Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9

A small and attractive digital camera with a decent price, a 16-megapixel backlit sensor, and an impressive set of features, the Sony WX9 nonetheless falls down in the imaging department, due to excessive noise suppression and a poor quality lens. Sony has long made small, attractive point-and-shoot cameras. The Cyber-shot line has produced a number of high-performance models, though their often high pricetags have put them out of contention for bargain hunters. The WX9 seems to pack value into its $200 price point, integrating the line's impressive snapshot features, a dense 16.2-megapixel sensor, full HD 1080/60i video, and large 3.0-inch LCD screen. The 16.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot WX9 is a dressed up point-and-shoot digital camera. It joins HD video capture, Panorama stitching, and a DSLR-like background blur mode with a thin, attractive frame. Sony has done an effective, if not creative, job of integrating memorable snapshot features throughout the stylish design. The pocketable WX9, however, faces stiff competition in the $200-$220 price range. Look and feel. Aesthetics have always been an asset of the Cyber-shot line, and the Sony WX9 is no exception.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9

The Cyber-shot WX9 is Sony's entry point for getting an Exmor R backside-illuminated CMOS sensor. These sensors, which provide faster shooting performance and better low-light quality, were previously used only in Sony's higher-end Cyber-shots; the WX9's MSRP puts it squarely in the midrange. Add in a high-res 3-inch LCD, a 5x, f2.6 25mm-equivalent ultrawide-angle lens, and full HD movie capture at the press of a button and the WX9 becomes an incredible value. And the photos are pretty great for its class, too, as long as you don't mind softness when viewed at their full 16-megapixel resolution. With its f2.6 maximum aperture and BSI CMOS sensor, the WX9's photo quality is very good indoors and out. The only real disappointment is that photos aren't very sharp, even at its lowest ISO. However, there's little difference between photos taken at ISO 100 and ISO 400. Noise reduction kicks in more at ISO 800, though, which smears details and dulls colors some. There's a noticeable increase in noise and noise reduction at ISO 1,600 and ISO 3,200 making colors more washed out and subjects appear painterly; you'll probably want to reserve these two highest sensitivities for emergencies when you need to shoot in low-light conditions or get a faster shutter speed regardless of the results.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9 Review

Review: The Sony DSC-WX9 features high quality stills and videos that demolish any camera in the same price range. You’ve heard of 16-megapixel DSLRs—how about a 16.2MP point-and-shoot? That’s what Sony just introduced and the WX9 not only takes 4608 x 3456 pixel photos, but Full HD AVCHD videos which is a very unique combination. Let’s see if this is finally the “best of both worlds” device we’ve been searching for.A quick glance at the DSC-WX9 with its Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 5x 25-125mm lens won’t leave you super impressed. Available in silver, red or black (our review sample), the camera has the classic Altoids tin shape, although it’s actually smaller and thinner than the candy carrier. Measuring 3.75 x 2.25 x .78 (WHD, in inches), it weighs 4.9 ounces fully loaded. In other words you can carry this around all day with your smartphone and still not be burdened. As a capture device, it’s so much better than an iPhone, iPad or Droid it’s ridiculous, but we’re getting ahead of ourselves. The camera has a nice matte surface which is fine but there’s too much text surrounding the lens and it could lose the “16.2 megapixels” nomenclature.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX9

The Sony Cyber-shot WX9 is a slick new compact camera, announced by Sony at this year's CES trade show. It's packing a brand new sensor, a glorious 3-inch LCD, and 1080/60i video recording... all for an MSRP of $219.99. When the WX9 lands in our labs later this year, we're hoping the camera's performance does justice to its specs. The top of the camera is primarily home to the shutter release, zoom toggle, and power button. The WX9's bottom holds a tripod mount and the compartment for housing the battery, card slot, and AV output. The lower end of Cyber-shot cameras is consistently centered upon ease-of-use; the WX9 seems to be no exception. The camera offers a large graphical interface that is easily navigated with the scroll wheel. There’s a discrete Easy mode, for users that are intimidated by having too many shooting options. And, we must admit, there are a lot of buttons on the camera, which could potentially confuse very beginning photographers. The WX9 is a small camera, though it’s pretty average compared to most compact point-and-shoot cameras. The measurements are 3.75? × 2.25? × 0.78? (94.6mm x 56.3mm x 19.8mm) and the weight is 4.9 oz. (139g). Basically, that’s no smaller than a lot of cameras, but certainly small enough to put in your pocket.
