Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 is an ultracompact with a secret. Underneath its bright, modern exterior is a rugged tough-cam, built to withstand punishment from both earth and sea. Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and coldproof; this slim point-and-shoot is practically immune to the elements. Image quality is also solid, thanks to a few hardware and software improvements over its predecessor, the TX5. While ruggedized cameras have a reputation for producing images of lesser quality, the TX10 earns a solid score in our color accuracy test, despite the hardy exterior. Its error value, 2.95, is worse than some, but average in this class. Reds are blues are the worst offenders, and they almost single-handedly account for this model’s 10% oversaturation. More on how we test color. Although this is a decent score, the results are not an improvement over competing models such as Pentax’s WG-1, Panasonic’s Lumix TS3, or even Sony’s own TX5, this camera’s predecessor. Pentax pulls ahead of the pack here with an outstanding color score by any standard, tough-cam or not.
Review Summary: While it's waterproof, rugged, and slick looking enough to slip into a suit, the Sony TX10's touchscreen doesn't work as well as it should, making this otherwise nice little camera harder to recommend. Pros: Fast shutter lag; Full HD video with stereo audio; iSweep Panorama mode; Low-light modes. Cons: Inconsistent touchscreen; Touchscreen doesn't work under water; Sluggish interface; Movies are slow to start recording. Price and Availability: Available in five body colors, the Sony TX10 started shipping in March 2011. Suggested retail price is US$330. Colors include silver, black, green, blue, and pink. I have to hand it to Sony. When I found out the TX10 was waterproof, I worried about just exactly how I was going to test that pivotal feature. But I didn't have to worry at all. Sony managed to find a way to make the interface on the TX10 feel as sluggish and breathless as if you were under water even when you are basking in sunshine with sun block on your nose. Their secret? A very insensitive touchscreen. At first, I assumed it was me. My finger would tap the screen. Nothing would happen. Tap again. Nothing again. Thinking I was smarter than the TX10, I used its stylus to poke and prod the screen.
The Sony Cyber-shot TX10, announced in January 2011, is a 16.2 Megapixel compact with a 4x stabilised zoom and a 3 inch LCD wide touch-sensitive screen. Like other TX-series models the TX10 is, in Sony's words, 'sleek and stylish', with a non-extending lens protected by a slide-down panel when not in use. A well as sleekness, the other defining characteristic of the TX10 is ruggedness: it's water proof and dust proof to a depth of 5 metres, shockproof against a drop of up to 1.5 Metres and freeze proof down to -10C. The Cyber-shot TX10 has all of the features you'd expect to find in a mid-range compact including fully auto exposure modes with scene detection and Face AF as well as trademark Sony features like sweep panorama and multi-angle 3D modes. The stacking composite low-light modes for which Sony's Exmor R back -illuminated sensor is well known are complemented in this model by a new HDR mode. As well as all that it's a capable video camera with full HD 1080i and 25fps 1080p video recording. We've compared it alongside two similarly priced touch-screen compacts, the Canon IXUS 310 HS / ELPH 500 HS and the Panasonic Lumix FX77/78. Can the TX10 deliver all you'd expect from a 'conventional' compact, or does its ruggedness come at the cost of compromises elsewhere? Read our full review to find out.
From a quick glance at its tech specs, the Sony Cyber-shot TX10 looks like a fairly typical high-end camera. It has a 16-Megapixel inverted CMOS sensor, an optical stabilisation system, a 4x (25-100 mm) zoom lens, a 1080 HD video mode with stereo sound, a 3D picture mode, a touchscreen interface, a sleek design and more besides. However, this camera has got one unexpected trick up its sleeve: it's also waterproof and shockproof. With the TX5, Sony changed the rules of the game for waterproof compacts. Previously waterproof point-and-shoots had always been built with a rugged, all-terrain design with chunky casings, big visible screws, rubber shock absorbers etc. Sony's models, on the other hand, have a much more classic design and they're all the more stylish for it. In fact, at first glance, it's hard to tell a TX waterproof compact apart from a regular Sony T-series camera. The touchscreen interface means that buttons can be kept to a minimum, with physical controls only remaining for on/off, shutter release, video record, zoom and playback. The TX10 may be designed with smooth, flowing curves that are easy on the eye, but it isn't the most comfortable camera to hold—we found that it slipped out of our hands quite easily.
