Reviews: Portable Audio and Video Players

SanDisk isn't very well known in the audio market. However, with the first-generation Clip and Fuze, the memory manufacturer made something of a name for itself with two more-than-decent products. Will the second-generation Fuze+ be even better? It's time to find out. It's quite surprising to see that the Fuze+ hasn't given in to market pressure and turned itself into a totally touchscreen device. We think that's a good thing though, as entirely touch-control MP3 players aren't actually that practical. That said, it may not have a touchscreen, but this SanDisk MP3 player brings you the best (or worst) of both worlds, with a touch-sensitive four-way controller, Play/Pause and Back controls on a totally flat touch-sensitive surface just under the display. As a result, it might take you a little while to get the hang of using the Fuze+. Plus, you can forget about trying to control it in your pocket without looking. The screen is quite good quality. It's certainly sufficient for navigation through the internal menus, even if it's not so great for video playback. Then again, we weren't really expecting it to be all that good for video. The layout of the menus is reminiscent of the Zune, and allows fast access to all the different functions.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ Review

We review SanDisk's Sansa Fuze+ MP3 player, which features a sleek, lightweight design, a 2.4-inch LCD screen, and an easy to stomach price point. Smaller and cheaper than any smartphone, but still capable of playing pint-sized video, the Fuze+ media player competes for the same one-size-fits-all sweet spot held by the firmly entrenched iPod Nano. While it neglects Apple’s last-generation upgrade to touch and can’t compete with Cupertino on industrial design, its larger screen, video playback capability and significantly lower price will win it plenty of fans from those who can overlook the dodgy control scheme.Take the Fuze, blow up the screen, freshen the graphical user interface, swap the scroll wheel for touch buttons, and you have the Fuze+. SanDisk hasn’t gone revolutionary with the latest iteration of its video-savvy media player, but it hasn’t sent prices skyward, either, so we’ll happily take whatever upgrades trickle down to this shockingly reasonable price point ($79.99 for the 4GB model) without complaint.While SanDisk can’t challenge the build quality or stunning look of Apple’s anodized aluminum iPad Nano at this price, its industrial designers have managed to coax a little more character out of plastic this year.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ MP3

iPods aren't for everybody. The ones with all the cool features will set you back at least $150, and the ones you can afford don't do much. If you want to spend less than $100 for a portable media player that can handle music, photos, videos, FM radio, podcasts, and voice memos, your best bet is the SanDisk Sansa Fuze+. Available in five colors (red, blue, white, black, and purple), the Fuze+ is available in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB capacities, priced to fly off the shelves at $79, $89, and $119. It should be noted, though, that the 16GB model is available only in black, and the white version (which reminds us of a "Star Wars" Stormtrooper) is available only in an 8GB capacity. Compared with the original Sansa Fuze from 2008, the Fuze+ is a bit longer and thicker, but benefits from a larger 2.4-inch screen , simplified user interface, and a universal Micro-USB connection that replaces the proprietary dock. It measures 2 inches wide by 3.75 inches tall by around a third of an inch thick, which we'd typically call out as being chunky, if the thing weren't so unfathomably lightweight. Around the edges of the player you'll find a convenient volume rocker switch on the left, a power button up top, a Micro-USB port on the right, and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom.

SanDisk Sansa Fuze+

Apple has enjoyed an undeniable stranglehold over the $100+ portable media player market for years now - it's pretty much been iPods and also-rans. The budget realm, however, has never been Apple's strong suit, and SanDisk and other manufacturers make players that outperform the iPod nano and iPod shuffle. The Sansa Fuze+, an update to 2008's Sansa Fuze ($130, ), comes in 4GB ($79), 8GB ($89), and 16GB ($119) flavors. One of the Fuze+'s key features: video playback. Apple eliminated video from its latest iPod nano, and it's not so much that SanDisk has made an amazing product here, it's that Apple has eliminated one. And the Fuze+, for relatively little cash, can step in and fill that void. Why buy an iPod shuffle ($49; 2GB, ) or a nano ($149; 8GB, ) when the Fuze+ can do so much more? Measuring 3.1 by 1.9 by 0.3-inches (HWD), no one is going to mistake the shiny, black plastic Fuze+ for an iPod nano, new or old. The device feels a bit bulky, and is more the size of a cell phone than what you might expect of a portable media player with modest functionality.
