Digital Cameras: SLRs, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

Pick the Sony Alpha 55 up and you're in for surprise: it's both small and light. That's clearly welcome news for anybody who doesn't want to cart a bulky camera around with them, but the small handle isn't all good news. Even somebody with normal-sized hands will struggle to grip it properly, and we suggest anybody with big mits gives it a real try before buying one. The body isn't made from top quality plastic either, and left us feeling like we were holding an entry-level camera—but the Alpha 55 certainly doesn't come cheap ... Despite looking a traditional SLR, viewfinding is electronic and comes to you directly. The LCD screen and the viewfinder both show you exactly what the camera's sensor can see. The latter covers 100% of the field, has a decent 1.1 x enlargement and 480 000 pixels (3 x 480 000 green, red and blue pixels). It's not as accurate as a good optical viewfinder, but doing it electronically has some other advantages: you can see how low light levels affect the white balance in real time, and viewing is faster than with an optical system. On the other hand, some people notice visual artefacts on the display, and both electronic noise and jerky movements become common as soon as light levels fall.

Sony Alpha SLT-A55V

Our testing so far has revealed that the SLT-A55 is a well performing SLR, with a wide ISO range, good color and relatively low noise. Sony's decision to try an alternative SLR design seems to be paying off, with the SLT-A55 taking good looking photos and being easy to use. The SLT-A55 takes a new approach to SLR design. Most digital SLR cameras use a mirror that diverts light to the focus, exposure sensors and optical viewfinder in the top of the camera . This mirror flips up out of the way when the photo is taken, hence the Single Lens Reflex (SLR) name. The downside of this is that it is complicated, and the moving mirror slows the camera down: it cannot focus with the mirror up. The SLT-A55 uses a different approach, using a translucent mirror that reflects some of the light up to the focus and exposure sensors, but lets most of it through to the image sensor. So, the mirror does not have to move when taking a photo: the camera can focus and shoot at the same time. We found that the SLT-A55 captured pretty accurate color, although it struggled with some colors, such as the purples and magenta of our test chart. We also found that the colors were a little oversaturated in all of the color modes that the camera offers, with saturations ranging from 105 per cent up to 120 per cent, which produces almost cartoon-like results.

Sony Alpha SLT-A55V Review

We review Sony's Alpha SLT-A55V digital camera, which uses Translucent Mirror Technology to focus quicker and cut down on size.Sony’s been on a roll this year with the introduction of NEX series of cameras, and now the Alpha A55V as well as its lower-priced sibling, the A33. Although they look like traditional DSLRs, the pair is radically different which we’ll detail on the following pages. In a nutshell, they’re pretty amazing.The 16-megapixel Sony Alpha SLT-A55V, which we tested extensively over the course of three days, has the classic black-bodied DSLR vibe, but it houses some scintillating innovations including Translucent Mirror Technology. Before getting in to that, we’ll note the camera is smaller and lighter than typical models thanks to TMT, weighing 15.3 ounces (body only), and measuring 4.9 x 3.7 x 3.3 (WHD, in inches).Translucent Mirror Technology is one of the critical breakthroughs in this camera. It eliminates the motion of raising and lowering the mirror found in traditional DSLRs. Since the mirror doesn’t have to move up and down, the camera can be smaller. But that’s just part of it.
