The main difference between the NEX-3 and the NEX-5 is their design. The NEX-3 has a different outer casing to its higher-end counterpart. The NEX-3 casing is made entirely from plastic and is more bulky than the NEX-5. Here, the camera body is big enough to incorporate the lens mount so it doesn't overhang like on the NEX-5. The grip handle is also not quite as deep set, and protrudes less than in the NEX-5. This will make the NEX-3 less easy to hold for some of you out there. The controls are practically identical, and both cameras have the same buttons and layout. You can therefore find out more about the camera's handling in our review of the NEX-5. There is, however, one notable difference: the on/off switch and shutter-release button have been grouped together and moved further towards the back of the camera (screen side), so you might find yourself folding round your index finger in a slightly uncomfortable matter when taking a photo. In any case, it's less pleasant to use than the button on the NEX-5. Responsiveness In this field, the NEX-3 is exactly the same as the NEX-5, i.e. pretty quick once it gets going but a little slow to start up.
The Alpha NEX-3 and NEX-5 are Sony's first cameras to squeeze large sensors and interchangeable lens mounts into compact bodies. Unlike traditional DSLRs, the mirror and optical viewfinder have been removed to make the body much smaller, leaving all composition to the screen like a point-and-shoot camera. This promises the quality and lens flexibility of a DSLR but in a much more portable package. It's the same theory behind the Micro Four Thirds standard developed by Panasonic and Olympus, but rather than adopt this existing system, Sony has taken a different route, both physically and in terms of target audience. Most importantly, the NEX cameras employ larger sensors than the Micro Four Thirds standard – in terms of surface area they're over 50% larger. Indeed the NEX sensors are exactly the same size as those in Sony's range of cropped-frame DSLRs. Rather than recycling an existing sensor though, Sony's developed a new CMOS model for the NEX cameras which offers 14.2 Megapixel resolution and HD movie capabilities. The latter is one of the major differences between the NEX-3 and NEX-5, with the former supporting 720p resolution and the latter boasting 1080i, but the still image quality on both models is identical.
As the fourth major manufacturer to enter the market for small, mirrorless digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, Sony had to make a big impression. We think they'll do just that with the new Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3, two cameras they're calling "alpha compact interchangeable lens digital cameras." The promise of mirrorless digital cameras has been high image quality without all the bulk, and the photographic versatility of interchangeable lenses. The Sony NEX-5 delivers that better than any model so far, and does it with style and a sturdy build. There are so many interesting innovations in the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3, that it's difficult to know where to start. Easily the biggest news, though, is that the Sony NEX series is the first interchangeable lens digital camera system designed to tackle continuous autofocus and exposure adjustment while recording video, where all the components, bodies and lenses, support the feature. (Panasonic's GH1 was the first to take on this challenge, but only Panasonic's HD lenses support these advanced features, not every Micro Four Thirds lens.) Video is indeed the one major area, aside from size, where the two new cameras differ: The NEX-5 supports 1080i AVCHD video recording, while the NEX-3 is limited to 720p video capture.
While Olympus and Panasonic were developing the revolutionary Micro Four Thirds camera format—a larger sensor in a smaller package—Sony was busy devising its own. The result: the Alpha NEX-3, a compact camera with a huge LCD, huger sensor, and an interchangeable lens that can take photos on a par with larger prosumer DSLRs. At $599, the NEX-3 is priced to compete with them, too.Despite its diminutive size, the Alpha NEX-3 feels solid in hand; much of this has to do with the metal lens, which dominates the camera. The body itself is a silver-colored plastic, but consumers can opt for red or a black. At 4.4 x 2.4 x 1.6 inches, the NEX-3 is slightly smaller than the latest Olympus PEN E-PL1 (4.5 x 2.8 x 1.6 inches), and, at 10.1 ounces, it’s about 2 ounces lighter. The Panasonic DMC-G10K, another Micro Four Thirds camera, weighs in at a hefty 19.7 ounces. A large 3-inch LCD dominates the back of the camera, and can be tilted up or down so you can hold the camera above your head to take photos; a nice feature if you’re in a crowd. There are only a few controls on the camera’s surface: on the top is the shutter ringed by the on/off switch; to its left is a button that turns the LCD on and switches to review mode.
Sony makes a grand entrance into the relatively nascent compact interchangeable lens camera space, which has been primarily dominated by Micro Four Thirds models from Olympus and Panasonic, with its Alpha NEX series. Priced at just $549.99 (with a 16mm f/2.8 kit lens), the 14.2-megapixel Sony Alpha NEX-3 is unlike any other camera currently available, leaving the Editors' Choice Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 ($899.95, ) and Olympus E-P2 ($1,099.99, ) in the dust in terms of price and performance. The NEX-3 can compete with D-SLRs that fetch twice its price, offering superb image quality, speed, and a robust feature set in the smallest body we've seen in this class of camera. (The NEX series comprises the NEX-3 along with the NEX-5, which adds more HD video-capture options and a magnesium alloy body, for an additional $100.) Unlike the Olympus E-P2 and Panasonic GF1, which feature Micro Four Thirds image sensors, the NEX-3 uses a larger APS-C sensor - the same one used in Sony's smallest and lightest D-SLR, the Alpha A230 ($549.99, ). Unlike its 1.2-pound cousin, however, the 11-ounce NEX-3 measures just 2.4 by 4.4 by 2.4 inches (HWD with kit lens), making it a bit too large to tuck into your jeans pocket, but small enough to comfortably stow in a coat pocket or purse.
