Camcorder Reviews

It's no accident that the Sony Alpha 55 is the first digital camera we're testing as if it were a camcorder. The form factor blurs the distinction between still and video cameras and it has a particularly fast autofocus, but will that be enough to compete with a genuine AVCHD camcorder? The real weak spot of still cameras compared to 'real' camcorders has always been usability, and once again, the Alpha 55 feels like a tool designed to be used for taking photographs, with filming an optional extra. The first detail to catch a film-maker's eye is the Movie button to the right of the electronic viewfinder, half-way between your thumb and your index finger, making it hard to know how to reach it. Putting it either within easy reach of the index finger next to the shutter release (like on the Panasonic GH2) or of the thumb, next to the scroll wheel (like on the Canon EOS 5D), would have been a better idea. Apart from this niggling worry, the other settings are all easily taken care of. There aren't actually that many of them: there's no progressive zoom, a standard feature on camcorders. On a camera like this, adjusting the focal length is done manually, using the lens, and is best done before you start filming.

Sony Alpha A55 review

The first of two ‘SLT' cameras to be released, the Sony Alpha A55 really is something quite special. Unlike a DSLR, Sony's latest A55 creation uses translucent mirror technology that enables super-fast phase-detection AF during live view, plus  a rapid 10fps continuous shooting mode. And all for less than 700. Will the Alpha A55 and, indeed, this new technology see off its DSLR rivals? At present, the A55 is the highest-specified  SLT in the Alpha stable, though there's the promise of more to come in the future. With  a 16.2-megapixel APS HD CMOS sensor at  its heart, it's possible to shoot high-resolution images up to ISO 12,800, with the option  to record 1080i HD movies as well. Added  to this is Sony's SteadyShot Inside image stabilisation system, whereby the sensor is designed to shift in order to counter shake from whatever lens (Sony A-mount or older Konica/Minolta-fit) is attached to the front. Where the A55 truly excels is with its super-fast shooting capability. Whereas most cameras at this level are capable of shooting a few frames per second, their autofocus systems tend not to be able to predict focus or track moving subjects.

Sony Alpha SLT-A55

The first step in taking a photo is to point the camera in the right direction. But to know what that right direction is, you need a viewfinder. The problem with designing a viewfinder is that the lens on the camera is located in front of the image sensor, so it’s difficult to get your eye directly behind the lens. SLRs get around this problem by using a flip-up mirror to bounce light into the optical viewfinder. Most digital cameras, though, simply use the LCD screen on the back of the camera to show the current framing. The Sony Alpha SLT-A55 is a new interchangable-lens camera that looks a lot like a traditional SLR. But, like a lot of its competitors, it lets you switch between the rear LCD screen and a small electronic viewfinder located where the viewfinder on an SLR would be. The difference between the A55 and every other modern-day digital camera is that Sony has placed a translucent mirror in front of the image sensor. It doesn’t move, like the mirror in an SLR, and because it’s mostly transparent, the bulk of the light coming through the lens passes on to the sensor. A tiny bit, though, gets bounced upward to the camera’s autofocus sensors.
