The Sansa saga has been raging for several years now. SanDisk keeps coming out with hit-after-hit of portable MP3 players and suffering very few setbacks. The Clip series is surely the best-known, a favourite among joggers, athletes and other consumers on the run. And the new addition to the range, the Clip Zip, shouldn't be an exception. Holding a Sansa Clip Zip in your hands, it feels like a Clip+ that's put on some weight. Four of the six buttons are now level with the surface, but it doesn't hinder the player's usability. We still wish the mini-jack weren't located on the side of the device, which isn't ideal for straight cable connectors. One pleasant new feature with the Zip is that it has replaced the mini-USB found on the Clip+ with a micro-USB connector. That means you can use smartphone chargers and USB cables on it. Highly practical. The screen on the Clip+ was rectangular and monochrome. The Zip's is square and in colour. The Clip Zip uses OLED technology, probably for low energy consumption. This has allowed SanDisk to equip it with a brand new interface. It's easy to use, on the whole, with easily understandable and recognisable icons.

When it comes to small MP3 players, the iPod Shuffle and iPod Nano are tough acts to follow. The SanDisk Sansa Clip Zip is neither as petite nor as stylish, but it has features in spades: an FM radio, a voice recorder, a workout timer, and a microSD card slot for adding more storage—and all for a very modest price, making it well worth considering if you’re on a tight budget. Sandisk offers the Sansa Clip Zip in two configurations. I tested the 4GB model, which is available in seven colors (red, orange, purple, blue, black, white or gray) at $50 (as of January 4, 2012); the 8GB model costs $70 and comes only in black or gray. By comparison, the iPod Shuffle has 2GB of memory and costs $50, while the Nano goes for either $130 (with 8GB of memory) or $150 (16GB). Like the Shuffle and Nano, the Sansa Clip Zip has a hinged clip on the back that you can open to attach to a sleeve, waistband, handbag strap, or any other garment or accessory. The bright colors of the Zip Clip’s cases also recall the Nano and Shuffle, but the Zip Clip’s case is plastic and doesn’t look nearly as classy as the metallic iPods.

Once upon a time, the dedicated MP3 player market was booming. A countless number of companies had developed their own vision of what such a device should look like and offer, and evolution eventually brought us to a time where video support even made an entrance. Then the smartphone happened. Be it the iPhone, BlackBerry or some Android device, our phones today make it easy to listen to music whenever we feel like it, leaving some to wonder about the future, or even the present, of the dedicated audio player. The fact that just two main companies produce such things doesn't help matters. Those companies are of course Apple and SanDisk, and while both offer products that aim to do pretty-well the same thing, neither of them take the same approach to how things should be done. SanDisk released its latest Sansa player a month or so ago called the "Clip Zip", a super-small player that can clip to your clothing for convenience - a major plus for workouts. The Fuze+ was released last fall, but for the sake of seeing all of what it is that SanDisk currently offers, we're taking a look at both in this review. First up, a look at the most recent model, the Clip Zip. This is a player that takes the iPod shuffle head-on, but in terms of size, the Clip Zip is just a bit larger.
