Touchscreen Tablet Reviews

After last year's Iconia Tab A500 and the 7-inch A100, Acer is promising an expanded range of Android tablets for 2012, including the entry-level 10.1-inch Iconia Tab A200. With its 1 GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor and 1 GB of RAM, the Iconia Tab A200 is a no-nonsense tablet that's got the basics covered. There's no rear-facing photo/video camera or brightness sensor, for example, but there is a 2-Megapixel webcam, an 8 GB internal memory and a 10.1-inch screen with 1280 x 800 pixels. The good news is that this tablet counts a USB 2.0 Host port among its connections, not to mention a 3.5 mm headphones jack, a micro-USB port and a microSD card slot for boosting storage by a maximum of 32 GB. The A200 ships pre-loaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, plus a few Acer apps and graphics options. The 8 GB Acer Iconia Tab A200 starts at around £320 while the 16 GB version sells for nearer £350. Design and Handling With a more compact, more appealing and more consumer-friendly design than last year's A500, the Iconia Tab A200 is a discreet tablet with a pleasant, inoffensive design. Plus, it's a product that gives an all-too-rare impression of sturdiness and robust build quality, despite its relatively modest price tag.

Acer Iconia Tab A200 Review

Acer has ton of tablets and makes them available for inexpensive prices. The newest Iconia A200 is no different with its 10.1-inch screen and running the Android 3.2 operating system.Like almost all PC makers, Acer has been dipping its toes in the Android tablet market for more than a year now, with little success to show with it. The A200 is its third major stab at an Android tablet, after the Iconia Tab A500 and small, 7-inch A100. Hopefully the third time is a charm, but even if it isn't, the company already has two more Android devices planned in the next few months and, like everyone, will be banking on Windows 8 tablets when the OS hits shelves later this year. Below is how the $320 to $350 Acer Iconia Tab A200 stacked up. The A200 is definitely a step up from Acer's previous 10.1-inch tablet, the Iconia Tab A500. Upon first glance, it's a lot sharper and looks like a more premium tablet. Acer has made improvements to almost every physical attribute. The back plate now has a rubberized texture to it, which makes it much easier to hold, and the power, volume, and orientation lock are easier to find and press. It's a bit thinner and lighter than its predecessor as well at 12.4 mm (the A500 was 13.3 mm) and 700 g (the A500 was 730 grams).

Acer Iconia Tab A200 Review

Most tablets that come out are trying to compete with Apple's flagship iPad, but that's not the case with Acer's Iconia Tab A200. Instead, Acer is targeting a family audience, with a tablet that can be used if you want to watch a film, play with some apps or surf the net. Acer has cleverly cut the corners of some less vital features in order to keep the price down, which is why the A200 comes in at a neat $299. View the A200 from the front and it looks pretty much like all the other 10,1inch tablets out there. A slim black bezel surrounds the display, offering just enough room to grip it well, without making the body too bulky. It's a neat device, measuring just 13mm at its thickest, and the reverse has a soft feel, which makes it comfortable to hold. It feels like a solid device – it weighs a hefty 720g, which is heavier than nearly every other tablet we have looked at, aside from the Asus Eee Pad Slider. You won't want to hold it one-handed for long – and children won't be able to handle it for long at all, so it will be their parents holding it if everyone's watching something together. The soft reverse, with its textured finish, along with the weighty body, mean that the A200 should stay put if it gets nudged while on a table or desk (good news if there's kids around).

Acer Iconia Tab A200

The Acer Iconia Tab A200 ($349.99 list) won't blow anyone away with its speed or looks. Instead, it's a quiet performer. The real draw here is the software, as it's one of only a handful of devices so far to get Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). The A200 may be a thick and heavy slab, but when you consider its bargain price, the A200 is a solid 10-inch tablet that runs Google's latest mobile OS without a hitch. Pricing, Physical Design, and Connectivity One of the main draws of the Iconia Tab A200 is its budget-friendly pricing. Acer offers two Wi-Fi-only models of the tablet, an 8GB for $329.99 and a 16GB for $349.99. This is considerably less than the Apple iPad 2 ($499, 4 stars) and the current top Android tablet, the Asus Transformer Prime ($499/32GB, 4 stars). However, this low price comes with some sacrifices—most notably in design. The A200 is an unassuming, chunky tablet, measuring 10.2 by 6.9 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at a rather hefty 1.54 pounds. The Transformer Prime is thinner and lighter, measuring just 0.3 inches at its thickest point and weighing only 1.3 pounds. The Prime also feels sleeker, with thin, tapered edges, as opposed to the flat and squat sides of the A200.

Acer Iconia Tab A200

There's really nothing special about the Acer Iconia Tab A200. Sure, it's ICS-upgradable, but both the Motorola Xoom and Asus Transformer Prime have already beat it to that particular punch. Also, while it features the bare minimum capabilities of all other post-Honeycomb Android tablets, it actually loses two features many Android tablet owners take for granted: a rear camera and an HDMI port. Still, it can be yours for only $330 (for 8GB; $350 for 16GB), making it the cheapest noncontract buy-in to Honeycomb/ICS yet. Whether that distinction actually makes it special enough to buy is up to you and your needs. The Iconia Tab A200 marks Acer's third major tablet design after the A500/A501 and A100 releases. Compared with the A500/A501, the A200 is both slightly thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with a sleeker, less boxy look. The tablet has a 10.1-inch capacitive touch screen, with a 2-megapixel camera on the front. Unfortunately, there's no back camera, a fact sure to disappoint those accustomed to dual-camera tablets. And by "those," I mean pretty much everyone.

Acer Iconia Tab A200 Review

Acer is out to prove that there's still plenty of room for tablets priced between the ultra-affordable Kindle Fire and the premium iPad 2. The $349 Acer Iconia Tab A200 offers dual-core performance, nifty software enhancments on top of Android and a full-size USB port for connecting peripherals. However, that doesn't mean that the A200 doesn't make some concessions to keep the price relatively low. Read on to find out what kind of deal you're really getting.Click to EnlargeAt 1.6 pounds and 10.2 x 6.9 x 0.5-inches, the Acer Iconia Tab A200 isn't the slimmest or lightest tablet on the block. That title goes to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and its 9.7 x 6.7 x 0.3-inch, 1.2-pound frame. At 1.3 pounds, both the iPad 2 (9.5 x 7.3 x 0.3-inches) and ASUS Transformer Prime (10.4 x 7.11 x 0.3-inches) are also slimmer and lighter than the Tab A200.Still, the A200's thicker size allows for a full-size USB 2.0 port, which can be found on the left along with a mini-USB port, a headphone jack and a chrome power button.Click to EnlargeDirectly below the USB 2.0 port, a microSD slot and a Reset button are hidden under a cumbersome plastic cover. A lone power jack sits at the top of the right panel. A chrome volume rocker and a rotation-lock switch are located on the top of the tablet.

Acer ICONIA TAB A200 Review

Having gotten their feet wet in the whole Android Honeycomb tablet scene already, Acer are back for round two with their second take at the whole 10.1-inch tablet form factor. Rather than putting out something that’s going to be garnered as a cutting-edge model, the Acer ICONIA TAB A200 will instead target the other end of the spectrum by attracting those who are on a budget. Modestly priced at the starting price of $330, it’s obviously higher than some of the budget tablets out there, like the Amazon Kindle and NOOK Tablet, but then again, it packs a larger display and is backed by the full fidelity of the Honeycomb experience.Building upon the design style of the A500 from before, this time around it seems that Acer has finally done justice in the design of the A200 because it simply looks better and feels more sturdy in construction. Sharing some similarities, like its tapered top and bottom edges, we’re gladly accepting of its updated styling – though, it packs a wallop in the weight (24.69 oz) department. Nevertheless, we prefer the choice of materials that Acer decided to go with, like the textured rubbery back cover that keeps the tablet clean looking and provides a comfortable hold in the hand.
