For a company that's long been entrenched in the camcorder space, Sony's pocket video cameras have always been off target in terms of features and usability. The Bloggie MHS-PM5 minicamcorder, however, at least shows improvement and a better understanding of what consumers are after with these devices. The Bloggie matches up well against competing models when it comes to shooting movies, offering good features and decent results. Sharing your clips, on the other hand, is not as user-friendly as cams from Flip Video, Kodak, and others. Also, the product name, however silly it sounds, is an accurate descriptor. Its clips are suitable for Web sharing and nondiscerning TV viewing. Just because it's capable of recording at 1080p doesn't mean it can replace larger full HD camcorders or that the video is "Blu-ray quality." There are two versions of the Bloggie PM5 available; one is only the video camera, whereas the other comes with a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card and a snap-on 360-degree lens for an extra $20. The lens is fun, but the outcome is definitely more arty than useful, and Mac users can't take full advantage of the clips. The PM5 is a candy-bar-style camcorder that's slim and light enough to keep in a pants pocket; it's available in blue, white, pink, and dark purple.
We review Sony's new Bloggie MHS-PM5K camcorder which features 1080p video and a snap-on 360 degree lens. Editor’s note: The ordinary Sony MHS-PM5 retails for $150, while the MHS-PM5K we reviewed retails for $170 directly from Sony with a 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo card and 360-degree lens.Panoramas do not have to be frozen in time any more. Sony’s latest pocket camcorder, the swiveling MHS-PM5K, captures a full 360-degree field of view with a simple add-on lens, producing playable panoramas that you can literally look around in as you watch. When you’re done, snap it off and you’re back to shooting true 1080p video. While novel, lightweight and surprisingly affordable at $170 (or $150 for the version without the 360 attachment), we found the Bloggie PM5K can’t match the video quality of many less endeavoring pocket cams. The Bloggie shoots true 1080p video and 720p video at 60 frames per second, with SteadyShot electronic image stabilization and 4x digital zoom. Those specs put it roughly in league with the likes of Kodak’s Zi8, JVC’s Picsio FM1, and Samsung’s HMX-U10. What sets the Bloggie apart from this growing crowd of evolved pocket cams? A swiveling, top-mounted lens.
The Sony Bloggie MHS-PM5 ($169.99 direct) high-definition pocket camcorder offers great image quality, ease of use, and a top-notch design - all at an affordable price. Our Editors' Choice pocket video camera, the Kodak Zi8 ($179.99, ), has a slight edge over the Bloggie with a macro focus feature, a microphone input, sightly better video quality, and an HDMI out for digital HD playback on an HDTV. But if you're simply looking for an inexpensive and reliable pocket camera, the Bloggie is a very solid choice. Despite being one of the most inexpensive pocket HD camcorders you can buy, the PM5 doesn't feel cheap. It's actually cute; the front and back of the body sport a glossy coating, and the sides are polished chrome. My review model was a deep purple (Eggplant), but you can also opt for White, Pink, or Blue. Measuring 4.4 by 2.25 by .75 inches (HWD), the 4.5-ounce Bloggie is a bit thinner than a deck of cards and fits comfortably in your palm. One of the camera's unique features is its pivoting lens, which rotates 270 degrees, so the camera can be used to film the action in front of you, or for self-portraits. No matter which way the lens is facing, the camera's software orients the image so your subjects are always right side up.
The Bloggie, otherwise known as the MHS-PM5K, is Sony's latest addition to the ever-growing selection of ultra-compact HD camcorders to have flooded onto the market over the last year. With so many pocket cams to choose from, manufacturers are vying to find the function that will place their bijou camcorder one step ahead of the rest. Over at Sony, everything's riding on the 270° swivel lens. This lens has already featured in a previous version of the Bloggie, known as the Webbie (MHS-PM1), only released in the USA. So what's so good about a swivel lens? Well, there are several advantages, and one of the main ones isn't necessarily the most obvious: it helps protect the lens. When you swivel the lens round to face downwards, the lens is effectively hidden inside the camcorder. When closed like this, the Bloggie could easily be mistaken for a mobile phone. As soon as you spin the lens round, the camcorder automatically switches on, then switches off again when you flip it back round to face downwards. The swivel design also means you can film scenes looking up or down at all kinds of angles while keeping the camcorder perfectly upright. I tested it out at a Chinese New Year parade (watch my video), and it was certainly practical for filming above a crowd while still keeping an eye on the camcorder's screen.
