Sharp Aquos LC-60LE835U Review: Big-Screen 3D HDTV Is a Mixed Bag The Sharp Aquos LC-60LE835U has much to commend it: For about $2650 (as of April 8, 2011), this 60-inch LED-backlit connected HDTV delivers decent (if not stellar) image quality, 3D support, great audio, and a few unusual extras. However, although Sharp has become a lot more competitive in its pricing, the set falls short in several respects. Most notably, its Internet offerings are somewhat anemic, and Sharp's user interface for on-screen controls still needs work. Despite all the ads declaring Sharp's four-color Quattron technology (which adds a yellow filter to the usual red, green, and blue filters) to be superior to traditional three-color LCD configurations, in our juried tests we did not find the LC-60LE835U's image quality to be hugely impressive. The set's overall score was about average, but slightly poorer than the marks of other models in its test group, including sets from LG, Samsung, and Vizio. Judges complained that some images looked overly dark (especially when viewed from the side), but they gave the set higher scores for its handling of motion. Our juried tests don't include 3D content; for its part, Sharp doesn't even ship 3D glasses with this display.

Sharp Aquos Quattron LC-60LE835U Review

Review: The Sharp Aquos Quattron LC-60LE835U improves on last year’s 3D effects, while retaining the brightness and vivid color the company’s LED LCD TVs have been known for.3D is old news. The current hype for high-end HDTVs is Internet access and apps galore (actually this has been a feature in TVs in some way, shape or form for over 15 years but who’s counting). Oh, and picture quality has its place too. Let’s see how this Sharp measures up on all fronts. The Sharp Aquos Quattron LE835U series is the company’s latest generation edge-lit LED 3D-ready HDTV and is very attractive on its supplied silver-accented stand. Just from late last year, the company changed the ID of many of its televisions, creating a flat panel with a bezel 50% narrower. With the thin bezel it looks like a large picture window - exactly what HDTV’s pioneers envisioned back in the day. With such a thin frame, there’s not much more to discuss on the front although on the bottom right is the 3D emitter for the optional active shutter glasses required to watch 3D programming. This year Sharp, Sony and other companies decided to take the glasses out of the carton of many models in order to lower list prices.

Sharp Aquos LC-60LE835U

Sharp threw everything it could think of into the LC-60LE835U. It's a 60-inch, super-thin, edge-lit LED HDTV. It's a 3D HDTV. It's a Quattron HDTV with a fourth, yellow, pixel. It's a 240Hz HDTV with Web apps. It's an energy-saving HDTV that earns our GreenTech approval. A couple of minor flaws come along with all that, chief among them: a clunky menu system with few online services and a $2,799.99 list price that's a little on the high side. If you can afford it, this big-screen HDTV won't leave you wanting for cutting-edge tech or performance. Sharp's minimalism is downright striking with this set. A narrow, flat, glossy black bezel surrounds the 60-inch screen, punctuated only by a Sharp logo in the middle of the bottom edge and an Aquos 3D logo in the top left corner. The base is flat, black, and glossy, just like the bezel, and blends against the rest of the HDTV while offering a wide left-right pivoting range. Unfortunately, like the base on last year's LC-52LE820UN ($2,999.99, 3 stars), the base feels wobbly. Considering the 68.3-pound (83.8 pounds with base) screen is only 0.9 inches thick, it's clear this is a device better mounted on the wall than set on a stand.
