Sony Bravia KDL-46EX523 46-Inch LED TV

The 46-inch Sony Bravia KDL-46EX523 doesn't stand out from the HDTV pack in design, features, or picture quality, but once you look at its price and its range of connected features, it starts to get a little more interesting. Priced at $990 (as of March 28, 2012), this set has a lot of features that a budget buyer might want, including an edge-lit LED display, full HD support, built-in Internet apps, and Wi-Fi capabilities that make it a good option for people who enjoy Netflix streaming. The major trade-offs include a lack of 3D, a slower-than-most 60Hz refresh rate, and good--but not great--picture quality. Lab Tests: Picture and Sound Quality In PCWorld's subjective tests, the Bravia KDL-46EX523 turned in decent scores across the board. Our panel of five reviewers gave it solid scores of Average, noting that colors occasionally looked a little muted and that the set had some motion issues, especially in test scenes containing a lot of panning or fine detail. Colors on the KDL-46EX523 always seemed to be just slightly off in our tests. In our 720p NASCAR clip, which is designed to test fast-motion handling from an over-the-air broadcast, multiple judges noted that colors appeared muted and a little washed out next to other sets in our test pool.

Sony Bravia KDL-46EX523

Just as it was at the height of the cathode-ray television's popularity, the sub-$1,000 mark is a sweet spot for flat-panel TV purchasing today. Back then Panasonic and Sony were much more popular than LG or Samsung, but things have changed. Sony has typically been a peg or two more expensive than its rivals but is now producing some value-conscious, high-enough-quality screens. The Sony EX523 series is an example of a television with a decent feature set and image quality that stands up well against the competition. It's an edge-lit LED TV that performs about as well as the LG LV5500, although each has its strengths and weaknesses. If you're a stickler looking for accurate colors or are bothered by uniformity issues it's not the TV for you, but otherwise the EX523 represents a solid value. We performed a hands-on evaluation of the KDL-46EX523, but this review also applies to the other screen sizes in the series. All sizes have identical specs and according to the manufacturer should provide very similar picture quality. LG prides itself on its tweakability, but Sony is a little more reserved in handing over the reins to users wanting more control over image quality.

HD TV Reviews (32" and Above)

This model is the 46'' version of the 50'' TV that we tested in our labs, the Sony Bravia KDL-40EX523. Everything we said in the original article holds true--the only thing that's different is the size! The only exception is that some manufacturers fit different sized televisions with panels from different sources. In that case, our comments are only valid for the panel that we originally tested. Contrast, black levels, colour handling and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another. Manufacturers who do fit the same panel in all of the TVs in a range can expect the same results across the whole range. The only factor which could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing slightly different contrast. According to our own tests, and assurances from manufacturers, the results of one TV can accurately be applied to others in the range.
