Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 Review

Review: The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 uses a rugged design to go where few digital cameras will, and looks good doing it.All tough cams are not made equally – or similarly for that matter. Sony offers up the world’s slimmest rugged point and shoot, along with a very capable touchscreen responsible for most of the camera’s operations. Its most notable elements will either win users over (tiny size, touchscreen dependence) or be the reason they opt for a competitor’s camera like the Olympus TG-610.First off, we’ll start with what the TX5 has going for it. It’s an incredibly light and slim device, with a sliding panel to protect the lens. Touch pocket cams don’t always have the luxury of being quite as convenient to carry as Sony’s – it weighs a mere 5.1 ounces and its backside is all screen. The 3-inch LCD touchscreen packs approximately 230,000 pixels in resolution. It registers touch surprisingly well and doesn’t require tap after tap after tap to get where you want to go – but always expect this to get a little more difficult underwater, or while wearing gloves. But back to what it does well. The sliding panel not only protects the camera lens but functions as a power switch, yet another convenience in a tough cam.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5

Are you looking for a stylish camera or a rugged camera? Usually you have to pick one trait or the other, but the 10-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 offers both. The DSC-TX5 looks just like many of the other slim, fashionable models in the Cyber-shot TX series, but this camera is built to withstand shocks, water, freezing, heat, and dust. In fact, I had to look twice to make sure I was holding the right camera before I dunked it into the pool. The DSC-TX5 comes in green, pink, red, black, and silver, and is priced at $330 (as of May 17, 2010). The camera is waterproof down to 10 feet below the surface, shockproof to falls of as much as 5 feet, and dustproof; it can withstand temperatures from 14 degrees to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Beyond its stylish exterior, it also has features that make it a good choice for day-to-day use, including anti-motion-blur mode, Sony's revamped Intelligent Sweep Panorama mode, and a high-definition movie mode that records 720p MPEG-4 video at 30 frames per second. The DSC-TX5 feels pretty sturdy--as a rugged camera should--and it has a shiny sliding cover to protect its 4X-optical-zoom Carl Zeiss lens (25mm wide-angle to 100mm telephoto). I found the lens cover a little hard to slide, especially in the water.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras

For most manufacturers, 2009 was the year of the waterproof camera. But whereas other brands took to the trend like ducks to water, Sony was slightly more reluctant in taking the plunge. In fact, it's only now, in spring 2010, that Sony has released its first all-terrain camera, the Cyber-Shot TX5. Logically, the TX5 should slot into Sony's range somewhere between the of late 2009 and the TX7. Unlike these two models, though, the TX5 is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof. And with so many waterproof cameras now on the market, the TX5 has plenty of fine features to help ward off the competition. Waterproof cameras usually have to compromise design in favour of resistance. They're generally thick, heavy and have a 'rugged' look to them, and their waterproof controls can be less pleasant to handle. The Sony TX5, however, sets a new standard in design, with a casing that looks no different to other models in the brand's super-slim and stylish T series of compacts. The TX5 is about a millimetre thicker than the TX1, and waterproofing isn't the only new feature, as the TX5 also boasts an ultra-wide-angle lens and a 4x zoom starting at 25 mm rather than 35 mm.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 digital camera is a slim, stylish pocket digital camera that has a secret: It's waterproof. The Sony TX5 is based around the combination of a 10.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor and a 4x optical zoom lens. The Sony TX5's sensor is what's known as a backside illuminated (BSI) design, meaning that its circuitry is placed on the non-light-gathering side of the sensor, allowing the maximum area of the sensor's other side to be devoted to light gathering. This should translate to higher sensitivity, and to reduced noise levels when compared to a non-BSI sensor for the same sensitivity. Actual focal lengths vary from 4.43mm to 17.7mm, equivalent to a range of 25 to 100mm in still image mode. This equates to everything from a generous wide-angle to a moderate telephoto. When shooting high-def movies, the sensor crop raises the effective focal lengths to a range of 28 to 112mm, and for standard-def movies the range is equivalent to 34 to 136mm. The Sony TX5 has a maximum aperture which varies from f/3.5 to f/4.6 across the zoom range. At wide-angle the minimum aperture is f/6.3.

Sony DSC-TX5 Digital Camera Review

In our tests on how accurately the TX5 captured colors, we found that it did an excellent job, capturing colors that were very close to the originals in our test chart. We test this by photographing a color chart under tightly controlled conditions, then using Imatest to analyze how closely the colors match the original in the chart. The only areas where we found a minor issue was with some of the yellows and blues on the chart, which came out a little oversaturated, producing colors that were a little bright. But this was a minor issue, and the color was generally very good. Noise is the curse of digital photography. Caused by random glitches in the image sensor, it shows up as a staticky pattern on images, especially those shot with the ISO cranked up. Although there is noise on the images captured by the TX5, we found that the amount of noise was generally a lot lower than other cameras, with images having a cleaner, smoother look. Sony says that their new Exmor R sensor has lower noise than others, and that certainly seems to be true in our tests
