The Sony BDP-S780 is a Blu-ray player with all the must-have functions of the moment, including 3D Blu-ray compatibility, Internet access for online content and a 2D-to-3D conversion function. That all sounds great on paper, but how does the S780 shape up in practice? Time to find out! Sony has done a great job designing the S780. The glossy lacquered casing matches the front face perfectly and the two parts blend together in a subtle, stylish way. We were a bit concerned that the little fan might be a bit noisy, but it didn't turn out to be a problem. Sony has had plenty of good ideas when designing this product, such as including two USB ports—one on the front face for easy, fast, occasional use, and one around the back so you can leave an external hard drive or flash drive hooked up permanently without spoiling the device's overall look. Note that self-powered hard drives are fully compatible, as are NTFS-format drives. The S780 has built-in Wi-Fi for easy access to online content. Otherwise, connections are pretty standard stuff, and should suit owners of both new and older AV equipment thanks to optical and coaxial ports (see above).
On paper, the Sony BDP-S780 looks like a great Blu-ray player. It comes with a large and well-chosen selection of Internet apps, including a Web browser. You can convert 2D to 3D and adjust the 3D settings. It's the fastest Blu-ray player I've tested yet. But the gotchas are big ones: The browser won't play video, converted 3D video still looks like 2D, and the price tag hurts ($230, as of November 17, 2011). The BDP-S780 comes with a huge array of Internet services. In addition to the usual Hulu Plus, Netflix, and YouTube, this player has four pay-per-view services (Amazon, CinemaNow, Video Unlimited, and Vudu) as well as Blip.tv, Digital Cinema Concert Series, Dr. Oz: Tips For Healthy Living, Facebook, NHL Vault, and Skype, among many others. The Gracenote service is especially useful, as it allows you to interact with Gracenote's cloud database to get information on what you're currently watching or hearing. Sony promises to add even more services. The Web browser's very existence promises the ability to access video streams that Sony hasn't specifically added. Alas, the browser doesn't support Flash, which makes most Internet video streams incompatible.
With so many Blu-ray players dipping below $200, it's hard to justify a $250 model. Sony tries to do just that with its BDP-S780, the company's highest-end non–Google TV Blu-ray player. It's a full-featured model, with 3D, built-in Wi-Fi, and tons of online media services. It's also the fastest Blu-ray player we've tested yet. Unfortunately, some minor video processing issues prevent the S780 from being a must-have, but it will probably still please anyone looking for an all-in-one Blu-ray player. DesignThe S780's body is elegant and simple, nearly identical to the other Blu-ray players in Sony's line-up. At 1.6 by 16.9 by 7.5 inches (HWD), the player is just slightly larger than Sony's low-end player, the BDP-S380 ($109.99, 3.5 stars). The front panel is almost completely flat and glossy black, distinguished only by a sharp lip on the bottom edge that holds the Power button on the left side; Play, Pause, and Eject buttons on the center-right; and a USB port on the far right. On the back of the player you'll find the basic HDMI, component, and composite video outputs, as well as coaxial and optical audio outputs, an Ethernet port, and a USB port for loading external storage.
