only a 92g, 9.7mm-thick phone. The Earth isn't flat (Flat Eath Society begs to differ), and neither are tablet or eReader shipments. On the contrary, these devices are flying off the shelves all around the globe. The folks over at International Data Corporation (IDC) did some number crunching and determined that media tablet shipments jumped nearly 89 percent on a sequential basis, and a mind boggling 303.8 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2011. "Media tablet shipments grew at a solid pace in the second quarter, led by continued strong demand for Apple products," said Tom Mainelli, research director, Mobile Connected Devices. "We expect shipment totals to continue to grow in the third and fourt quarter, as additional vendors introduce more price-competitive Android products into the market and Apple works...

Windows 8 vs Windows 7 vs OS X LionMicrosoft's Windows 8 is going to be a very big deal. The new OS has a brand new interface, new processor support, massively improved touch features and a host of interesting new things, and it's quite dramatically different from the Windows 7 we know and love. It's also very different from Apple's OS X Lion, which introduced massively improved touch features and a host of interesting new things. So which one are you likely to prefer - Apple's OS, or Microsoft's? Would you be better off sticking with Windows 7? Let's find out.Windows 8 vs Windows 7 vs OS X Lion: hardwareThese days OS X is a 64-bit Intel-only affair, while Windows 7 requires 32-bit or 64-bit Intel or AMD processors. It's been an interesting week for tech news. First, Microsoft took the wraps off Windows 8; then, Intel announced that Google would be optimising Android for its mobile processors and talked about its next generation Haswell and Broadwell CPUs.Or to put it another way... fight! It's impossible to look at Microsoft and Intel's announcements without thinking of two companies beginning with A: Apple and ARM. Apple is a huge threat to Microsoft - it effectively owns the tablet market as well as the luxury PC market, and its talk of the post-PC era isn't something Microsoft wants to hear - and ARM is a threat to Intel. ARM-based chips power all kinds of tablets, including Apple ones, and could end up powering Apple's computers too.To take on the A-firms, it seems, Microsoft and Intel are bringin...

Post PC my butt. I've been meaning to write about this for some time, but a few weeks ago Robert W. Baird analysts published the results of a survey that said tablets are not cannibalizing the PC as quickly as most pundits have said they would. In fact, 83 percent of those surveyed said they would still buy a PC. Of the 17 percent who said they could live without a PC, 11 percent said they didn't see that happening today and that "maybe" they could live without a PC in the future. So, in reality, of the 1,114 people surveyed by Baird, 6 percent said they could live without a PC today. (To be fair, that 17 percent also said they had no plans to buy a new PC, so I imagine the 11 percent would continue to use their desktop or notebook.) Mac OS X 10.8 wish listWe're not sure what the OS X 10.8 release date will be (if recent patterns continue, summer 2013 looks probable), nor even what OS X 10.8 will be called. For that matter, Apple might not release OS X 10.8 at all, instead jumping to OS X 11.0 or even merging its Mac and iOS device strategies into a big sticky digital goo ball called iOS 6 - 'the mergening'.Regardless, now OS X Lion has been out for an entire month, it's time to start mulling over what we'd like to see in its successor. If we miss anything, let us know in the comments.1. Some colourMaybe Apple's designers were watching a lot of classic movies when working on OS X Lion, because it's very grey. Toolbar icons, sidebar icons, windows, scrollbars… all grey. Stylish? Perhaps. A step back in usability for an...

Microsoft's been pushing tablet computers for the best part of a decade, so you can imagine how happy the iPad's success makes them. But Microsoft doesn't give up easily, and Windows 8 tablets will emerge. So what's Steve Ballmer going to be shouting about when he shows them off?Windows 8 tablets will have a new touch interfaceAs we saw from the recent Windows 8 preview, Windows 8 tablets will have a marvellous new interface that looks rather like Windows Phone 7. "Fast, fluid and dynamic, the experience has been transformed while keeping the power, flexibility and connectivity of Windows intact," says Microsoft's head of Windows Experience Julie Larson-Green. "Although the new user interface is designed and optimized for touch, it works equally well with a mouse and keyboard. ...

A recent report by a major market research firm, Forrester Research, speculates that Amazon may just have a chance of undercutting Apple in the tablet market. A bold claim, one that rests on many assumptions – including the fact the Amazon is actually in the process of developing a tablet, after all, it has never been announced officially. The analyst’s report goes on to speculate that if Amazon priced the tablet at less than $300, it will be able to sell nearly 5 million tablets in [...] Read the entire article

After the huge disappointment the HTC Flyer was, we were kind of hoping that the Motorola Xoom would at least keep the Android challenge to the Apple iPad alive, something that hasn’t gone too well for the Google-developed OS. Look & Feel It is really a case of two extremes here. The solid and classy build as well as different looks are combined in what is (and there is really no other way of putting this) in a slightly bulky form factor. To put this in perspective, the Xoom has a th [...] Read the entire article

Looking for the new iPhone app everybody will be playing a month from now? Prefer to get in on the ground floor? Contre Jour just hit the iTunes store yesterday, and it's definitely worth a look. Like most Chillingo-published games, Contre Jour (roughly: Against the Day) offers a simple concept, with simple touch-screen controls. Unlike many Chillingo games, Contre Jour eschews the bright colors, chipper music, and familiar creatures/situations for a much more surprising and unique vision. In Contre Jour, you play Petit, an unusual creature that looks like an eye with a little tail. Petit can't move around much on his own, but his round shape makes him ideal for pushing around. As the player, you move Petit primarily by adjusting the topography of the ground around him -- pulling u...

The news of Steve Jobs' resignation from Apple's CEO spot late yesterday was a possibility we've seen coming for years, given Jobs' apparent ongoing health issues. Still, it was a bit of a shock because Apple and Jobs are both at the zenith of their success. I found myself reflecting last night on all of the ways Jobs influenced the world around us, and a host of quick-reaction stories posted at the Wall Street Journal were a helpful guide.Of course, Walt Mossberg wrote an admiring overview of Jobs' accomplishments that will take you down memory lane, from the Apple II through the iPad. Although Jobs' career can be summed up largely with reference to three different companies—Apple, NeXT, and Pixar—his ...Read more...

There will be thousands of words written in praise of Steve Jobs in the coming days; from co-founding Apple in his garage to his triumphant return to the company and its subsequent upturn. But, to me, the most vital thing that Steve Jobs brought to the technology world was the ability to say no. Perfectionists are ten a penny, but perfectionists who have risen to the top of successful companies are much harder to find. The luxury of being uncompromising is often the first thing to evaporate when commercial pressures are brought to bear. By keeping to his vision, Jobs earned himself a rare untouchable quality in the tech world, but also within Apple. That meant that any project within the company could be sent back to the drawing board or even skewered by Jobs, however late in the design pr...

Speaker docks for Apple's iPad aren't quite as prevalent as those for the iPhone and iPod, in no small part due the size of unit needed to hold the larger tablet device.Increasingly, though, the big names are starting to offer solutions. Altec Lansing, Philips, JBL and others have got in on the act, and so has Logitech. In fact, Logitech has really jumped aboard the iPad bandwagon, offering accessories such as the excellent Tablet Keyboard for iPad.This speaker dock doesn't really bother with fancy features – it's not battery powered, and there's no AirPlay or other wireless audio – but just focuses on holding your iPad sturdily, charging it and playing music. The base is quite large, but we've no complaints about that. It means the whole unit is stable, and offers lots of space for spe...

We're going to miss Steve Jobs as Apple's CEO - not just because of his talent, but because of his talent for making tech interesting. Just when things start to get dull, Jobs pops up with a new device, a new philosophy or a new feud - and the tech industry will be all the poorer without him. These are some of our favourite Jobs moments from the last 14 years. 1. "Tell me what's wrong with this place"After more than a decade away from the firm he founded, Jobs returned to Apple in 1997. It was the beginning of one of the most incredible chapters the technology industry's ever seen. On his first day back, Businessweek reports, he asked executives to tell him what was wrong with the stricken Apple. "After some mumbled replies, he jumped in: 'It's the products!'"2. "Thoughts on music"Jobs has...

CEO says he can "no longer meet my duties and expectations" but will remain on as chairman of the board; Tim Cook named as replacement. Hewlett Packard isn't the only major PC maker facing an uncertain future. Acer today reported worse than expected second quarter results, and there's plenty of reason for despair. For starters, consolidated revenue was down 32 percent year-over-year for the quarter at $3.5 billion with an operating loss of $246 million. More cause for concern, however, is that this is the first time Acer has ever posted a quarterly loss. Tough times have fallen on Acer ever since it parted ways with former CEO Gianfranco Lanci, though the slide started before he left. Lanci jumped ship after the board of directors essentially pushed him overboard as they wanted to steer Acer's ship more towards mobile waters. But Apple's hugely popular iPad has been a double whammy, eating up much of the mobile market shar...

The Windows 8 picture is becoming clearer. Following on from the slides allegedly leaked in June 2010 by a software engineer at HP, Microsoft has outed far more details about the interface design. Microsoft says Windows 8 is a reimagining of Windows, "from the chip to the interface" and has launched an Engineering Windows 8 blog. The corporation has promised that a pre-release Windows 8 build will be available to the public. Microsoft says that "a Windows 8-based PC is really a new kind of device, one that scales from touch-only small screens through to large screens, with or without a keyboard and mouse." Opinion: Windows 8 could make you rethink buying iPad 3Indeed, the new OS appears to have two completely separate interfaces - one, a traditional (and, on the surface of it, unchanged) W...

When the news broke about cut-price UK TouchPads yesterday afternoon, I came up with a cunning plan for people who hadn't already clambered aboard the tablet bandwagon: buy an HP TouchPad just now, and then get an iPad 3 or Android 4 tablet next year.I wasn't being sarky. At £400ish, TouchPads are a tough sell. At £90, they're a steal. Sure, they're not as nice as iPad 2s, and they don't have as many apps, and the reviews haven't been so good. But at £89, there's no competition: you can't even buy an Android-powered Etch-A-Sketch for that kind of money. Even ASDA's Arnova is a tenner more, while offering considerably less. This morning, PC World's online shop summed it up. Sorry, it said. We're out of TouchPads. Is Sharp's star on the rise?
