The best things come in small packages with comically large lenses. The Alpha NEX-C3 is Sony's entry-level compact mirrorless system camera stable, and the best way for casual photographers to step up from a point-and-shoot or smartphone to a proper sharpshooter. Its sleek body and simplified control scheme are designed to feel comfortable for novices, but the big 16.2-megapixel APS-C sensor packs a punch in line with traditional DSLRs from Canon or Nikon. Sony has an aggressive replacement schedule, so we wouldn't be surprised if the NEX-C3 gets replaced sometime this summer. But until that announcement comes, and even in anticipation of a C3 price drop, let's take a look at what makes it the bang for the buck in the mirrorless category. The Sony NEX-C3 is available now in silver and pink shades for an MSRP of $599.99, including an 18-55mm kit lens (street prices are significantly lower). The NEX-C3 looks like a beefed-up Cyber-shot point-and-shoot—a signal to casual photographers that this serious camera isn’t really so complicated or intimidating. The body itself is mostly plastic, smaller than any DSLR and even most mirrorless system cameras, though the huge lens unbalances the design a bit.
After making a splash in 2010 with very aggressive NEX-5 and the more moderate NEX-3, Sony returned just over a year later to announce the more conservatively styled Sony Alpha NEX-C3. Aggression has merged with moderation to create a handsome successor that is smaller than its predecessors, and probably more broadly appealing. While the NEX-5 in particular was designed to emphasize its extremely small size, the NEX-C3 was designed to make such diminutiveness look easy, with soft curves and subtle accents. Packed with unique Sony features like Handheld Twilight and Sweep Panorama, the Sony NEX-C3 adds a few new features, like Picture Effects filters, and an Intelligent Auto with simple adjustments that replace terms like White Balance with simpler descriptions like Color, which has a scale ranging from Warm to Cool. We've seen something similar in the Olympus Pen cameras. Providing a smaller grip than either of its predecessors, the Sony NEX-C3 is at times a little more difficult to hold, especially compared to the NEX-5's steeper grip. However, when I adjust my grip, pressing the right side of the camera into my fingers rather than my palm, as I do with pocket cameras, I find the NEX-C3 is easy enough to hold in most situations.
The Sony Alpha NEX-C3 marks the second generation of what Sony calls its 'compact system camera' range and the rest of us are beginning to refer as 'mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras', or ILCs. The unique attraction of the NEX range is that it is based on the APS-C sensor format commonly used in DSLRs and can therefore offer comparable image quality and noise performance. Sony's first generation NEX models featured minimal physical controls and a user interface designed for novices; its target market was point-and-shoot upgraders. They later accommodated the desires of more advanced photographers with firmware upgrades to improve usability, increase customisation options and add new features. With the launch of the entry-level NEX-C3 in June 2011 followed by the more advanced NEX-5N and NEX-7 Sony, like Olympus and Panasonic, now has a range that addresses both markets The NEX-C3's newly designed sensor adds an extra 2 Megapixels to the 14.2 Megapixel sensors of the original NEX-3 and NEX-5 models. The body has been redesigned and is smaller than both the NEX-3 and NEX-5. The NEX-C3's best quality video mode is 720p at 30 frames per second.
Compact system cameras (CSCs) such as the Sony NEX-C3 are all the rage at the moment. Their promise of DSLR-quality images from a lightweight compact camera form is certainly a tantalising prospect, for snap-shooters and enthusiasts alike. As the Sony NEX-C3's system differs substantially to Sony's Alpha range of DSLRs, a new lens mount and range of optics have been designed specifically for it. A small selection of E-mount lenses is available, including the 18-55mm kit lens supplied with this compact camera. Other lenses include an 18-200mm lens, a 16mm f/2.8 compact prime and a couple of wide-angle converters to be used with the 16mm lens. Sony also offers a lens adapter for its A-mount DSLR lenses, which can greatly expand the range of compatible lenses, although the full-size Alpha lenses may seem a little bulky compared to the dedicated E-mount lenses. This could be interesting for those who already have a collection of Sony or Minolta autofocus lenses. However, only lenses with a built in focusing motor such as the SAM or SSM lenses will autofocus on a NEX camera with the adapter.Sony caused a stir when it released its first NEX series cameras, the NEX-3 and NEX-5, because they're among the most compact interchangeable lens cameras to sport an APS-C-sized sensor.
The NEX-C3 is the first of Sony's second generation of mirrorless cameras, following the introduction of the 14MP NEX-3 and NEX-5 in mid-2010. If these first two models showed how committed Sony is to offering APS-C capabilities in a compact form factor, the point is underlined by the arrival of the still-smaller C3. Sony is one of the companies with most to gain from a widespread adoption of mirrorless cameras. The inroads it made into the conventional DSLR market were pretty modest compared to its ambition, and there's clearly an opportunity to combine its in-house expertise from its Cyber-shot compacts with the interchangeable lens know-how it gained when it bought Konica Minolta, back in 2006. The NEX-C3, even more than its predecessors, underlines the company's desire to offer this blend of compact camera convenience with large sensor image quality. Despite its larger sensor, the C3 challenges the smallest Micro Four Thirds models in terms of size, with only its kit zoom limiting its compactness. The big news, beyond the NEX-C3's reduced size, is the inclusion of a 16MP sensor.
The NEX-C3 is the first update to Sony's original NEX compact cameras with interchangeable lenses. The new model has a reworked design and a 16-Megapixel sensor but, like the first NEX cameras, it's still compact, light, easy to carry around, easy to use and has a large-format sensor for excellent picture quality. The original NEX cameras stood out for their incredibly compact design and innovative appearance. The NEX-C3 picks up exactly where these two cameras left off, adding just a few small updates to the original concept. The C3 has a similarly small and slim body with the highly prominent lens that characterises Sony's NEX cameras (our test model came with the 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS lens). The camera is still fairly discreet though, and fits easily into a small bag or a large jacket pocket. The curve of the grip handle has been slightly reworked to help you keep hold of the camera a bit better. However, the C3 still isn't as nice to hold as the NEX-5 with its deep-set handle. The C3 has the same VGA LCD screen (921,600 dots) as seen in previous models, with a vertical hinge that flips the screen out from the camera body and a second hinge that lets you tilt the screen backwards and forwards.
