Sonos has carved out a niche for itself in streaming music. For years it's produced audio systems that take the tunes stored on your computer or network hard drive and pipe them around your house. There are plenty of other companies that do this, but Sonos products have earned a reputation for good audio quality and ease of use. The trouble is that quality costs. Sonos' latest product, the Play 3, is an attempt to attract more people to its products. At around £260, it's roughly £100 cheaper than its bigger brother, the Play 5, formerly called the S5. For anyone familiar with the Play 5, the Play 3 is basically the same, but slightly smaller. For everyone else, here's how it works. If you have your music stored on a PC or Mac, you install the Sonos software on your computer, connect the Play 3 to your home network, click through a few on-screen prompts and that's it. The software scans your computer for music, and, if you use iTunes to keep everything in one place, it imports things like playlists. The Play 3 is the cheapest way to try out the Sonos ecosystem. Be warned -- it's seriously addictive.
With the Sonos Play:3, wireless audio technology that used to be far more expensive—$1,000 for the Sonos Bundle 250 (4.5 stars)—is finally affordable. Like most Sonos products, the Play:3 ($299 list) streams your computer's music library, and its speakers offer rich and powerful playback. Also, an excellent free app for Apple iOS and Android devices turns your phone or tablet into a top-notch touch-screen remote control. So far, so good, but if you want to stream wirelessly to the Play:3, a ZoneBridge ($49 direct) needs to be connected to your router. With Apple's AirPlay, and iCloud music storage on the way, Sonos needs to do more to remain relevant in the wireless home audio game; the Play:3 misses some opportunities, like integrating AirPlay so you can stream from an iPhone, or even adding an aux input so you can physically connect one. DesignMeasuring 5.2 by 10.6 by 6.3 inches and weighing 5.7 pounds, the Sonos Play:3 comes from the Bose school of minimal design. Available in white or black (our review unit was black), the Play:3's front face is ever-so-slightly convex, covered in a gray metallic grille. Behind that grille, two midrange drivers and a tweeter are just barely visible, while a powerful bass radiator is centered on the back-panel, firing in the opposite direction.
