ViewSonic PLED-W200 Portable Business Projector
There are consumer projectors of nearly every shape and size and for a myriad of purposes. From big, feature-rich monsters ideal for large home theaters to tiny pico projectors (which can now be found in some smartphones), there are projectors available now that let users display photos or video for a small audience almost anywhere. In the middle of the market there is a wide swathe of options. One of the target demographics is business travelers who need to make presentations on the road. Those folks need something that's compact and lightweight, can connect to a variety of media sources in a pinch, and project an image bright enough to be seen in rooms with lots of ambient light. And that's what ViewSonic is looking to deliver with the palm-sized PLED-W200 we'll be showing you here. The PLED-W200 LED projector is delightfully small at just about 5 inches square and 1.3 inches thick, and it weighs less than a pound. The power adapter adds to the gross bulk of the package, but not by much, and there's just a CEA adapter (with a female audio jack, a composite video input, and a 15-pin mini-D-Sub plus), an extremely slim and compact remote control, and a ViewSonic Wizard CD for accessories.

Palmtop projectors like the ViewSonic PLED-W200 ($500 street) aren't quite as interesting as they were even a year ago. That's partly because pico projectors in the size category below them have gotten brighter, and partly because they're now also in competition with budget micro projectors, which are brighter, not much heavier, and don't need proprietary cables or a separate power block. Even so, the palmtop size remains worth considering, and the PLED-W200 , with its claimed WXGA (1,280 by 800) native resolution, is an attractive member of the breed. Like most pico and palmtop models, the PLED-W200 is built around a DLP chip and LED light source, a combination that helps rein in both size and weight. The PLED-W200 measures just 1.3 by 5.1 by 5.0 inches (HWD) and weighs 0.9 pounds by itself. Even at 1.4 pounds with the required power block, it's still about a pound lighter than budget micro projectors in the next step up, including, for example, the Optoma ML500 ($650, 3.5 stars) and the Acer K330 ($600 street, 3.5 stars) that I've recently reviewed. The key limitation that goes along with the small size is a relatively low brightness, with a 250 lumen rating. Fortunately, that's not as low as it may sound compared with portable projectors rated at 2,000 or 3,000 lumens.

Business travelers need a projector that's small enough to carry anywhere, but big enough to lend impact to their presentations. The $499 ASUS P1 DLP LED projector fills those needs well, offering a bright, colorful image with plenty of options for those who like to tweak image settings.ViewSonic tried to imbue the W200 with some style, but it backfired a bit. The top of the projector is a two-tone plastic, with a wavy line in the middle separating a brushed gray section from a black, metallic-flaked section. Not only do we think it's a bit gaudier than the flat gray metal of the ASUS P1, but it also picks up fingerprints too easily.Square with rounded corners, the top and bottom of the W200 bulges out slightly to accommodate the lens and focusing ring. At 5.1 x 5 x 1.3 inches, the W200 is practically the same size as the ASUS P1 (5.1 x 4.9 x 1.3 inches), and both weigh 14.6 ounces. You won't know the difference in your bag.The top of the W200 has five buttons for navigating the on-screen menus. The right side has a port for connecting the VGA adapter, as well as a miniUSB port and an SD card slot, two features lacking on the ASUS P1. On the bottom, the W200 has a small screw foot that allows you to project at multiple angles.
