Looking for one compact 'travel zoom' camera that does it all? If you haven't had your head turned by the workmanlike reliability of Panasonic's TZ series, such as the Panasonic Lumix TZ20, nor sports car exterior and gimmicky triple-action sensor of the Fuji FinePix F600 EXR, then the chunkier Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX9V,at 34mm 'thick', is another to add to that checklist. Part of Sony's high performance range of compact cameras, it shares or matches many of the core features of both rivals, while slipping readily into a pocket or bag.For starters, there's a 16.2MP top stills resolution, this time from a 1/2.3-inch Exmor R CMOS sensor.Sony extends its desirability as a travel companion by offering both a built-in GPS unit and a 16x optical zoom, with a usefully broad focal range equivalent to 24-384mm in 35mm terms. This enables wide-angle close ups and the ability to pull the faraway a fair amount closer at the telephoto end. In addition, as on the Panasonic TZ20, this Cyber-Shot boasts software-based 3D capture. Most effective is Sweep Panorama mode, which automatically generates a single elongated image as an MPO image file, viewable in its fullest tri-dimensional form only via a suitably equipped TV.
Sony is out for blood with their HX9V, a relatively expensive, high performance travel zoom that aims to be nothing less than the best camera in the category. Optical zoom has been upgraded to 16x, and it's likely Sony stuck with the same 16 megapixel sensor that powers their excellent HX100V, as well as this camera's predecessor, the HX7V. The HX9V is a highly accurate camera, and this will make all photos more realistic and lifelike, especially shots with human subjects. Our color test revealed an error rating of only 2.42, with oversaturation of only 2.6%. Inaccuracies, when they occur, are spread evenly across the spectrum, though blues are a little further off than the rest. More on how we test color. These scores are the best in our comparison group, with the closest competition coming from Panasonic’s ZS10. Fujifilm’s F600EXR also scored fairly well in this test, while the otherwise-excellent Casio ZR100 lags behind. Undesirable image noise can pollute shots captured with high ISO values, but the HX9V does a great job keeping this to a minimum. Visual artifacts make up only 0.49% of images shot at ISO 100, and that figure doesn’t cross 1.00% until ISO 1600.
Sony's CyberShot DSC-HX9V might seem like something of a gadget lover's dream; the amount of extras packed in would embarrass a DSLR feature list, let alone one of a compact. Putting aside the admittedly huge zoom and high resolution sensor the likes of a 3D panorama sweep mode and 1080p high definition movie mode are impressive supplemental features, and the GPS with compass feature make geotagging images a cinch.Of the features on offer the 16.2MP CMOS sensor perhaps takes centre stage, which is a backlit Exmor R variety supposedly boosting the low light performance. To cope with both the large resolution and high zoom range without displaying huge amounts of noise the sensor will need to assist where possible without leaving the bulk of the heavy lifting to the processing. In order to balance out the shutter speed and avoid soft focus through hand shake an optical image stabilizer is present, which is a highly helpful extra when the 24-384mm is used to it's full extent. The 3D Sweep Panorama option may be something of a cause for confusion as only one lens is present.
The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V is a 16.2 Megapixel pocket super-zoom with a 16x stabilised optical zoom lens, 24mm wide angle coverage and a 3in LCD screen. With a new 16.2 Megapixel back-illuminated Exmor-R CMOS sensor, which it shares with the jointly-announced HX100V 30x super-zoom, the Cyber-shot HX9V is capable of full resolution fast burst shooting and full HD 1080p60 video. Like the earlier HX5, the Cyber-shot HX9V has a built-in GPS receiver which appends lat, long, and altitude information to the image EXIF data. Sony has introduced some new panoramic and 3D shooting modes in addition to the composite modes - Hand-held Twilight and Anti motion Blur - for which its Exmor-based models are now well-known. The Backlight Correction HDR mode has been upgraded to use three rather than just two shots and, like the earlier HX5, the HX9V provides full manual control (albeit still with only two apertures) in addition to Program, two intelligent Auto and a variety of scene exposure modes. While there's a lot of new stuff to talk about the two things that will occupy most people's attention are the new 16x zoom range and the performance of the new 16.2 megapixel CMOS sensor.
The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V is a prototypical pocket long zoom digital camera a breed of camera that's noticeably smaller than a DSLR, but more capable than a point-and-shoot. Sporting a thin, rectangular frame, the HX9V's 16x zoom lens and diverse snapshot-oriented feature set yields high-resolution stills, 3D panoramas, and Full HD video with stereo audio. Along with 16.2-megapixel files and a 3.0-inch LCD screen, the Cyber-shot HX9V delivers performance, automation, and a photo-savvy design, making it a viable point-and-click or more affordable alternative to interchangeable lens systems. Priced at $349.99, the Sony Cyber-shot HX9V presents a feature-laden compact digital camera with a blend of DSLR controls, setting versatility, and ease-of-use that makes it a strong option for photography enthusiasts on the go. Backed by a 16.2-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and optically-stabilized 24-384mm (equivalent) zoom lens, the pocketable Cyber-shot HX9V records full 1080/60p HD video, stereo audio, 3D stills, and instant panoramas. At full speed, the camera can snap burst sequences at 10 frames per second (fps), and exhibits strong autofocus for a non-DSLR. For the price and versatility, the SD-enabled Sony Cyber-shot HX9V packs a strong value for point-and-shooters and photo enthusiasts alike.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a camera that offers more features than the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V ($350 as of June 1, 2011). Two years ago, its 16X-optical-zoom lens would have been enough to turn heads. In today's world of ever-shrinking cameras with ever-expanding zoom ranges, that zoom lens is simply one of this camera's many distinguishing factors. For example, the HX9V offers three ways to capture 3D images, excellent 1080p video capture at a category-leading 60 frames per second, GPS functions and a digital compass for geotagging images, a searchable in-camera help guide, a 10-fps burst mode at full 16-megapixel resolution, manual controls, and one of the best implementations of a low-light shooting mode of any camera. Despite that stellar résumé, the HX9V has a few omissions and shortcomings that may peeve experienced photographers: The camera has no RAW shooting mode, it offers no aperture- or shutter-priority modes to go along with its manual shooting option, it has a small sensor crammed with 16 megapixels, and its aperture maxes out at F3.3 at the wide-angle end of the zoom. However, the HX9V makes up for most of those deficiencies with heaping helpings of creativity and versatility.
The Sony Cyber-shot HX7V is an excellent camera but its 10x zoom could hold it back at a time when the zoom seems to have become something of a magic number. Sony has therefore come up with a higher-end version of its superzoom compact—the HX9V—that's very similar to the HX7V but with a 16x (24-384 mm) zoom lens! Can this new lens make an excellent camera even better? The Sony Cyber-shot HX9V looks and handles very much like the HX7V. It has the same buttons and controls in the same places, and the same click-round wheel for adjusting the settings. However, the build and finish are higher quality in the HX9V, with a more pleasant coating on the grip handle and a non-slip thumb-rest. There are also several customisable controls that don't feature in the HX7V (see sidebar). The screen is the same as in the HX7V, with the same qualities (sharp, precise, decent viewing angles) and the same faults (approximative colour reproduction and excessive contrast, making dark greys block together and saturating light greys). All in all, the HX9V is a well-made camera that's pleasant to use and has a nice overall design.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V ($349 MSRP) is packed with so many features, we're not sure how they're going to fit them all on the box art. The list is truly stunning, and it's likely that you'll take months to master them all. But for all its features, we were sorely disappointed by the handling. It's bad enough that we strongly recommend you handle it for yourself before you place that pre-order. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V is neither repulsive nor terrible attractive. When taking in its various dials, buttons, and patches of grip surface, that it's a step above the standard point and shoot, so in that sense the design is quite successful: it advertises its wares with a mere look. But it lacks the sleek simplicity of the more stylish ultracompacts, as the sophistication of something like the Fuji X100. The Sony DSC-HX9V is not the simplest camera to use, at least as far as we could judge. Let’s forget about the fact that the menus were in Japanese. We picked up two Panasonic cameras with Japanese menus and had no problem zipping around the menu, making exposure and white balance changes with the greatest of ease.
