Sony NEX-5

It's a known fact that Sony has never really been able to properly break into the dSLR market. The giant has faced stiff competition from Canon and Nikon, and these two, own a major chunk of the market between them. To make things worse, Sony actually supplies Nikon with sensors for their dSLRs. Surprisingly though, the same sensors exhibit less noise inside Nikon bodies than Sony's - testament to Nikon's design and engineering thoroughness. Whether it be this fact, or the intention of creating a new camera niche, Sony has an interesting segment for us. We're not quite sure what to call it, but the NEX series are basically small camera bodies with removable lenses and 1.5x crop sensors. That's right! - instead of the piddly 8 x 5 mm sensors found on most compact cameras, the NEX-5 has a (relatively) whopping 23.4 x 15.6 mm sensor - probably the same as the sensor on the Nikon D3100, an entry-level dSLR, and this sensor has the same dimensions as sensors found in just about any Nikon or Sony crop dSLR. With a huge theoretical advantage in sensor size, and therefore photodiode area, a lot was expected from the NEX-5.

Sony Alpha NEX-5

The power of a D-SLR packed into one tiny digital camera, Sony's NEX-5 ($649.99 starting) packs a 14.2 megapixel resolution in a 16mm lens and a 3-inch LCD display. In other words, it's brother to the Alpha NEX-3 ($499.99 starting) in almost every way. Though, there are a few major differences to explain that $150 difference in price. While the two cameras look identical, it's what's on the inside that counts. In addition to the normal drives found in most consumer-grade digital cameras, the NEX-5 comes packed a remote drive for those serious about getting multiple angles of one shot. While the user would need to have multiple D-SLRs to make this feature effective, the NEX-5 is aiming itself at that crowd anyway. Of course, Sony's NEX-3 and NEX-5 support all the standard definition audio and video formats and video resolutions, though the NEX-5 takes that one step further. On top of supporting MP4 and MPEG-4 media formats, the NEX-5 can capture 1080/60i AVCHD video with Dolby Digital sound in a 1920x1080 resolution. So, that should explain the price difference. The NEX-5 is available with either a 16mm or 18-55 mm lens and, like the NEX-3, supports a wide range of E-mount and A-mount lenses to adapt for the best shot.

Sony NEX-5 review

The 14.2-megapixel Sony NEX-5 is cut from a different cloth to most Electronic Viewfinder, Interchangeable Lens (EVIL) cameras. That much is true as soon as you pull it out of the box – impressive-looking beasts such as the Nikon D3S aside, there may not be a better-looking camera available today. The NEX-5 essentially looks like a wide compact with a DSLR lens grafted onto the front of it – which isn't far off what it is. But looks aside, the NEX-5 could represent a sea-change in consumer DSLR photography. Inside the 110mm-wide body sits a comparatively huge sensor: at 23.4 x 15.6mm, it's an APS-C format sensor. That's the same size and format as you'll find in every sub-£1,000 DSLR. So, in theory, Sony has produced a gorgeous-looking camera that takes images as good as those from a proper DSLR, without the accompanying size and weight. Those are the headlines, but the NEX-5 has plenty more to offer serious photographers. There's a 1080i HD video mode, as well as Sony's sweep panorama feature, which allows you to quickly stitch together a multiple-frame image without needing to dig into the software.

Sony Alpha NEX-5

The Alpha NEX-5 looks like the combination of an SLR lens and a point and shoot camera, and handles like one too, with many of the advantages of an SLR without the bulk. We found that the performance of the camera was disappointing, though, with oversaturated color and soft images. The 14.2-megapixel Sony NEX-5 is offered in two different kits, one with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 optically stablized lens ($699.99), the other with a fixed-focus 16mm f/2.8 lens, without stabilization ($649.99). We tested the version with the stabilized lens. It was introduced at the same time as the NEX-3, also available in two kit lens configurations, each priced $100 lower than the NEX-5. There are slight differences in body size and a different hand grip configuration, but the main upgrades for NEX-5 buyers are 1080i video mode (the NEX-3 tops out at 720p) and support for an optional wireless remote control. Color accuracy is a problem for the Sony NEX-5, notably when it comes to saturation. It seems the camera was preset for those who like overblown Kodachrome color, with every color mode oversaturated by at least 10%, and most at about 125%.

Product Survey: Digital SLRs and Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

But while the first three sought to steal market share from entry-level digital SLRs, the new Sony NEX-5, which we've already taken a first look at, has a stripped-down interface designed to appeal to photographers without any technical background. Whether you're used to compact point-and-shoot cameras or larger SLRs, the NEX-5 is an unusual proposition at first sight. Unlike most of the former, it has a large handle, an impeccable metal finish and a rotating screen. The weight is also surprising, and with the 18-55 mm kits lens, the most natural way to hold is with two hands, with the thumb and index finger of the left hand on the zoom ring. Compared to the latter, there's no viewfinder and just about every single one of the traditional controls has disappeared, meaning you'll need to seriously rethink how you use it. The NEX-5's controls are laid out to make it easy to take a photo (using your index finger) or start recording video (under your thumb), with less emphasis given to adjusting the settings. Only burst mode and the self-portrait timer have their own buttons, along with the flash if you're using one (see inset). Pressing the middle button activates the 'background defocus control', or aperture priority mode as we're more used to calling it.

Hands-On: Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5

Sony's NEX range will have a new APS-C sensor that is the same size as those found on some of its SLRs and an E lens mount allowing flexibility over your choice of optical equipment. We've had a chance to play with both of the new models, the and . Here are our first impressions ... To say we were surprised by our first contact with the NEX cameras would be an understatement: they're both very, very small. Next to a traditional point-and-shoot compact like the , the NEX-5 doesn't look out of place. Quite the opposite, in fact: both cameras look pretty similar. According to the official stats, without a lens, the camera body measures 110.8 x 55.8 x 38.2 mm, just a tiny bit longer and thicker than the HX5V at 103 x 58 x 29 mm. The external dimensions might be similar, but the same can't be said of the interior: the NEX-5 has an APS-C sensor measuring 23.5 x 15.6 mm, which makes the 1/2.4'' 6 x 4.6 mm sensor found on the HX5V and plenty of other compacts look absolutely minuscule. With the 16 mm f/2.8 lens, the NEX-5 handles just like a compact So just how did they make it so small? Well, like in micro-four-thirds and NX cameras, the reflex mirror has been removed. That means there's no mirror cage and that back focus is reduced.

Sony Alpha NEX-5 Review

We review Sony's game changing NEX-5 digital camera which claims to feature the picture quality of a DSLR in a body the size of a point-and-shoot. Sony hinted at this camera in February and we couldn’t wait to use it. What is “it”? A small, lightweight camera with the large imaging sensors found in DSLRs as well as interchangeable lens capability. Not only that, the new Sony NEX-5 shoots AVCHD 1080i video without the focusing hassles of bulkier DSLRs, has a 7 fps burst mode and will even take 3D-ready Sweep Panorama images. How cool is that? We didn’t really know until we took it out of the box and started shooting…Due in July, the NEX-5 is the “world’s smallest interchangeable lens camera,” according to Sony. Having recently reviewed the Olympus PEN E-PL1—another small non-DSLR with a large sensor that lets you swap lenses—we have to say the Sony simply blew our minds. It’s not just small but incredibly tiny and lightweight. Think of a digicam, put a small interchangeable lens on the front of it and that’ll give you an idea of what the NEX-5 is all about. The PEN looks and feels practically obese in comparison. We were amazed as were many of the press who got a sneak preview of the camera.

Sony Alpha NEX-5

Eagerly anticipated ever since Sony floated its wood-block concept designs at the PMA show in February 2010, Sony's debut interchangeable-lens models, the Alpha NEX-5 and NEX-3 are the smallest entrants to date, with a lot to appeal to both enthusiasts and snapshooters--and a bit that annoys, as well. The cameras are nearly identical, differing only in two ways. They have slightly different body designs, with the higher-end NEX-5 composed of magnesium alloy compared to the NEX-3's polycarbonate body, and the NEX-5 offers full HD AVCHD video recording. For those perks you pay about $100 more. Both cameras come in kits with either an 18-55mm ($299.99 standalone) or 16mm pancake prime lens ($249.99 standalone). The new all-aluminum Sony E-mount lenses dominate the NEX-5's body, and they feel great, with a smooth rotation for both zoom and manual focus. The 18-55 feels a bit large for the compact body, and I suspect the 18-200mm lens ($799.99, expected this fall) will really overwhelm it. You should also keep in mind that unlike the Alpha DSLRs, which have image stabilization built into the camera, the NEX models use optical stabilization in order to achieve the smaller body sizes, and you won't find it in all the lenses.

Sony Alpha NEX-5

As the fourth major manufacturer to enter the market for small, mirrorless digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, Sony had to make a big impression. We think they'll do just that with the new Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3, two cameras they're calling "alpha compact interchangeable lens digital cameras." The promise of mirrorless digital cameras has been high image quality without all the bulk, and the photographic versatility of interchangeable lenses. The Sony NEX-5 delivers that better than any model so far, and does it with style and a sturdy build. There are so many interesting innovations in the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3, that it's difficult to know where to start. Easily the biggest news, though, is that the Sony NEX series are the first interchangeable lens digital cameras designed to tackle continuous autofocus and exposure adjustment while recording video, something few other cameras have handled as well as the average camcorder can achieve. Video is indeed the one major area, aside from size, where the two new cameras differ: The NEX-5 supports 1080i AVCHD video recording, while the NEX-3 is limited to 720p video capture. A 14-megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor is responsible for the high quality we found in the images from both cameras, and a new Bionz processor is also hard at work in the two cameras.
