Sony Alpha DSLR-A380

With the Alpha DSLR-A380, Sony takes a lot of the complaints users have about digital DSLRs—and Sony cameras in general—and tries to offer compelling reasons for them to jump on its bandwagon. This compact camera is smaller and easier to use than newbies might expect a DSLR to be while still offering excellent colors and backlight correction. It even accepts SD Cards, which is a relatively new trick for Sony cameras. Before you buy this $699 camera, though, consider that similarly priced or even less expensive DSLRs offer HD movie recording, while others offer speeds better suited for shooting fast-moving subjects. The 1.6-pound A380 (5.0 x 3.8 x 2.8 inches) is similar in size to the Nikon D3000 (5.0 x 3.8 x 2.5 inches), but weighs 0.2 ounces less. And while it’s a bit heavier than the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i, the A380’s dense has a denser, more substantial feel may appeal to enthusiasts. On top of the A380 is a mode dial, along with a switch for moving between Live View mode and the optical viewfinder. Like a point-and-shoot, the shutter has a toggle attached for zooming, but it’s only used in playback mode. On the back of the camera and next to the 2.7-inch (230,400-pixel) LCD are function, exposure, delete, playback, and menu buttons, along with a five-way navigational pad.

Product Survey: Digital SLRs and Cameras with Interchangeable Lenses

With its new range of digital SLRs aimed at a wider audience (the A230, A330 and A380), Sony is gaining ground on its competitors with a set of smaller cameras that are easier to use. The Alpha 380 has a small, light frame and a high resolution 14 Megapixel sensor. By including the same powerful live view and autofocus modes, Sony has attempted to compensate for the lack of video mode with a camera that concentrates on the essential task: photography. Although the A380 is a lightweight SLR, I didn't particularly like the handle, which is too small and not very well distinguished from the rest of the camera. The material that covers it is solid, but the bulge just isn't big enough to hold onto. It gives the impression that form has taken precedent over function, and we have to admit that the new curvy look is a big success. The Alpha 380 is less boxy and angular than its predecessors, and a little more feminine in some ways. At the back, there is a 2.6'' LCD screen, which is mounted on a hinge that allows it to be tilted up or down. Unlike on the Nikon D5000, you can't rotate the screen to any angle you like.

Sony Alpha DSLR-A380 (with 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses)

When Sony released the Alpha DSLR-A350, it stood out from the crowd primarily for its robust feature set at an aggressive price. A year later, everyone else has caught up, and its successor, the DSLR-A380 isn't quite so novel for the money anymore. The A380 is nearly identical to its cheaper sibling, the A330. The only difference is the A330's lower resolution, 10.2-megapixel sensor. You can get the A380 in two kits: one with an 18-55mm lens and a dual-lens kit with that lens plus a 55-200mm model. At the moment there's no body-only version of the A380, but one could possibly surface later in its life cycle. As with all Sony dSLRs, you should be able to use any Minolta A mount lens with the camera. Most of the redesign over its predecessor works for the better, though I do have a couple of quibbles. It's lighter, though it still seems to fall in the middle of the sub-$1,000 dSLR herd for size and weight. The new grip design doesn't work for me, however. It's only 3/4 the height of the body and doesn't feel nearly as secure as full-height grips. I do like the rubberized texture that covers it and the left side of the body, though.
