The Sony Alpha NEX-7 ($1,349.99 direct with 18-55mm lens) is the company's top-end mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Whereas the entry-level NEX-C3 ($649.99, 4.5 stars), our Editors' Choice for under-$1,000 mirrorless cameras, is targeted at point-and-shoot users looking for better image quality, the NEX-7 is a serious tool for photographic enthusiasts. The 24-megapixel NEX-7 includes a built-in electronic viewfinder, a hot shoe, pop-up flash, and a wealth of physical controls. It's a top performer in its class, but is bested by the Olympus OM-D E-M5 ($1,299.99, 5 stars), our Editors' Choice for high-end mirrorless cameras. Design and FeaturesThe NEX-7 looks like a beefed-up version of the middle child of the NEX series, the NEX-5N ($699.99, 4.5 stars). The NEX-7 measures 2.75 by 4.75 by 1.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 10.3 ounces without a lens. This makes it a bit thicker than the 5N, which measures 2.4 by 4.4 by 1.6 inches and weighs 9.5 ounces. The 5N maintains its slim form factor by omitting a few of the key features of the NEX-7, notably the built-in electronic viewfinder, the hot shoe, the pop-up flash, and the Tri-Nav dials.
The Sony Alpha NEX-7 is the flagship of the company's NEX line of mirrorless interchangeable cameras. It features a 24.3-megapixel image sensor, rapid 10fps continuous shooting, built-in XGA OLED viewfinder, tilting 3-inch rear LCD, as well as dual control dials. With all its bells and whistles, the NEX-7 allows a level of control that has been missing from many of the compact interchangeable lens cameras on the market, putting at the top of many enthusiast photographers' wish lists since its release. The NEX-7 is kitted with Sony's standard E-mount 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, and currently comes in black for an MSRP of $1399. The Sony NEX-7’s body design has just about everything you could ask for in a compact mirrorless body: electronic viewfinder, three control dials, customizable controls, built-in flash, full hot shoe, tilting rear LCD, interchangeable lenses, and a large, plush grip. The unlabeled, dynamic control setup takes some getting used to (each button and dial has its function called out on the rear LCD, rather than painted onto the body), but it’s an acceptable compromise on a body already chock full of features and hardware.
Sony's Alpha NEX-7 interchangeable lens camera offers up some of the most impressive specs to hit the digital camera market in recent memory, but does its real-life performance match its specs?Without doubt, the 24.3-megapixel NEX-7 is one of the most lusted after cameras in years. It sold for $1,000 over list on eBay when it initially came out, but now has settled down to more realistic levels. That said, forget any thought of a discount. Read on to discover why this is clearly one of the best new digital cameras to hit the planet. Yeah, that's a bit of hype but this is a good one. The Sony alpha NEX-7 is one of more attractive digital cameras we've handled in quite awhile—especially when outfitted with matching black lenses. For our review, we had the all-black $999 f/1.8 24mm Zeiss prime lens and the kit f/3.5-5.6 18-55mm glass. They looked really sophisticated compared to the silver motif f/1.8 50mm prime ($349) and f/4.5-6.3 55-210mm telephoto ($349) in our backpack. Not that we'd toss those lenses in the recycle bin, but all-black really gives the package a very high-end aura. At first glance, the NEX-7 looks like others in the NEX family (C3, 5N) but the backs are completely different as the NEX-7 has a viewfinder and two large dials on the top right that are part of the new Tri-Navi onscreen menu system.
The Sony NEX-7 is the flagship model in Sony's NEX compact system camera (CSC) range that also includes the NEX-5N, NEX-C3, along with the original NEX-5 and NEX-3. More than any Sony CSC to date though, the NEX-7 is aimed squarely at serious photography enthusiasts. Like other NEX cameras, the NEX-7 features an APS-C sized sensor which is larger than many rival CSCs and indeed matches that found in most DSLRs. But what makes the NEX-7 really stand out is its 24 Megapixel resolution, shared with the SLT-A65 and A77, and packing 50% more pixels than the NEX-5N. Other features include a 3in tilting LCD screen, ultra-high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder, and multiple control dials. It can also shoot 1080p movies with full exposure control, and is the first NEX to come with a built-in flash along with a hotshoe and external mic socket. In many ways, the NEX-7 is the CSC enthusiasts have been waiting for. But its powerful specification also makes it one of the most expensive small cameras on the market, indeed more so than some mid-range DSLRs. Is it a premium worth paying for compactness, and does the extended feature set justify the cost compared to the considerably cheaper NEX-5N?
It may not be the ne plus ultra of interchangeable-lens cameras, but Sony's Alpha NEX-7 comes closer than almost any I've seen thus far. For this class of camera, the NEX-7 has almost everything: built-in flash, an OLED EVF, a large sensor, a tilting LCD, and relatively serious video features. Its innovative two-dial system takes the predominantly screen-based NEX operation and moves a chunk of it back to the hardware controls, where enthusiasts want it. It's got excellent photo and solid video quality and generally fast performance. And while the price is high for a nonpro model, given the package it doesn't seem ripoff-high. As with many competing cameras the NEX-7's JPEG image processing could stand some optimization, but overall it delivers the photos you'd expect for the money, especially when coupled with a really nice lens like the Zeiss 24mm f1.8. (I tested with that, the 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens, and the consumer 50mm f1.8 OSS lenses.) The higher resolution of the NEX-7's sensor helps to compensate for the overprocessing, as the extra pixels help retain detail in the face of heavy luminance noise reduction (NR); that's one reason the NEX-7's JPEG photos still look much better than, say, the Olympus E-P3's.
In the middle ground between DSLRs and point-and-shoot lies a vast plain filled with all manner of tweener cameras, in all variants of shape, size, price, and quality. Until now, no one has nailed the whole package, but so far the smartest middle ground — smaller body and price, but without losing too much quality or manual control — has been Sony’s NEX line. The NEX-5N and NEX-C3 are excellent cameras, with big sensors in small bodies, but the NEX-7 is the flagship member of the line. The $1,349 shooter has a DSLR-sized, 24.3-megapixel APS-C sensor, a built-in electronic viewfinder, a tilting LCD, 1080p video recording, and a solid set of manual controls. It’s built to run with the big dogs, and priced like it too — can it keep up? And could you actually buy the NEX-7 instead of a DSLR? Read our full review to find out. The NEX-7 isn't quite as sleek as the 5N and C3, but it's still a seriously svelte camera. 1.7 inches thick at its largest point, it could fit inside most DSLRs with room to spare. This still isn't a pocket camera by any stretch, but it's thin and light enough (about a pound with the kit lens on) that you won't really notice it in your bag, and you can comfortably use it with one hand.
Sony NEX fans have been waiting for more controls to quickly adjust various exposure settings in a hurry, rather than dig into the menu, and I'm sure many had a wish list for this or that extra feature to make the existing NEX design just a little better. I say "just a little" because the satisfaction level with the existing NEX series is pretty high. But Sony took the NEX series to another level, adding not just more control, but also an OLED electronic viewfinder, a 24.3-megapixel sensor, and an impressively fast frame rate. The new combination of features exceeds what the average enthusiast digital SLR can do, and does it in a significantly smaller package. Adding all these features required a slight size increase over other NEX designs, but not significantly so. It's a little taller, a little wider and a little thicker, but noticeably heavier than most other NEX cameras. Quoting the company's specs of 12.3 ounces (350g), that's almost a third heavier than the 9.5 ounce (269g) NEX-5N, which was announced at the same time. The feeling is very solid and high quality. From the front, the appearance is very similar to the NEX-5, but with a more sculpted grip and a slightly taller profile.
When Sony first introduced its range of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras in May 2010, the company was very clear about who it thought would buy the NEX-5 and its near-identical-twin NEX-3. Small cameras with APS-C sensors, we were told, would appeal to compact camera users who wanted to upgrade but would be intimidated by the bulk and perceived complexity of an SLR. The cameras were a sales success (especially in Japan), and their influence on this sector of the market has become increasingly clear, with Olympus's PEN E-PL3 paying extensive homage to their key design features, and Panasonic stripping-down its GF line from the enthusiast-friendly DMC-GF1 to the distinctly beginner-orientated DMC-GF3. In practice, though, it wasn't just beginners buying these cameras. Many enthusiast photographers have been equally attracted to the promise of excellent image quality in a small, highly portable camera, fuelled by the ability to adapt almost any lens to fit. To its credit Sony has taken note and steadily increased the NEXs' appeal, with successive firmware updates to improve usability and add features.
The NEX-7 is Sony's first interchangeable lens compact aimed at expert-level users. On paper, it seems to tick all the right boxes in its quest to win over advanced photographers, with a compact body, an electronic viewfinder, a large-format 24-Megapixel sensor, a tilt screen and a customisable interface. All that certainly looks great, but how does the NEX-7 shape up in practice? The NEX-7 is an attractive camera that doesn't disappoint when you pick it up. Build quality is excellent and Sony has clearly picked prime materials for its advanced mirrorless camera. This new interchangeable lens compact is bulkier than the other cameras in the NEX series (NEX-5N, NEX-C3 etc.) but it's also more comfortable to hold and easier to grip. The textured rubber grip handle feels nice to grab onto and all of the thumb wheels, dials, buttons and other controls have been built and assembled with care. The only part that seems a touch fragile is the pop-up flash, but it didn't prove problematic during our tests. The NEX-7 interface can be intimidating and quite confusing the first few times you use the camera.
The Sony Alpha NEX-7 debuts as the newest flagship mirrorless system camera for Sony, offering an OLED viewfinder, the same image sensor as the high-end Sony Alpha A77, and three control dials. The NEX-7 is designed for those looking for the most advanced camera possible in a compact body, offering enthusiast photographers an NEX camera that suits their needs. The NEX-7's got a list of built-in features that would make any DSLR sweat, all in a body that's barely larger than the midrange NEX-5N. It's a camera at the top of a lot of people's wish lists, to be sure. We went hands on with a pre-production version of the camera at Photo Plus East in New York, to see if it's got a shooting experience that goes beyond its impressive spec sheet. While Sony has designed most of their NEX-series cameras with the goal of producing the thinnest compact mirrorless camera possible, the NEX-7 seems to have thrown that mantra out the window. With its APS-C sensor, viewfinder, and built-in flash the NEX-7 with any lens isn’t designed to slip directly into your pocket, but to stay as small as possible without leaving any features on the table.
The Alpha NEX-7 is Sony's flagship interchangeable lens camera, or ILC for short. Announced in August 2011 alongside the NEX-5N, it's aimed at a higher-end photographer than previous NEX cameras. The NEX-7 features a brand new 24.3 Megapixel sensor, an ultra high resolution OLED electronic viewfinder and support for Full HD 1080p video with full manual control over exposures and progressive frame rates up to 60fps. Throw in a popup flash, articulated screen and fast continuous shooting at up to 10fps in a magnesium alloy body and the NEX-7 becomes by far the most powerful mirror-less ILC to date. The original NEX-5 was one of my favourite cameras of 2010, so I was particularly excited when rumours of a pro model began emerging some time ago. In this preview I'll take a closer look at the new features of Sony's flagship ILC. Note I've decided to start using the term ILC to describe this type of camera from here forward, as Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens, or EVIL for short, just wasn't sounding right. Should the industry come up with a standardised term though I will of course switch to it.
