Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-TX1

Sony's new DSC-TX1 is driven almost completely by a touch-based interface. This being the case the rear of the camera is dominated by a large 3-inch LCD, though there are a few buttons (such as shutter control and zoom) strewn across the camera's top body.Using the Sony we found ourselves getting annoyed on occasion because while the buttons worked perfectly, the touchscreen proved finicky and clumsy at times. In terms of features the DSC-TX1 has an ace up its sleeve in the form of its ‘Sweep Panorama' mode. Using this mode the camera shoots in bursts as you move it from side-to-side or even from up-to-down and then automatically stitches the images together to create a panorama. Though our first and second attempts returned far from ideal results, when we slowed down our hand movement, the Cyber-shot returned panoramas that were quite impressive. As the TX1 features a CMOS sensor traditionally found on expensive SLR cameras we were expecting the Sony to perform well. Unfortunately, in reality it proved quite an uneven performer. While some snaps were captured with excellent colour accuracy others seemed artificially bright, making the subject look fluorescent. Sharpness was also a miss in certain images.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 (silver)

With the Cyber-shot DSC-TX1, Sony packed a lot of fun into a little camera. Without getting into all the technology, the ultracompact shines in low-light conditions, can shoot 10 frames per second at full resolution, and creates panorama shots with near-zero effort. That it can do these things at its petite dimensions is fairly amazing and is really what makes up most of its tidy sum. However, view its photos at full size or heavily cropped and you'll easily notice shortcomings like noise/artifacts, lack of fine detail, and a general overprocessed appearance. Its photos are best suited for prints of 8x10 inches or smaller, viewing on a TV, and Web use. So, if your eye isn't that critical, its features and design definitely make it worth considering. The TX1 looks the part of a nightlife camera. Available in four colors--blue, gray, silver, and pink--it is eye-catching for its size alone. Add in its near-total lack of physical controls, the slide-down brushed-metal lens cover, and the 3-inch touch-screen LCD, and you're bound to get looks and questions. The slim body doesn't give you much room to rest your fingers and with the internal lens positioned high on the front left side, it's easy to accidentally get your digits in shots and touch the lens.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX1 Touchscreen Digital Camera

The holiday season is here, as are the accompanying parties and celebratory events. If you're all gussied up, you might as well bring a camera like Sony's fashion-conscious, 10.2-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC TX1 ($380 as of 11/23/2009), a touchscreen camera that lets you party instead of fussing with camera settings. Measuring 3.75 by 2.38 by 0.66 inches and weighing five ounces, the DSC-TX1 is small enough to fit into a coat pocket, and it won't take up a lot of room in a purse. The metal body has a front panel that slides down to reveal the camera's 4X Carl Zeiss optical-zoom lens, which has a range of 35mm to 140mm. A power button is on the top, so you can turn on the camera to peruse your pics and still have the lens protected while the camera is in your hands. Next to the power button is the shutter button, which, like the rest of the camera, is narrow. When using autofocus, I had a difficult time feeling whether the button was pressed halfway down; I relied on the audible cue to tell me when I had pushed the shutter button down far enough for focus. Fortunately, the button responds well when you push it down completely to take a picture, and I saw no shutter lag.

Product Survey: Compact Digital Cameras 2009

Like its predecessors, the TX1, the latest member of Sony's T range of cameras, is an ultra-flat stylish compact with a touchscreen interface. It does have one big new feature though--an Exmor R sensor--which, despite having fewer pixels, should produce better quality images. The TX1's design provoked a variety of comments here in our lab, perhaps because we were testing the gold version of the camera, which looks more like a make-up case than a digital camera. It's impeccably built: the sliding lens cover moves perfectly and the battery flap opens easily. The only real problem is the zoom control beside the shutter release button, which is difficult to control and not much use. And, while we're on the subject, the lack of a wide-angle lens is also a big shame. The back of the camera is entirely taken up by a widescreen display in the 5:3 aspect ratio, just a little less narrow than a 16:9 screen. It measures 3'' but only shows 230 000 pixels, making for a noticeable difference compared to the Panasonic TZ7. The touchscreen interface works well, although it would have been great to have a multitouch system for zooming into photos.
