Samsung WB850F Review

The Samsung WB850F is a 16 megapixel travel-zoom compact camera featuring built-in Wi-fi connectivity. The WB850F also offers a 21x optical zoom with a 23mm wide-angle setting, 16.2 megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, 3-inch AMOLED screen, Full HD video recording, full manual controls, built-in GPS and a Digital Compass. The Samsung WB850F is available in black priced at £329.99 / $379.99. With smartphones increasingly becoming the number one default device via which Mr Average takes snapshots - helped, somewhat ironically, by Samsung's own well reviewed Galaxy handsets - manufacturers need to present a pretty compelling argument for the mass market to purchase a standalone camera. Samsung has therefore taken an 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach to its WB850F 'long zoom' device - part of its self-christened 'smart camera' range - in order to outrun the unrelenting march of technology. Not only does the outwardly rather conventionally designed pocket model feature a best-in-class 21x optical zoom with a focal range the 35mm equivalent of an ultra wide 23-483mm supported by optical image stabilisation, it marries this to a 16-megapixel effective resolution from the standard sized 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor sporting 16.8 total MP.

Samsung WB850F Review

Samsung's WB850F Smart camera packs in 21x optical zoom, GPS and a brilliant AMOLED, plus some of the best Wi-Fi integration we've seen.As we saw with the WB150F, Samsung is throwing all its weight behind smart cameras this year. On the higher-end WB850F, Samsung still manages to pull off Wi-Fi connectivity in a user-friendly way, but also brings out the big guns with showy features like 21x optical zoom, GPS, an AMOLED screen – and still retains a reasonably low $330 price tag. But can all this compensate for image quality that still lags behind top-tier competitors like Canon? Like the WB150F, the WB850F is a good-looking camera. It has the same matte, black-tinted aluminum finish, which is simultaneously an industrial and minimalist look – and we love it. There are far too many point and shoots on the market that look like they belong in a toy box, and the WB850F definitely does not. The front of the camera has a bit of an extended lens on the face, and the finish suggests there's a dial attached to the front – but it's just for looks. This is a little silly: It's definitely trying to make the WB850F look a little more professional than it is, but we have to admit it gives a nice aesthetic effect.

Samsung WB850F

A few years ago, a pocketable camera loaded with this many features would impossible to find. The Samsung WB850F ($350 as of August 6, 2012) boasts a 21X-optical-zoom lens, Wi-Fi sharing capabilities, GPS with in-camera mapping, and a 10-fps burst mode at a 16-megapixel resolution. It's practically a poster child for the latest in-camera tech of 2012. The WB850F is notable because, first and foremost, it's a solid camera. Unlike previous Wi-Fi-enabled cameras, it makes its wireless-sharing capabilities secondary to several other key features: an impressive zoom lens, manual controls, good performance, and forward-thinking controls that give you quick access to most of the camera's settings. That said, the WB850F did have a few shortcomings. It tended to lag (or even freeze up) when I switched between shooting modes, and its stabilization system became less effective at the telephoto end of the zoom—which is precisely where a user needs it most. Normally, it takes good-looking photos that you would want to share wirelessly. But it does have trouble shooting sharp photos at full zoom.

Samsung WB850F review

There are certainly plenty of compact megazooms to pick from these days, but the Samsung WB850F stands out for a few reasons. Its 21x zoom lens starts at f2.8 23mm, making it the brightest and widest lens currently available on this type of camera. It has a brilliant 3-inch high-res AMOLED display, which works well even in bright sun, and Samsung's Smart Panel user interface (also found on its higher-end ILC cameras) letting you quickly change important camera settings from one screen. And then there's the Wi-Fi. The camera's built-in 802.11n wireless can be used to connect to your Wi-Fi network for automatic backups to a Windows computer or Microsoft SkyDrive, viewing photos and movie clips on DLNA-equipped devices, or sending them by e-mail; to connect to other Samsung Wi-Fi cameras for direct sharing between cameras; to connect to hot spots or wirelessly tether to a smartphone; and to connect directly to an Android or iOS device. That last option can be used to send photos to your phone for viewing or uploading to sharing sites, but it will also allow you to control the camera remotely.

Samsung WB850F review

Pixels counts are not the headline draw they used to be. A higher number means you can crop into fine details more closely, but even a 10-megapixel camera, like the Nikon 1 V1 or J1, lets you print 300dpi shots at A4 size. That means pretty much any compact can hit A3 sizes and above, so using the pixel count as a differentiator -- and a reason to buy one camera over another -- is no longer enough. That's good news for us as it means manufacturers are inspired to pack their gadgets with ever more innovative and useful features, including GPS. With a built-in GPS receiver, like the one in this Samsung WB850F, the camera can automatically location-stamp your images so when you upload them to Flickr, or catalogue them in a geo-aware app like Lightroom or iPhoto, they're automatically positioned on a map. It helps you remember where each was taken -- a great additional feature for frequent travellers. The Samsung WB850F can be bought now from around £265. Aside from GPS, there are plenty of other features that make the WB850F a traveller's dream. The 16-megapixel sensor is topped off by a 21x zoom, equivalent to 23-483mm on a regular 35mm camera.

Samsung WB850F

Samsung's new WB850F is a compact long-zoom that improves upon last year's WB750, and takes up residence ahead of their popular WB150F in the 2012 lineup. This is a so-called “Smart” camera, that's marketing-speak for “WiFi-enabled,” which represents an emerging trend for compact cams, even though we're lukewarm on such applications. Another seat on the bandwagon is occupied by GPS, a 2012 addition and another late trend. More interesting to us is the new lens, which now zooms in to a whopping 21x, and offers a slightly wider angle too. Yet as we've shown time and time again, extra zoom has a tendency to reduce image quality. Only our lab tests can decide whether this lens is better, or just bigger. In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops. Let’s face it, Samsung’s camera designs are rarely groundbreaking, and the WB850F is no different. Physical dimensions have been lifted wholesale from the WB750, or the WB150 if you prefer. One welcome change is the new pop-up flash, which fixes one of the WB750 / WB150’s most ridiculous flaws, not to mention the new 21x lens.

Samsung WB850F

The Samsung WB850F ($379.95 list) is a compact superzoom with a wider than normal 21x zoom lens. It sports a crisp OLED display, geotags your images thanks to GPS, and has one of the more refined Wi-Fi implementations out there. The 16-megapixel camera doesn't do well at higher ISO settings, which keeps it out of the running for our Editors' Choice award. That goes to the more expensive Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V ($419.99, 4 stars), which has a similar feature set and better overall image quality. Design and Features The WB850F is 2.4 by 4.3 by 1 inch (HWD) in size and weighs about 8 ounces. It's similar in size and shape to other long zoom cameras, including the Canon PowerShot SX260 HS ($349.99, 4 stars)—that 20x shooter is 2.4 by 4.2 by 1.3 inches in size and only slightly heavier at 8.2 ounces. Despite fitting into your pocket, the camera packs a 21x zoom lens that covers a 23-483mm (35mm equivalent) field of view. Because it's a bit wider than others in this class, it doesn't offer as much telephoto reach—the SX260's 20x lens covers 25-500mm—but the wider angle makes it possible to get more information in frame, which comes in handy when you're trying to capture a scene and your back is pressed up against a wall.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

Camera makers seems to be flexing their finest technology in superzoom compacts these days, and Samsung is no exception, pulling out all the stops with its new WB850F. It has not only been treated to a BSI CMOS sensor and a 21x zoom lens, but also to an AMOLED screen, a GPS with maps, plus onboard Wi-Fi. On paper, then, it ticks all kinds of boxes. In fact, all that seems to be missing is a touchscreen! With each product generation, the finish of Samsung's flagship compact improves slightly. The WB850F is a little heavy—like many superzooms—but it feels like a well-made camera. Build quality is good, the materials feel sturdy and reassuring, the settings wheel clicks round in nicely defined notches, none of the controls wobble or feel loose, and the connections even have a proper compartment with a hinged door rather than a flimsy rubber cover. It's a nice enough camera to hold too, the handle and the rubber grip pad help your fingers and thumb keep firm hold of the body, and the only minor blips are a slight wobble to the flash, as well as the lens when zoomed mid way.

Samsung WB850F

Samsung's latest travel zoom packs an absolutely massive 21x optical zoom into a pocket-ready frame. It's the longest zoom ratio we've seen on any compact camera; that distinction changes a few times a year, but we'll let the WB850F enjoy its moment in the spotlight. But that's not the only trick up this camera's (extended) sleeve. It's equipped with Samsung's new SMART WiFi system, opening it up for on-the-go photo sharing, cloud saves, automatic PC backups, and a bunch of other “connected” features. We spent a few minutes with the WB850F at CES 2012. Read on for our first impressions of the world's longest-zooming compact. When you’re busy cramming a 21x zoom range into a camera that fits into a jacket pocket, aesthetics are probably an afterthought. At least that’s the impression we get from looking at the WB850F. It’s not busted ugly or anything, but “plain,” “unremarkable,” and “average” are the first three words that we could come up with on the showroom floor. It’s in the same vein as last year’s WB750, which was a big improvement on the HZ35W that came before it, but it doesn’t pop off the display rack like Nikon and Sony’s travel zooms.
