Mirrorless system cameras get all the attention these days, but some of the most innovative cameras still have one. The Sony Alpha A77 is one of Sony's so-called “single-lens translucent” cameras, the top model in the line that includes the A65 and the just-announced A37 and A57 cameras. It's a mid-sized, mid-level camera for enthusiasts (and “pro-sumers” if you can stomach saying that word out loud) that looks, handles, and acts a lot like a DSLR, but with a twist. If you need to get up to speed on the technology, head to the Hardware page. In a nutshell, the design enables quick, accurate, and (most importantly) full-time autofocus, as well as incredibly speedy burst shooting. The A77 is Sony's most advanced SLT camera yet, the first to move definitively out of the entry level and into serious enthusiast territory. It uses some serious components, including a 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, 2.4-million OLED electronic viewfinder, and a 3-inch, 921,000-pixel LCD mounted on a hinge and an extending arm for extra articulation. Those chops can compete with the division's heavy hitters, including the Nikon D7000 and Pentax K-5, and the dash of new technology lends it an air of added excitement. Let's see how it holds up under scrutiny.
The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is Sony's flagship SLT camera. Announced in August 2011 alongside the simpler A65 it features a 24.3 Megapixel APS-C sensor, 12fps continuous shooting with AF, full 1080p HD video at 50 or 60 frames per second and a 2.4 million pixel ultra high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder. Like all SLT models, the A77 has a fixed semi-transparent mirror which diverts some of the light entering the lens to a new 19-point phase-detect AF array. Unlike traditional DSLRs where the phase-detect AF system is bypassed during live view and movies, it uniquely remains active on the SLT at all times, allowing fast and continuous auto-focusing whatever you're shooting. The SLT architecture negates the need for a flip up mirror, so the optical viewfinder found in conventional SLRs is replaced by an EVF with full-time live view. The 2.4 million pixel OLED EFV that the A77 shares with Sony's flagship NEX-7 compact system camera pushes EVF performance to a new level, overcoming many (though not all) of the criticisms made of earlier attempts both by Sony and other manufacturers. There's also a cantilevered 3 inch LCD screen that's more versatile than conventional hinged screens and a backlit LCD top panel.
The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 has been a long time coming — the company's latest DSLR was announced in August, but production delays have kept it from being widely available even now. Many people have waited eagerly for it, though, and with good reason: the 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor (the same one that does so well in the A77's smaller cousin, the NEX-7) promises huge, beautiful images, and Sony claims the camera can shoot 12 frames per second. It also features the same translucent mirror we've seen in other Sony DSLRs, which has typically led to a huge improvement in focusing performance. It all sounds great, but at $1,999.99 with a kit lens, the A77 is encroaching on Nikon's and Canon's territory — and that's a hard battle to win against the two camera giants. How does Sony fare? Read on. Hardware / design There's no two ways about it: the A77 is a big, heavy camera. The body itself weighs a relatively average 1.4 pounds, but the kit lens adds another 1.3; you won't forget you're carrying this camera around. At 5.75 inches wide by 4.13 inches tall and 3.25 inches deep, its footprint is also considerably larger than a camera like the Canon 7D, the A77's mid-range APS-C competitor.
The Alpha 77 ($1,999.99 direct with 16-50mm lens) is the flagship APS-C D-SLR camera in the Sony lineup, coming in only second to the full-frame Alpha 900 ($2,699.99 body only) in price. Like Sony's other current APS-C D-SLRs, the camera features a fixed pellicle mirror and an electronic viewfinder—both departures from traditional SLR designs. Another departure is the kit lens—rather than bundle a low-end 18-55mm zoom, Sony has included a 16-50mm f/2.8 zoom that does a great job in keeping up with the impressive 24-megapixel CMOS sensor. When you add in the ability to shoot at 10.3 frames per second, a built-in GPS, 1080p60 video with continuous autofocus, and good high ISO performance, you have a D-SLR that easily ousts the well-aged Nikon D300 ($1,800, 4.5 stars) as our Editors' Choice for high-end D-SLRs. Design and Features You only need pick up the Alpha 77 to feel the care that was put into its design. At 1.6 pounds the camera itself doesn't weigh much more than its smaller sibling, the 1.4-pound Alpha 65 ($999.99 with lens, 4 stars). The 16-50mm f/2.8 lens is bigger and heavier than the 7.4-ounce 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom included with the a65—it comes in at 1.3 pounds on its own.
Sony Alpha A77 Review: As it turns out, all of the A77's I used both prior to announcement by Sony and afterwards were final production cameras. At least they were in terms of image quality (used 1.02 for most of the testing). In total I have used three separate A77's and know this camera quite well as a result. A new firmware upgrade (v1.03) gives a few tweaks to the overall operational performance of the A77 but from what I've seen first hand and gathered, they aren't substantial. Therefore, I offer to you my final review of the A77, as it stands today based on the current firmware version 1.03. Since I've already completed a couple articles on the A77 (First Impressions and Preview) there's not a whole lot more to go into regarding my final summary. However, a few key topics haven't been discussed which I shall do here, nor has my final conclusion about this camera been reached until now. So lets cover the topics I haven't yet with the two articles above, and get down to the conclusion of Sony's new flagship DSLT (as of today's writing). After all my combined time with the A77 and A65 DSLT's, I have to say that the A77 is a pretty impressive photographic instrument overall upon first use.
I'll lead off by saying that I enjoyed shooting with the Sony Alpha SLT-A77V more than any camera since the Nikon D7000. It's heavy, especially with the 16-50mm kit lens (which, by the way, has become my favorite Sony lens), but the grip is comfy, it feels well balanced, and with only a few exceptions, has the controls in the right places. The EVF is a pleasure to use. It's packed full of solid features, although still missing a couple key ones. And of course the photo quality and performance are right where they need to be for its price class, with the bonus of really nice video. Overall, the A77 delivers a solid noise profile for its class, and generally excellent photo and video. On JPEGs, you can see just a hair of degradation on edges at ISO 800, but casually noticeable noise-suppression artifacts don't kick in until ISO 1600. However, in photos with a lot of detail--that is, a lot of edges--the aforementioned degradation makes photos look a little mushier than I'd like. If you process raw, the camera's good up to ISO 3200--possibly ISO 6400, depending upon subject matter. If you shoot raw, it delivers roughly comparable photo quality to the Canon EOS 7D.
The Sony Alpha SLT-A77 is an interchangeable lens camera for the semi-professional and enthusiast set, with a high-resolution 24.3-megapixel APS-C image sensor. It features Sony's pellicle mirror design, which is a little different than a traditional DSLR (more on that here), but opens up a world of tricks for the A77 to call upon. The camera also features a phenomenal grip, OLED XGA viewfinder, articulating rear monitor, and 12fps full-resolution burst shooting. Those are some very serious specs on paper, especially when you consider that the whole camera can be had for a body-only price of $1399. The camera is available now, though with initial demand being so high (and the flood in Thailand delaying production), the camera is expected to resume shipping at the end of January. The Sony A77 is made of high-grade plastic over a magnesium alloy chassis, with a plush hand grip that has been curved to fit the hand. The rear of the camera has the articulating rear LCD, OLED viewfinder, along with the main control layout including control dial and four-way joystick for navigating the menu. The LCD is particularly interesting, as it has the ability to swivel in nearly every direction, while situated on an arm that swings out from the body entirely. The result is a screen that can face just about anywhere—including toward your subject on either the top or bottom of the camera.
Review units for Sony's long-anticipated replacement for the Alpha A700, the Sony Alpha A77, have finally made it to UK shores, although the worst flood disaster to strike Thailand for 50 years has hampered the camera's official release into the market. UK photographers may need to bide their time before they can own one of these formidable new cameras, but in the meantime, we're pleased to be able to deliver our verdict on Sony's latest innovation. It's been four years since Sony turned its attention to the semi-pro sector of the camera market, but the unique technology and burgeoning feature-set that its latest creation boasts is testament to the hard work that's been going on during that time. Sony introduced its Alpha A700 in 2007: the company's first foray into the semi-pro DSLR category. While the A700 attracted its fair share of followers, it failed to make much of an impact on the market shares of 'big guns' Nikon and Canon. In response, it seems that Sony has decided to try a different tack: in an ambitious move, the manufacturer is now attempting to take on the powerful prosumer DSLRs that currently set the benchmark for semi-pro cameras, bringing its revolutionary TMT (Translucent Mirror Technology) to the advanced photographer.
After a four-year wait, Sony has returned to the enthusiast/semi-pro end of the DSLR market. Having made little impact in that market with the A700 that very closely resembled the conventional DSLRs made by Canon and Nikon, Sony has spent the intervening time developing something a bit different. The A77 builds on the company's 'translucent mirror' technology, and uses an electronic rather than optical viewfinder. The final result is a product that may look traditional, but is able to promise the unconventional. Spec-wise the A77 is impressive: it features a new 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, 12fps full-resolution shooting and the highest resolution EVF we've ever encountered (a 2.4M dot OLED finder). It also uses a new 19-point AF sensor, 11 points of which are cross-type (sensitive to detail in both the vertical and horizontal axis). Clever use of the main sensor's live view allows the A77 to track objects as they move across the frame, enabling the camera to have a better understanding of which AF point it should be using at any given time. Last year's SLT-A55 gave some clues about how Sony hoped to bring its electronics know-how to bear in a high-end camera. Its fixed, semi-transparent mirror design meant Sony could do away with a conventional optical viewfinder and use an electronic display.
Launched back in 2007, the Alpha A700 was the last time we saw Sony release an high-end enthusiast DSLR. It was the company's second DSLR since taking over the imaging division of Konica Minolta in 2006, and while it was well received, its main rivals from Canon and Nikon still had a clear edge. Unless you had a stack of existing lenses, then it was hard to make a case for the Alpha 700 over the competition. Four years on and Sony has gone for a much more aggressive approach with its successor, the Alpha A77. The impressive spec sheet put its rivals in the shade, while its SLT build and, therefore, electronic viewfinder (EVF) make it a less conventional camera than a typical DSLR. Will the A77 be the camera that'll keep the engineers at Canon and Nikon awake at night and put SLT firmly on the map? Let's find out...One of the headline-grabbing elements of the Alpha A77's specification has to be the sensor. The 24.3MP APS-C CMOS sensor eclipses anything seen on an APS-C DSLR and most full-frame DSLRs, only beaten by the 24.5MP Nikon D3X and 24.6MP Sony Alpha A900.
Four years after releasing the Alpha 700, Sony has made a welcome return to the expert SLR market ... except that the Alpha 77 isn't really an SLR—it's an SLT (Single Lens Translucent) camera like the Alpha 55. Sony has pulled out all the stops with this camera, with tech specs including a 12 fps burst mode and 24 Megapixels, but will the electronic viewfinder be a good enough substitute for fans of traditional SLR systems? Back in the day, the Alpha 700 still looked rather similar to its predecessor, which was none other than the Minolta Dynax 7D. Over the last four years though, Sony has developed its own distinct style, and so the Alpha 77 has a more fluid design than the long-serving Alpha 700, notably with a viewfinder and flash that are integrated into the upper part of the camera with more finesse. The controls have changed a fair bit too—the stabilisation switch and the exposure zone selector have been ditched completely, for example, the on/off control is now located around the shutter-release button, and the thumb wheel on the front has moved down. All in all, this new design makes the Alpha 77 an altogether more inviting camera.
The Alpha A77 is Sony's flagship SLT camera, boasting a new 24.3 Megapixel sensor, 12fps continuous shooting, Full HD 1080p video and composition with either a 3in articulated screen or a high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder. Announced in August 2011 alongside the simpler A65, the new A77 becomes Sony's latest camera to employ a fixed semi-transparent mirror instead of the usual moving reflex mirror in a traditional DSLR. This fixed mirror allows most of the light to pass through to the sensor, but reflects a smaller portion to a traditional phase-change AF sensor. This allows the Sony SLT cameras to offer quick and continuous autofocusing even during burst shooting and movie recording, something which eludes traditional DSLRs. Meanwhile, the fixed position of the mirror, along with some clever sensor electronics, has allowed Sony to deliver fast response times and shooting speeds up to 12fps with continuous autofocus, which (caveats aside) is a quicker rate than Canon's fastest pro sports body, the EOS 1D Mark IV. Couple this with a new 19-point AF system with 11 cross-type sensors, 1080p movies captured at up to 60fps with full manual control over exposures, built-in GPS and tough magnesium alloy build with sealed controls, and you've got one of the most impressively-featured semi-pro bodies on the market and a worthy successor to Sony's popular Alpha A700 DSLR.
