Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V

Review Summary: Offering an impressive 30x optical zoom (27-810mm equivalent) and a ton of features, this DSLR-like superzoom camera is a great all-in-one imaging solution for travel photographers, and is capable of yielding good prints up to 16 x 20-inch. Pros: Extremely versatile superzoom that covers everything from wide angle to mega-telephoto; Portable design doesn't sacrifice comfort; Detailed images thanks to high-resolution 18.2MP BSI CMOS sensor. Cons: Slow to use overall; Poor image quality at high ISOs; Images not as sharp or as bright at full telephoto as we had hoped. True camera geeks tend to look down their noses at superzoom cameras, arguing that stuffing a 20x (or longer) zoom lens into a relatively compact camera body can't possibly result in a good image quality. The general public however still goes ga-ga over these Swiss-Army-knife-style cameras, which offer a ton of features in a portable package for not a lot of money. Indeed, if you've gone on a trip to a popular tourist destination lately, you probably saw as many superzoom cameras as digital SLRs and compact system cameras combined.

Sony Cyber-shot HX200V

Sony knows how to make a great superzoom camera. Last year's model, the Cyber-shot HX100V, has been sitting near the top of our overall point-and-shoot rankings since we reviewed it, and it still holds up nearly a year later. It's easy to rest on your laurels when you've created something great, so perhaps it's no surprise that the new HX200V is a very safe update. The body is largely unchanged, keeping the same 30x zoom ratio, same lens ring, same electronic viewfinder, and basically the same button layout. Really, the only significant change is the new sensor, bumped up to a massive 18.2 megapixels. With an impressive roster of new superzooms on the market—many of them boasting longer zoom ranges, brighter lenses, and more control than ever before—can the HX200V compete with relatively few changes aside from its risky pixel-count boost? In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops.

Sony Cyber-shot HX200V review

The Sony HX200V is an 18.2 Megapixel super-zoom camera with a 30x stabilised optical zoom lens and an articulated 3 inch LCD screen. Launched in February 2012 it replaces the HX100V. Apart from an additional 2 million pixels over its predecessor, the HX200V features a faster AF system, improved battery life and Clear Image digital zoom which extends the range by a factor of two to an equivalent maximum of 1620mm. The HX200V has a 3 inch flip-up LCD which, with 921k pixel resolution provides a highly detailed view and a 0.2in, 201k dot electronic viewfinder. As you'd expect from Sony it's not short on gadgets and features and as well as two intelligent auto modes, 3D shooting, Sweep Panorama and 3D panorama, it also offers a range of stacking modes designed to get good results in low light. Finally, it's fitted with a GPS receiver to automatically tag images with geopositional data. The HX100V marked Sony's return to the super-zoom market following a two year gap after the introduction of its first super-zoom, the HX1. The HX100V has proved a popular model , but does it's successor add enough to the mix to keep it in contention with competing models from Panasonic and Fujifilm? I've tested it alongside the Panasonic Lumix FZ60 / FZ62 and the Fujifilm FinePix HS30 EXR.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V

On the surface -- and even a little beneath it -- the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is the same as its predecessor, the HX100V. It has the same 30x zoom lens, 3-inch ultrahigh-resolution tilting LCD, and controls and shooting options, including manual and semimanual modes. It does, however, have a new 18-megapixel sensor and image processor, giving you benefits like improved image stabilization when recording video; high-resolution stills while shooting video; and Sony's Clear Image Zoom, which digitally extends the zoom range to 60x. You also get more creative control in Intelligent and Superior Auto modes and nine creative picture effects. Its GPS functionality is improved, too, with support for logging your path while you shoot (though powering it on and off still requires too much digging through menus). Most importantly, its autofocus system is faster, giving you a better shot at capturing sharp photos even when the lens is fully zoomed in. Overall, it is a better camera regardless of appearances. The photo quality from the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V is very good to excellent, though it really depends on your needs and expectations. If you're considering buying this instead of a high-resolution digital SLR, you'd be disappointed. Like all of Sony's 2012 18-megapixel Cyber-shots, most pictures viewed at full size aren't impressive. However, there's plenty of usable resolution here, particularly if you're shooting with plenty of light.

Sony CyberShot DSC-HX200

Sony's HX200V is the latest superzoom bridge camera to hit to market, joining the reckoning in a field that's one of the most competitive in digital cameras today. The question is, how do its 30x optical zoom and 18.2MP Exmor R CMOS sensor perform, and how does it sit relative to other models on the market?Sony CyberShot DSC-HX200 Review - FeaturesAs is often the case in the superzoom market, the headline feature of the HX200V is no doubt its extensive zoom. The 30x optical zoom covers a focal range of 28-810mm in 35mm equivalent terms, meaning that most shooting situations presented to the keen photographer will be within reach of capture.

This 30x optical zoom is extendable up to 60x magnification using Sony's Clear Image Zoom technology - this technology analyses the pixels in a scene and then repopulates said image area with equivalent pixel, rather than simply crop in on the image in the same manner as a digital zoom, and thus promises better results.

This extensive focal range promises to avoid camera shake through a variety of means. The HX200V features Sony's proprietary Optical SteadyShot technology, while the model also features a range of on-board image editing modes - including Handheld Twilight - whereby a series of images are captured and combined into a single shot.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V ($479) is a high-end superzoom camera that does just about everything imaginable. Whether you're talking about its built-in GPS, 360 degree panorama maker, 10 fps burst shooting, instant HDR photos, or 1080/60p videos, the HX200V has nearly every bell and whistle ever created. To top it off, it features the highest resolution sensor in a compact camera (18 Megapixel, which may or may not be a good thing) as well as one one of the most powerful zoom lenses (30X). The HX200V has some tough competition, though, from the likes of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, and Panasonic. Is the Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V the best super zoom camera on the market? You're about to find out. In some countries, a model without a GPS is also available. This camera is known as the DSC-HX200 (without the "V"). What's in the Box? The Cyber-shot DSC-HX200V has a rather unremarkable bundle. Here's what you'll find when you crack open the box: The Cyber-shot HX200V has a healthy amount of built-in memory -- 105MB to be exact. That holds seventeen photos at the highest quality setting, which isn't bad for emergencies. That said, you'll probably want to buy an actual memory card right away.

Sony HX200V review

The chunky yet compact flagship model in Sony's High Performance Cyber-Shot series, the new HX200V superzoom succeeds the HX100V, in the process boosting the headline resolution from 16.2 megapixels to 18.2 effective megapixels from an Exmor R CMOS sensor. Remaining a constant is its most obvious selling point: a whopping 30x optical zoom. Great in theory for photographing wildlife and sports, and not bad at all in practice, this in part dictates its 'DSLR lite' dimensions. This also helps set it apart from the equally new 20x HX20V model.Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX200V at a glanceSensor: 1/2.3-inch (7.76mm) Exmor R CMOS sensorLens: 30x (27-810mm in 35mm terms)LCD Screen: 3-inch, 921,600 dotsISO range: ISO 100-12800Dimensions: 121.6 x 86.6 x 93.3mm, 531gShould users want to digitally extend the Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-HX200V's lens reach it can be pushed to the equivalent of 60x. Sony claims that the fantastically christened Pixel Super Resolution technology enhances imagery to avoid the usual blocky appearance of conventional digital zooms.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

The Sony HX100V was one of the top bridge cameras of 2011, alongside the Panasonic FZ150 and the Fuji HS20 EXR. Sony hasn't changed its winning formula too much in the updated Cyber-shot HX200V, then, using the same body and lens as the previous model but adding a new sensor. In fact, that's pretty much all that's new. If it ain't broke, don't fix it ... especially when it's already a very good bridge camera. In fact, Sony hasn't changed much in its updated bridge, and the HX200V is very similar indeed to the HX100V released last year. Keen-eyed readers will note that the mode-selection dial has changed colour—it's now black—and that the self-timer and continuous shooting buttons have been merged to make room for the new Auto mode settings (see inset). Otherwise, the camera bodies are identical, which means the HX200V offers the same excellent grip and high-quality build (in spite of the rather plastic finish) as the HX100V. All in all, it's a nice camera to use. The camera has the same multifunction control ring around the lens as seen in the HX100V, which can be used to control the zoom (you can otherwise use the standard zoom control around the shutter-release button) or for focusing in manual mode.
