The Aliph Jawbone Icon HD + the Nerd ($139, direct) are one heck of a pair. The Icon HD is a supremely capable, high quality Bluetooth headset, while the Nerd is a companion USB dongle for instantaneous, wire-free audio on any PC or Mac. For users that want an easy way to connect a headset to both PCs and phones, this is a great choice. But if you can do without the Nerd, you'll getter slightly better sound quality from a couple of other headsets for a similar price. Design and Call PerformanceJust like its predecessors in the Jawbone line, the Icon HD has style to spare. It's the same exact size as the previous Aliph Jawbone Icon ($99, 4 stars), measuring 0.7 by 1.8 by 0.9 inches (HWD) and weighing just 0.3 ounces. The two-paneled, textured front is a rich shade of navy, while the rest of the headset is black. There's a power switch on the back, between the Voice Activity Sensor, which controls the Icon's noise cancellation, and the ear tip. Powering the device on or off is instantaneous, and the location of this switch helps to avoid any accidental power-ups. There's a multi-function Talk button on the back edge of the headset. The HD comes with seven different sets of ear tips, including three that sit in your ear, and four that use an ear hook. There's also an AC charger with a 4.5-inch micro-USB cable.
Jawbone's ICON was our consumer Bluetooth headset pick back in early 2010, but more than 18 months later it's perhaps overdue a refresh. Along, then, comes the replacement, the Jawbone ICON HD and its new Bluetooth dongle accessory, The NERD. It might have a geeky name, but the promise is complete simplicity. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Outwardly, there's little to mark the difference between the 2010 ICON and the new ICON HD. It's the same 44.1 x 18.25 x 25 mm and 8.2g chassis with textured fascia, a springy circular ear grip and a somewhat stubby aesthetic that stands a little further out from the head than we'd prefer, a look that's over-emphasized by the short length. Inside there's Bluetooth 2.1+EDR with multipoint support for pairing with two devices simultaneously along with A2DP to handle stereo sound (albeit in mono). Up to eight device pairings can be stored, and the quoted range is 10m; in reality we managed considerably more before static spoiled play. What has changed is the HD audio support, with a 25-percent larger “wideband” speaker supporting 16kHz. With compatible services - such as Skype, YouTube or Pandora - it delivers crisper, fuller sound.
While Bluetooth headsets are usually paired with mobile phones, many people also use them with their PCs. You can use the headset for VoIP calls, or for listening to music if it supports A2DP audio streaming. Unfortunately, the Bluetooth pairing process for PCs can be cumbersome, especially for those who are not technologically inclined. Jawbone has decided to solve that problem with a headset bundle it calls "Jawbone Icon HD + the Nerd." It's essentially a package that combines an improved version of its Jawbone Icon headset along with a tiny USB audio adapter the company calls the Nerd. After an initial pairing between the headset and the adapter, you should be able to plug the Nerd in to any PC or Mac and be ready to use the headset automatically. We admittedly think the Nerd is kind of a silly name for what is just an audio adapter, but we do think the concept is a good one. Of course, you can also use the Icon HD with any Bluetooth-enabled phone thanks to multipoint connectivity, which is the ability to connect with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. The headset is smart enough to switch between the Nerd and the phone whenever a new call comes in.
