Sony HDR-CX520V

With a six-month lag behind their hard-drive-based siblings, the HDR-XR500V and HDR-XR520V, the HDR-CX500V and CX520V promised some much-needed interface enhancements over their solid-but-flawed brothers. While I don't think the interface and control layout changes make much of an improvement, many people will probably feel the operational annoyances are worth the tradeoff: the same high-quality video and performance of their hard-disk-based counterparts in more compact packages. The two models differ only by built-in memory--the CX500V has 32GB, while the CX520V includes 64GB. While these flash models retain most of the capabilities of the hard-drive versions, Sony did jettison the EVF, moving that into the newer CX550V along with the microphone and headphone jacks (since the CX550V uses a different lens, we don't consider it part of the line from a testing perspective). However, that leaves the Panasonic HDC-TM700 as the only sub-$1,000 model with an EVF. While not as compact as a lot of flash-based camcorders, that's due in part to the CX500V/CX520V's excellent and necessarily large lens. It's still relatively small and light, fitting into a large jacket pocket.

Sony HDR-CX520V Review

The Sony HDR-CX520V high-definition camcorder which we review, produces quality video, but lacks in a few key areas that hold it back from really standing out. It was hard walking the aisles at CES without tripping over mounds of flash memory camcorders like the Flip. Harder to find were higher-quality “real” camcorders with zoom lenses and much better high-definition (HD) performance. Oh, they were there all right – if you could fight your way through the crowds ogling 3D HDTV demos. Once you found them though, one huge trend beat you over the head—the fact that 2010 is a flash memory camcorder world as tape, disk and even HDD models fade away. A fine example of a top-quality unit being the Sony Handycam HDR-CX520V, which is about as far from a Flip as you can imagine. To find out just how far, read onward…One of the key reasons flash memory video cameras are wildly popular is the fact that they’re so much smaller and lighter than other storage types. Consider that the Sony Handycam HDR-CX520V weighs just a pound with battery, making it easy to carry around without your arm falling off.
