iPad mini 4G Review

One of the takeaways from our iPad mini review was quite how travel-friendly the smaller tablet proved to be in comparison to the full-sized version. The 9.7-inch iPad has grown progressively slimmer across its generations, but the 7.9-inch form factor has bag-friendly advantages in its narrower width and shorter length. The fact that it's so easily used one-handed makes it a more direct alternative to a Kindle or NOOK for ebook reading, too. While the WiFi-only model's design begged to be included in your bag or purse, the 4G version finally has the flexibility to match. We've thoroughly reviewed the iPad mini in its WiFi-only form, so we won't re-tread old ground. Suffice to say, embedded cellular data makes far more sense on a smaller tablet; all too often the 10-inch-scale slates end up only being used around the home or office. Being able to get online, check email, use navigation apps, and stream media without worrying about if there's a WiFi hotspot nearby really does step up the usefulness of the iPad mini. The obvious omissions of the WiFi-only model remain, chief among them being the absence of a Retina display.

Apple iPad mini Wi-Fi + Cellular Review

If there's one tablet that's tailor made for built-in 4G, it's the iPad mini. This tablet is lighter and thinner than most 7-inch budget slates, yet packs a larger 7.9-inch screen for enjoying all of your apps, not to mention a full web experience, on the go. If you're willing to sign a two-year contract, the iPad mini starts as low as $359 on AT&T, which is just $30 more than the Wi-Fi only version. But that doesn't include the cost of monthly data. Those looking for month-to-month flexibility will pay $459 for the tablet. Read on to find out just how much tablet you get for your money.Editor's Note: Portions of this review are taken from ouriPad mini Wi-Fi review.Click to EnlargeWith the exception of a black band running across the top back of the iPad mini (to accommodate a 4G antenna), this tablet looks identical to the Wi-Fi-only version. And that's a very good thing, because this device still packs a larger, 7.9-inch display than the cheaper, 7-inch competition, all inside a sleeker design. The Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad mini measures the same 0.28 inches thin as the Wi-Fi-only model. By comparison, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD (0.4 inches), Google Nexus 7 (0.4 inches) and Barnes & Noble Nook HD (0.43 inches) are all chunkier.

iPad mini review

Apple has gone where we never thought it would, with the iPad mini bringing the Apple tablet experience to a brave new budget world. The new tablet comes in at a wallet-friendly 279 for the basic version, with 16GB of storage on offer for the Wi-Fi version. You can supplement the mini-slate with up to 64GB of space to chuck movies and music, as well as 4G LTE connectivity, but that will set you back an eye-watering 529 for the top model. But then again, the iPad mini release isn't about the top end specs with a whopping price tag – it's about beating the likes of the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD in the budget stakes. The two competitors have been getting many column inches so far thanks to the super cheap prices and the impressive specs on board – although with both only offering a 7-inch screen compared to Apple's 7.9-inch offering, the Cupertino board is confident its device will win the day when it comes to capturing consumers' hearts. However, the more frugal shopper, and especially one buying for a loved one, may not agree with this idea, as the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD costs around 40% less and when faced with a choice between the three might opt for the familiar Amazon brand or the sheer power of the Nexus 7, with its mightily impressive spec list and legions of Google apps.

Apple iPad Mini Review

Apple managed to hold out for two years before deciding to enter the market for tablets under 8" in size. Faced with a groundswell of competition from Google and Amazon with the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD, Apple's much-rumoured iPad Mini has finally seen the light of day. At first glance, it looks essentially like a pint-sized iPad 2 loaded with Apples' latest mobile operating system, iOS 6. The iPad Mini is neither a 7" nor an 8" tablet, straddling the divide and setting itself apart from other small-format tablets with a 7.9" 4:3 display. Set into a screen bezel whose vertical edges have been whittled right down to the minimum, the Apple iPad Mini has been fitted with an IPS screen panel with 1024 x 768 pixels. It runs on a 1 GHz dual-core Apple A5 processor, the Power VR SGX543MP2 graphics chip and 512 MB of RAM. It's available with 16, 32 or 64 GB of memory. There's a 5-Megapixel photo and video (1080p) camera on the back of the tablet, as well as a 2-Megapixel front-facing webcam. Connectivity is catered for with Wi-Fi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0. This being Apple, the only main connector—apart from the 3.5 mm audio jack—is a proprietary port. This is the same Lightning connector as seen in the iPhone 5 and the iPad 4, and is smaller than the 30-pin connector used in the firm's older-generation products.

Apple Mac Mini with Fusion Drive review

The new Apple Mac Mini, updated with Intel's third-generation Core CPUs and a new Fusion hybrid hard-drive option, brings improved value and welcome speediness to the most affordable Mac. The Core i7 chip and 1TB standard hard drive in our review model are both useful upgrades over the previous-generation Mac Mini, and the $250 Fusion drive, while turning our $799 review unit into a $1,049 purchase, offers a mostly noticeable performance improvement. The Fusion option puts the Mac Mini outside its familiar sub-$1,000 territory, making it either an indulgence, or an appropriate upgrade for those with serious storage needs. Without the drive, the stock $799 model offers a newly invigorated Mac Mini that finally gives Apple a serious competitor to Windows PCs in the same sub-$1,000 price range. No visual element of the new Mac Mini has changed from the 2011 model, which itself was almost identical to the 2010 version. The only real difference on the outside of the new Mac Mini is that it now has four USB 3.0 ports where the previous version used USB 2.0. Perhaps more interesting than the USB upgrade, Apple has preserved the FireWire 800 port and separate audio-out and audio-in jacks on the new Mac Mini.

Apple iPad mini review: One for the road

Wait, did hell just freeze over? Maybe a couple of degrees cooler? Rumors of a mini version of the iPad had been laughed at, dodged and denied - not necessarily in that order and often all at once. But here it is - the iPad mini is finally a reality. It caused due measures of excitement and perhaps a bit of disappointment. Yet, in typical Apple fashion, it's an excellent piece of hardware. In short, it's a polarizing device that may as well be the next best-selling tablet. You have to hand it to Apple's R&D team - they know how to design hardware. The iPad mini is super thin and light, with a cool aluminum shell. Sure, they swore they'd never make a 7" tablet and the truth is they still haven't - the 7.9" screen of the mini offers 36% more real estate than the screens of the Google Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Less bezel on the left and right of the screen combined with the ~310g of weight make it reasonably comfortable to hold with one hand. Apple did make some compromises, which drew a lot of ire.

Apple iPad Mini Review

We examine the iPad mini, Apple's first attempt at creating a smaller iPad to compete with the likes of the Kindle Fire and Nexus 7. Does it have the chops to justify its higher price, though?Let's face it: Right now, the iPad is synonymous with “tablet.” There are dozens of other Android and Windows 8 tablets on the market, but by and large, when people think about a tablet or desire a tablet, what they really want is an iPad. And if they don't want an iPad, they want something just like it, but without an Apple logo. At $500, the iPad created and has dominated the touch tablet market for more than two years. Until now, Apple has shown zero interest in creating a smaller tablet, going so far as to ridicule them publicly when the first Galaxy Tab hit shelves. However, with 7-inch tablets like the Nook Tablet, Kindle Fire, and Nexus 7 taking off at lower and lower prices, Apple was left out in the cold on a hot segment. Enter the iPad mini. It costs more than the competition, but it's larger too. Is it worth your time? Read on to find out. Apple made a smart decision choosing a 7.9-inch screen, which makes the iPad mini noticeably more portable than the full-size, 9.7-inch iPad.

Apple iPad mini (Wi-Fi)

How much are apps worth to you? How about $120? If you want those iPad-exclusive apps and price is no object, then no other small-screen tablet will do. Beautifully made, slim, and light, the iPad mini ($329/16GB, $429/32GB, $529/64GB direct) packs precisely the power of an iPad 2 into a tablet you'll actually want to carry around. Aside from the apps, though, the iPad mini isn't the best small tablet. Compared with the current $200 tablet crop that includes the Google Nexus 7 , the Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and the Barnes & Noble Nook HD, it's a little too wide, its screen isn't the best you'll find, and it's quite a bit too expensive. Nowadays, Android apps are good enough to keep the excellent Nexus 7 our Editors' Choice for small tablets. Design and Physical FeaturesAt 7.87 by 5.30 by .28 inches (HWD), the mini is the slimmest tablet I've ever tested, and at 10.9 ounces, it's an ounce lighter than the Nexus 7. The front is a glass screen surrounded by a very narrow black or white bezel, with Apple's signature Home button below it. As always, Apple's Volume controls, Home button, and Mute/Screen Lock Rotation switch are perfectly placed and easy to find.

Apple iPad mini Review

Sure, the iPad mini ostensibly competes head-to-head with 7-inch bargain Android tablets, but this isn't some cheapo iPad Lite. You can access all of Apple's 275,000-plus apps -- from Flipboard and Facebook to "Real Racing 2" -- on a premium aluminum device that fits in one hand. The $329 iPad mini also delivers dual cameras and a bigger screen than those budget slates. Then again, a $130 premium is nothing to sneeze at, and the mini costs just $70 less than an iPad 2. Is the mini worth its maxi price tag?Click to EnlargeThere are two very striking things about the iPad mini's design. One is that the device packs a larger 7.9-inch display than the 7-inch competition inside a sleeker design. The mini measures 0.3 inches thin, and weighs only 0.7 pounds. The Kindle Fire (0.4 inches and 0.9 pounds) and the Nexus 7 (0.4 inches and 0.8 pounds) are both chunkier and heftier. The second thing that really stands out is just how much screen there is in such a compact frame; it practically goes from edge to edge. Even though the bezel is very narrow, Apple figured out a way to make sure your thumbs don't unintentionally open apps or click links when you're just holding the device.

Apple iPad mini Review

Broadening its depth, it surely took Apple a long time to steer into new territory with its much-vaunted iPhone, but nevertheless, they introduced the world an unfamiliar iPhone with a larger 4-inch display. Strangely enough, they're doing the same thing now with the iPad, as the aptly named iPad mini is set to appease those who have a flare for compact tablets that are easier to travel around with. And to tell you the truth, the timing couldn't have come any sooner, seeing that we've been witnessing such fierce competition in the sub 8-inch category.By now, we're fairly familiar with what entails the iPad mini, but upon looking at its $330 starting price point, it's still somewhat rather difficult to swallow after quickly peeking at its specs sheet. Still, beauty as we all know is more than simply skin deep – so let's explore everything and see if there's something more grand beneath it all. One quick look at its name justifies what you can expect with the design of the iPad mini. See that word attached to iPad? You guessed it folks, this baby is merely a shrunken down or “mini” version of Apple's popular 9.7-inch tablet. Although there's nothing fresh with the design of the iPad mini, there are a couple of noticeable differences – like how it employs the same chamfered beveled edge of the iPhone 5 around its trim.

iPad mini review

The iPad mini has arrived — and so has our review. Just last week, Apple introduced the world to the newest member of its wildly successful tablet line, an adorable, diminutive slate with a 7.9-inch display. It even had an adorable ad to show along with it: an iPad mini joining in with a full-sized iPad to play "Heart and Soul" on the piano. But to think of the iPad mini as a companion to the 3rd or 4th generation iPad — some kind of secondary player to the bigger version — would probably be a mistake. With a price tag starting at $329 and heading all the way up to $659 (with LTE and 64GB of storage), this isn't really a step down from the existing iPad (well, the iPad 2 at least) as much as it is a step to the side. At least, that's the impression I get. Want a big iPad that isn't too expensive? Get the 2nd gen one. Want one that you can throw in a bag or keep on the nightstand? Get the iPad mini. You fly business class and work in photography? Let me point you in the direction of the new 4th generation model. But regardless of market positioning, the iPad mini has to be viewed in a world with a $199 Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD — two strong performers that are a far cry, at least in price, from the iPad mini.

Apple iPad mini review

The latest addition to Apple's iPad lineup is the iPad mini. With its 7.9-inch display and slim design, it's spectacular at being portable and is discrete enough to hold in one hand -- but it's marred by a lack of retina display. Its high price, in comparison to the similarly sized Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD (both £159), is also a major problem. The iPad mini starts at £269 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model and is due to go on sale from 2 November.Whether or not you think it's too pricey, the iPad mini feels genuinely luxurious to hold. Its 7.9-inch front is dominated by a single piece of glass with the small, round home button sitting at the bottom. At 15mm wider than the Google Nexus 7, it's going to stretch your coat pocket to tearing point. It measures 200mm long and 135mm wide. That's exactly the same length as the Nexus 7, but adds 15mm onto the width. We found we were just about able to slide the Nexus 7 into our jacket pockets, but we're not convinced you'll be able to do the same with the iPad mini -- it's more of a purse or small bag-sized device.

iPad Mini review: The perfect size, but at a price

The tablet landscape, at the smaller-screened end, has become about pricing. Or so it seems. Don't tell that to the iPad Mini. Apple's long-awaited, and finally real, tinier tablet is remarkably thinner and lighter than its big-boned newly arrived fourth-gen iPad sibling, but it also starts at $329, a price that's well above the bargain-basement $199 target floated by devices like the Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and Nook HD. Certainly, the tablet playing field -- especially when it comes to media -- is leveling. The Kindle's book, video, and app ecosystem is impressive in its own right. The Nook has made gains with its apps and services. Android has Google Play. Regardless, none of these can truly compare to the breadth of content from Apple's App Store and iTunes. The App Store is Apple's great gold mine, and the iPad Mini's price seems to be banking on you knowing that. And, in that sense, the iPad Mini may be worth its price. But, the original iPad hit a sweet-spot $499 price that few competitors could match. The Mini's price is about $130 higher than many similar 7-inch tablets that undercut it.

iPad mini Review: Apple aims for the everyman

It's an iPad, but smaller. Boiling down the iPad mini to its core premise may not tell you everything you need to know about the 7.9-inch tablet, but it does set the scene: Apple's legendary build quality, iOS and the hundreds of thousands of tablet apps in the App Store, and a guarantee that it's going to polarize consumers. Steve Jobs memorably dismissed smaller tablets, and yet Apple couldn't have been more enthusiastic about its mini model at the launch event last week. Read on to find out whether, for a small slate, the iPad mini is actually a big deal. At first glance, the iPad mini's familial resemblance is obvious. Available in white and black finishes - with matching aluminum rear shells, unlike the full-sized iPad with Retina display, which only changes bezel color - it's considerably reduced in size, down 23-percent in thickness at 0.28-inches deep, and down 53-percent in weight, at 0.68-pounds for the Wi-Fi-only model. It's the width and length which are most notable, however. Held in portrait orientation, the 5.3-inch frame is easy to grip in a single hand, your fingers tucked around the edges without feeling stretched.

Hands on: iPad mini review (Preview)

Getting hands-on with the iPad mini could just as easily be called a "hand-on" since it's so easy to hold one-handed, and tap with the other. The first thing you notice when you pick it up is just how thin and light it is. With a smooth aluminum back, you feel like you could flip it like a coin, or spin it on your palm. It's as thin as a pencil and as light as a legal-size pad of paper - both nearly insignificant feeling objects. You can grip the iPad mini with a couple of fingers on the bottom, or even stretch your hand across the back like you're holding an iPhone 5 or iPod touch. It's 5.3 inches (13.5 centimeters) wide, and feels nicely balanced at 7.87 inches (20cm) high. It's just 0.68 pounds (308 grams), slightly heavier at 0.69 pounds (312 grams) if you opt for the cellular version. We were so tempted to just start flipping it in the air like a pancake, that's how light it feels. This makes it even better as an e-reader than the larger iPad models, since you can hold the iPad mini in one hand for much longer before feeling fatigued. The aluminum back meets the glass front at a super-shiny, diamond-polished chamfer reminiscent of the one on the new iPhone. The white version is stunning, with a matte silver back, and the black version's charcoal aluminum back matches the black iPhone 5 perfectly.

Apple iPad mini (Preview)

The latest addition to Apple's iPad lineup is the iPad mini. With its 7.9-inch display, it's considerably smaller than its big brother, but does it offer enough to take your money instead of Google's brilliant Nexus 7 tablet? The iPad mini starts at £269 for the 16GB Wi-Fi only model and is due to go on sale from November. To look at, the mini is pretty much what you'd expect: a smaller iPad. Its 7.9-inch front is dominated by a single piece of glass with the small, round home button sitting at the bottom. It measures 200mm long and 135mm wide. That's exactly the same length as the Nexus 7, but adds 15mm onto the width. I found I was just about able to slide my Nexus 7 into my jacket pocket, but I'm not convinced I'd be able to do the same with the iPad mini. It has a much slimmer bezel than the Nexus 7 though, so the bigger screen hasn't pushed out the size of the chassis any more than is necessary. It's only 7.2mm thick, which Apple excitedly claimed is "as thin as a pencil". That depends how fat your pencils are. Either way, there's no denying it's a skinny beast. The Nexus 7 is 10mm thick, which seems positively portly by comparison. It also weighs around 310g, making it about half the weight of the iPad 3.
