Product Survey: Portable Audio and Video Players

Unfortunately, SanDisk still hasn't moved the headphone jack onto the top of the device, which means you'll be better off with headphones that have an elbow joint at the end. Elsewhere, everything has been straightened out and none of the original Clip's curves have survived. The On/Off/Hold switch has been changed slightly, which is good. All of the controls are still laid out logically and easy to use without even looking; the menus are clear too, and it's obvious that they've taken their inspiration from the Clip's firmware. You can copy files either using UMS or MTP. We prefer the former, but you can use either ... Whichever protocol you end up using, you'll probably with the USB cable was a little longer to make plugging it it in easier. We'd also happily have seen a lanyard, even on a such small player with such a solid clip. Let's not waste any time here: plenty of people think that the original Clip could easily join the very best digital audio players in terms of the quality of its audio output, and the Clip+ is very much in the same league.

SanDisk Sansa Clip

Flash memory and device manufacturer SanDisk clearly has a thorough understanding of the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." We sure are pleased about that, because when the company decided to update its extremely popular Sansa Clip, it could have mangled a perfectly peachy player. Luckily, SanDisk knew a good thing when it saw one and created the Sansa Clip+, a fantastic follow-up that builds upon the great foundation of its predecessor. The player continues to offer an ultracompact design complemented by useful features and solid sound quality--and all at an unbeatable price. The Clip+ is available in 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB options for $39.99, $49.99, and $69.99, respectively. Or several stacks of dimes, anyway. The SanDisk Sansa Clip+ is very similar to its predecessor in design, which means you still get an ultracompact shape (2.1 inches tall by 1.3 wide by 0.4 inch thick), a light weight (0.9 ounce), and a superhandy built-in belt-clip on the back of the device. That said, there are some notable--though very minor--differences between the physical aspects of the Clip+ and its predecessor.

SanDisk Sansa Clip+ Review

After making appeals to moms and tech neophytes everywhere with its ultra-simplistic SlotMusic and SlotRadio players, SanDisk returns to the land of real, full-featured MP3 players with the Sansa Clip+. Like its popular predecessor, the Sansa Clip, the Clip+ runs against the iPod Shuffles of the world with a compact and clippable (duh) profile, but makes an extra play toward practicality with the addition of a microSD slot that allows for expansion by up to 16GB. SanDisk offers the Clip+ in three different capacities: 2GB for $40, 4GB for $50, and 8GB for $70. Considering that a 4GB Sansa Clip currently retails for $80 at the time of publication, that's a considerable drop in price for the storage. Other features include a built-in FM Radio, voice recorder, and microSD slot that can handle cards up to 16GB. In terms of dimensions, think of the Clip+ as a matchbox that plays MP3s. Not only does it match the dimensions to a tee, it’s extremely lightweight and comes pretty close to a cardboard box full of wooden sticks. True to the name, the back boasts a massive clip that springs open to grab firmly onto sleeves, waistbands and pockets.
