Sigma DP2x

The Sigma DP2x is an expensive, performance-oriented ultracompact, intended to capture amazing shots when toting a larger camera isn't possible or comfortable. The company has a cult following, and for good reason, their point-and-shoots are no-nonsense models designed for serious shooting, and the DP2x is no different. Outwardly, the DP2x’s look is classic and simple. It’s a camera designed for function over form, and the sleek but plain exterior coveys this at first glance. Black panels offset red highlights, with two physical dials on top for a pro-photographer look and feel. This is a tremendously cool looking camera . We were a little thrown off by the vertically oriented zoom buttons, but other than that the DP2x seems to be designed will painless shooting in mind. Manual dials are close at hand and pocket to picture time is short. This is an ideal camera for spur of the moment photography, and the addition of a hot shoe mount makes this model a versatile one as well. Sigma’s menu interface is cleanly split between a traditional shooting menu and a speedy quick shoot menu. The regular menu is the same ordered list we’re used to in the ultracompact category, but the quick shoot menu is an inventive, directionally-based design that places the most common shooting variables within easy reach.

Sigma DP2x review

Sigma claims the DP2x is a digital SLR trapped inside a compact camera's body. At around £450, the fixed-focus DP2x isn't an impulse buy, but it certainly has some interesting features and unique qualities that will appeal to camera enthusiasts. The DP2x's plain, matte black design is something of an acquired taste. From the front it looks quite classy, but the back feels lumpy and outdated. The DP2x is somewhat larger than the average compact and heavier too, weighing 260g. The fixed lens housing protrudes by a good 25mm when the camera is in standby. Switch it on and the lens extends to approximately 55mm in length. Even MC Hammer's generous pantaloons would struggle to accommodate this fellow. The DP2x's images are sharp, amazingly detailed and miraculously free of digital picture noise but, if you're not careful, it's easy to end up with unbalanced colours (click image to enlarge). Unlike your average point-and-shoot camera, the DP2x's controls are manual-centric. There's a proper mode dial, with program, aperture-priority, shutter-priority and full manual modes available. Manual focusing is also possible, although not via a lens ring.

Digital Cameras: SLR, Micro 4/3 and Interchangeable Lens Reviews

Sigma DP cameras are in many ways the black sheep of the camera market. First of all, they're compact cameras but they have large-format sensors (usually found in SLRs)—a feature they only share with the Leica X1 and Fuji X100. Next, they don't do wishy-washy wide-angles, as they come with either a genuine 28 mm lens (DP1 and later) or a standard 41 mm lens (DP2 and later). Finally, in spite of their high-end status, these cameras take pictures in a resolution of 4.7 Megapixels! The DP2x is the third version of the DP2, and one of the main aims of this updated model is to improve responsiveness, which is the real weakness of this range. It's clear that Sigma doesn't play the style card when designing its cameras. The cameras look to have been thought up by a designer who got fired from Lada or Pilatus, before being hacked from a block of plastic using a miniature axe. Plus, along with Leica cameras, they're the last survivors of the film photography school of camera design, in that ISO sensitivity isn't considered to be a separate parameter, the only shooting modes available are PSAM and the video mode is something of an afterthought. On the outside, the DP2x is identical to the DP2s—the camera bodies are the same down to the last little dot of the textured grip.

Sigma DP2X review

The Sigma DP2X features the 14-megapixel Foveon X3 direct image sensor seen on the previous incarnations in the series - it boasts three layers that capture colour information at different levels and at 20.7 x 13.8mm it's significantly larger than most competitor compacts. The large sensor is accompanied by a TRUE II image processor which takes care of processing speed and image quality. Full Sigma DP2X sample image gallery What improvements there are between the DP2s and DP2X are found underneath the hood. The model features a new analogue front end (AFE) which, Sigma claims, will improve image quality, as well as an improved and faster autofocus system. The large image sensor is one of the characteristic features of the DP series, with the other being the fixed-focal-length lens. The DP2X offers a 24.2mm, or 41mm in equivalent terms, focal length lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. There's an ISO range of 50-800 that is extendable up to 3200 in Raw capture, a 2.5in LCD screen with a disappointingly low resolution of 230k-dot, while the only shooting modes are PASM - quite apart from the intelligent auto and scene modes found on most compact cameras these days. Also missing is HD video capture.
