When we reviewed the Shure SE535 in-ear headphones, they nearly melted our inner ears with their creamy combination of rich, powerful bass and crystal-clear high tones. They're headphone perfection, but even now they'll probably set you back around £340. The SE425s, meanwhile, can be yours for just £225 or thereabouts -- but are they better value than the SE535s?The SE425s bring some of the cooler features that the SE535s introduced, namely detachable cabling. This is such a good idea, the mind boggles as to why this feature isn't standard on all headphones, of all shapes and sizes. When headphones break (and headphones will break) it's often the cabling around the jack or the earbuds that gives in first -- fraying and wearing down until the sound finally stops flowing. With replaceable cabling, the earbuds themselves can be salvaged if the cable should throw in the towel. This could extend the life of the 425s significantly, though it's worth noting that any damage to the actual buds will likely prove terminal. It also means you can attach the iPod and iPhone cable Shure also sells, which has a remote that lets you control playback if you're using an iPod, and take calls using a built-in microphone if you're using an iPhone.
Shure has been churning out impressive-sounding in-ear headphones for consumers for more than 15 years, and any new models from the company have featured mainly evolutionary changes from their predecessors. The latest update to the Shure consumer line is no exception, with the new SE models featuring a few fairly minor--but mostly welcome--tweaks. First up in the hot seat are the Shure SE425 earphones, a $299 follow-up to the Shure SE420. The earpieces of the SE425 feature a noticeable design shift from those of the SE420. Rather than the bulbous teardrop shape that tends to stick out of the ear, Shure has moved to a contoured mold that's meant to sit inside the outer ear. We saw this originally with the Shure SE530, and--for most users--this design means a more ergonomic fit. Plus, in the case of the SE425, the size of the earpiece is actually smaller, so it should fit better than that of the SE530. Of course, this newly contoured earpiece shape also means the SE425 earphones need to be worn a bit differently from their predecessor. Namely, the earbuds need to be twisted in just right, and the cable is then looped over the top of the ear.
For most people, $300 for earphones seems absurd, but for audiophiles, something in this price range can be considered slightly beyond entry level. Mind you, that's entry level for someone aspiring to one day own $1,350 custom-molded earphones, but Shure's new SE425 ought to placate the audiophile on a budget. At $349 (list), the earphones offer a flatter response than most pairs in this range, yet provide more bass response than the truly flat Etymotic ER-4S ($299 direct, ). A detachable cable extends the value here, since nine times out of ten the cable snaps or malfunctions long before the earphone's drivers die. Booming bass addicts should look elsewhere, but the SE425 is a winner for the burgeoning audiophile. The SE425 is easily the best-looking earphone pair Shure has ever offered. An easy, if inconsequential, criticism of past Shure models is that they were, well, visually boring. It's amazing what a little translucent plastic or shine does. The SE425's bulky earpieces come in two styles - metallic or clear - and both serve to dress up the formerly drab SE series. The aforementioned detachable black cable is 64 inches long, and relatively sturdy.
