Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W690 review

The Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W690 was announced in February as part of a trio of stylish and slim compact cameras.Although it's not quite as slim as the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-WX100, the Sony W690 is no porker, cramming in a 10x optical zoom lens in its 21.7mm deep body. Not only that, it also has a 16 million pixel 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor. That lens starts at an equivalent focal length of 25mm and rises up to 250mm at the telephoto lens. Unlike some of Sony's other compact cameras, it doesn't feature Clear Zoom technology to digitally boost the zoom capability of the camera.Other features on this tiny camera include a Bionz processor, face detection, smile shutter and an in-built guide to using the camera. Pretty squarely targeted at casual users, a number of creative options have been included to attract the Instagram crowd.First up we have four digital filters, or 'Picture Effects', to use Sony's parlance, such as Toy Camera, Pop Colour and Partial Colour. Secondly, Sony's Sweep Panorama enables super-wide images to be captured by sweeping the camera across a scene and then stitching the resulting images together in one picture.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is the slower, less talented sibling of the Cyber-shot DSC-WX150. It has the same lens, ultracompact body, and a 3-inch LCD (though half the resolution), but after that, things go downhill for this little point-and-shoot. The W690 uses a 16-megapixel CCD instead of the 18-megapixel Sony Exmor R CMOS sensor. On the surface that might seem like just some megapixels, but the difference in sensor type is more important, with the CCD dragging down shooting performance and low-light photo quality. The W690 also doesn't share the WX150's fast autofocus system. On top of that, you lose a lot of shooting options -- such as Sony's Superior Auto mode, high-res panorama images, 10fps burst shooting, and full-HD movie capture -- because of the sensor change. The W690 is a decent camera if you're just in need of a simple walking-around camera with a 10x zoom lens for shooting still subjects in good lighting, but the $50 to $80 price difference between the two models isn't worth the sacrifice in features and performance. Photo quality from the W690 is very good for its class, but like most compact cameras -- particularly those with CCD sensors -- it still stumbles at higher ISOs.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 review

Where compact pocket cameras like this are concerned, the objects most often used to describe their size are decks of cards or cigarette packets. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is smaller still. It's slim, good looking, and boasts some impressive specs. The camera has also been stripped of complex controls to appeal to novice photographers. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W690 can be yours for around £130. If what's left to tweak is still beyond your abilities, then switch to easy mode to enlarge the menu font and strip it down to a single option: image size. The larger font is great for anyone with a visual impairment, but it's a shame Sony hasn't applied it across the board -- when you press a hardware control to switch on the flash or activate the timer, it uses the same small font as usual. The Cyber-shot DSC-W690 is easy to master, with complex settings kept to a minimum, but the screen could be better. The one concession it makes to more advanced controls is the program setting, which gives you access to white balance, focus, metering mode and sensitivity (from ISO 80 to ISO 800 in this mode, although the absolute maximum in other modes is ISO 3,200, with an auto setting for general use and compensation of +/-2EV in 1/3EV steps).
