The NSSEA Winter Conference Cruise of 2010 was likely the best NSSEA conference that my wife and I have attended. We learned so much and had a wonderful time connecting with our industry friends. Ports of call included a departure from Fort Lauderdale, followed by San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; Tortola, BVI; and Labadee, Haiti. We had two full days at sea packed with informative meetings including hot topics such as effectively promoting a school supply retail store, staying up on the latest legislative requirements, financial management, what's hot in education, and ways to use social networking with your business. Whew! Lots of information and lots of fun. In this video you will see scenes from the Celebrity Solstice, gorgeous views from San Cristobal fort in San Juan, a wild ride on the Scoot Coupes excursion in St. Maarten, a fantastic team-building experience at The Baths on Virgin Gorda, and a surprisingly enjoyable day in Labadee Haiti. You may want to see my other video where I interview our tour guide for the Malfini Beach excursion, Alain, to get his thoughts on whether it is right for cruise tourists to have a good time in Haiti so soon after the devasting earthquake of January 12. Here's a wild ride on the Scoot Coupes in St. Maarten. This shore excursion booked through Celebrity Cruises is called St. Maarten Beach Fun Mobile Tour SMA2. I drove the Scootcoup while my wife videoed our trip for the second part. The tour took us from downtown Philipsburg along a beach road and up lots of steep hills. Unfortunately, we didn't video the ride out, which had the most beautiful scenery. On the way to Orient Beach, we stopped alongside another beach for a five-minute informative talk and demonstration about sea life, such as conch, urchin, and starfish. This was an opportunity to hold and touch living sea organisms. Then, back in the Scoot Coupes and onward to Orient Beach for a 45-minute stay. Just enough time to walk the beach and see some of the naked people. (I'm sure they appreciate the cruise passengers gawking at them.) On the return trip, I continued to drive, although you can switch drivers, and my wife videoed using our compact Sony HDR-TG5V. We really didn't know what to expect on the way out, so that's probably why we didn't get video. With something new, whether it's Segways or zip lines, you always have a little apprehension the first time. These ScootCoupes are really fun, though, and seem relatively safe. You go in a procession with your blinkers on. The escorts on 4-wheelers do a great job keeping the group together and stopping other traffic when needed. They have no fear as you can see in this video but seem quite skilled at what they do ...
