Some phones are all about power; others affordability. Alcatel's One Touch 990 (or OT-990) falls firmly into the latter category, as you'd expect given the company's reputation as a purveyor of budget phones. So the question we're asking here isn't what exciting tech helps this rival Samsung's Galaxy S2, HTC's Sensation, Sony Ericsson's Xperia Arc, or any of the other powerhouses in our 20 best mobile phones list.Rather we're concerned with whether it's money well spent. Especially when the world contains the likes of Orange's budget titan, the San Francisco. If you read our review of it, you'll know we lost our heart to that phone because of its amazing competence given its paltry cost. Other rivals worth bearing in mind are the INQ Cloud Touch, which excels at social networking, and the LG Optimus One, but although they're not much more expensive, your budgetary concerns will clearly hold sway.Speaking of the bank balance, at the time of writing the Alcatel One Touch 990 costs £99.99 on Pay As You Go from the O2 website. Monthly contract options weren't confirmed, but we wouldn't expect them to be too expensive. Also worthy of note is that the phone is exclusive to the O2 network in the UK.
The Alcatel OT-990 is a budget Android phone running version 2.2 of Google's popular operating system. It features a 5-megapixel camera and microSD storage expansion. The OT-990 is exclusively available for £100 from UK network provider O2, on a pay as you go deal. Alcatel’s line of cheap and cheerful budget phones has always managed to stay on the right side of acceptable, and the OT-990 is no exception. For the asking price, it’s a decent enough proposition. The casing is surprisingly well-constructed, and it boasts a capacitive touchscreen as opposed to a cheaper resistive variant. As positive as all this sounds, there’s no escaping the fact that corners have been cut to achieve that £100 price tag. The OT-990’s touchscreen doesn’t respond as well as we’d like. And it’s running the slightly outdated Android 2.2 -- which is a little behind the times when you consider that rivals such as the Orange Monte Carlo and Huawei Blaze are pre-loaded with 2.3.Also, with the recent announcement of the next version of the Android operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich, you can reasonably expect low-cost Android 4.0 handsets to appear early in 2012 -- which will make the OT-990 seem even more archaic. Not so long ago, the OT-990 would have been a highly desirable device, but the game has changed in recent months.
Alcatel has always been known for its budget phones, but now it is heading into Android smartphone territory while still managing to keep its prices down. Introducing the Alcatel OT-990 - its latest release and arguably the best Alcatel handset we have seen to date. When we first saw the OT-990, what we first noticed is that it's the nicest looking Alcatel handset we've ever seen. Sure, it can't compete with the top-of-the-range smartphones, but neither does it feel cheap and plasticky as its predecessors have. In some ways it is reminiscent of the HTC Desire S, thanks to its wide and curvy body. It also comes in a host of colour choices. Key points The OT-990 only features one hard key and that's the Home key at the base of the handset. Above it are three touch-sensitive keys - the Menu, Back and Search keys. On other handsets you might expect them to light up, but here they don't, although they're still easy enough to see. The touch-display measures 3.5 inches and although it's of the more expensive capacitive type, its performance is a tad disappointing. It was sluggish and failed to quickly respond to key presses and finger swipes.
