With a decent 46-inch 120Hz LED-backlit display, a pretty good media player, and support for Yahoo Widgets, Netflix, Vudu, and a few other top-tier commercial on-demand Web services, the Toshiba 46SL417U enters the midsize connected-HDTV fray in style. But the field is tough these days, and with a street price of just under $1100 (as of June 9, 2011), the 46SL417U faces stiff competition from highly rated models (some with 3D support, which this set lacks) at a similar or somewhat lower price. It's not so much that this set has any major problems. It's just that the 46SL417U has a slew of design annoyances, and while nothing in our juried image-quality tests raised a huge red flag, nothing in the results made this HDTV particularly compelling, either. It scored pretty much straight down the middle, earning average ratings of Good for contrast, color tones, and handling of motion and detail. Judges generally liked the way it handled our recorded high-def video clips, but a few found its DVD and Blu-ray videos a tad oversaturated, and they remarked on the loss of detail in a test clip from the Blu-ray version of The Dark Knight. And while it aced our motion benchmarks, we saw considerable stuttering in our diagonal-panning test.
These days, it's incredible how much you can get in an HDTV at an affordable price - that is, as long as you don't care about 3D, a razor-thin profile, or a perfect picture. The Toshiba 46SL417U, a 47-inch LED-lit HDTV, offers a nice selection of features, including built-in Wi-fi, a solid stable of Web apps, and some of the best energy-consumption stats we've seen in a screen this size, all for just $1,099.99 (direct). This set isn't perfect; the menu system is convoluted and the picture lacks shadow detail, but for the price, it's a solid deal. The set combines a simple, utilitarian design with a surprising splash of style. If you look at the screen head-on, you'll see a simple Toshiba HDTV, with a plain flat bezel highlighted only by the Toshiba logo in the middle of the lower edge. If you look at it from an angle, though, you'll see a surprising flourish seldom seen on today's TVs: chrome. The left and right edges of the HDTV are mirror-finished, chrome plastic. A ton of reflective chrome would be distracting when watching the screen, but the hints of chrome on the sides here simply make the set look appealingly unique. The screen measures just 1.2 inches thick, very thin but certainly not record-breaking for an LED-backlit set.
As the prices of LED televisions recede, it seems as if quality, performance, size and features are finally coming into focus. A year ago, the notion of getting a 46-inch, LED-backlit, 1080p, 120hz display with a bevy of Internet apps, widgets and Wi-Fi for around $1,000 seemed like a pipe-dream. Yet, here we sit with the Toshiba 46SL417U, which offers all of the above, perhaps hitting the proverbial bulls-eye of the value proposition target. Unfortunately, this TV, like so many others, is not without its quirks. We spent some quality time with the Toshiba 46SL417U and discovered where it delivers and where it fails. This particular display’s packaging was about as slim as the TV itself. Since the TV is pretty light and the packaging slim, one person managed to carry the 46SL417U down a flight of stairs and into our testing room. Times have changed, indeed.Once opened, the box yielded the display, its stand, a remote control and a user manual. The 46SL417U is a reasonably attractive TV. Its bezel is thin enough (as little as 1 inch toward the top), but it isn’t uniform. The left and right edges of the display are trimmed with chrome pieces, and the bottom edge is lined with a thick enough piece to house down-firing speakers, control buttons and an LED indicator light.
