Samsung WB150F

Samsung WB150F Review: A Pocket Megazoom With Built-In Wi-Fi One of three Wi-Fi-enabled Samsung cameras announced at this year's CES, the WB150F ($230 as of April 26, 2012) brings connected features into the realm of pocket megazooms with an 18X-optical-zoom lens that ranges from 24mm wide-angle to 432mm telephoto. Unlike many Wi-Fi-enabled models that we've seen before, the WB150F is a versatile camera outside its wireless features, with full manual controls, a generous array of postshot filters and editing tools, and that long zoom lens to go complement its ability to upload photos and video to social-networking sites and email content directly from the camera. Unlike most current-generation cameras, the Samsung WB150F packs a CCD sensor, which means that its 14.2-megapixel imager tops out at 720p-resolution video capture and doesn't support high-speed burst modes and exposure-bracketing HDR and low-light modes, as its CMOS rivals do. Taken as a whole, the WB150F is a versatile pocket megazoom with a lot of shooting and sharing options, but with shortcomings when it comes to quick adjustments and performance.

Samsung WB150F

The Samsung WB150F ($229.99 list) packs a long 18x zoom lens into a compact body, but its sexiest feature is built-in support for Wi-Fi. Connect to a hotspot and you'll be able to upload photos directly to your Facebook account, email them to a friend, or view them on your TV. You can also download photos to your Android phone or iPhone, and even use the phone as a wireless viewfinder. The 14-megapixel camera suffers a bit from noise at higher ISO settings, and it isn't the fastest camera on the block in terms of start up speed. Despite its cool Wi-Fi capabilities and modest price, it doesn't manage to knock off our Editors' Choice superzoom, the Nikon Coolpix S9100 ($329.95, 4 stars). Design and Features When you consider its 18x (24-432mm) zoom lens, it's amazing just how small the WB150F is. It's only 2.4 by 4.2 by 0.9 inches (HWD) in size, which is a bit slimmer than the 2.4-by-4.2-by-1.3-inch Canon PowerShot SX260 HS ($349.99, 4 stars). You can shoot in Auto, but there are enough physical controls to keep you happy if you'd like more control over the camera. These include buttons for the Self Timer, Macro mode, and Flash control.

Samsung WB150F

While camera manufacturers like Sony, Panasonic, and Canon are dabbling in Wi-Fi cameras, Samsung's really invested in the concept for 2012, offering four cameras with a big helping of wireless functionality. Included in those models is the WB150F compact megazoom. The camera's built-in 802.11n wireless can be used to connect to your Wi-Fi network for automatic backups to a Windows computer or Microsoft SkyDrive, viewing photos and movie clips on DLNA-equipped devices, or sending them by e-mail; to connect to other Samsung Wi-Fi cameras for direct sharing between cameras; to connect to hot spots or wirelessly tether to a smartphone; and to connect to an Android 2.2-powered Galaxy S smartphone or 7- or 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab. That last option can be used to upload content to sharing sites, but it will also allow you to control the camera remotely. Your display turns into a viewfinder and you can move the camera's zoom lens as well as hit the shutter release. It'll also use the device's GPS receiver to geotag your shots. (Samsung plans to extend these features to other non-Samsung Android smartphones as well.) Outside of the wireless features, the camera is a run-of-the-mill point-and-shoot with a 24-432mm lens (35mm equivalent) and an 18x zoom range.

Samsung WB150F review

The two specs that matter most to camera manufacturers at the moment are the length of the zoom and width at the broadest possible framing. Resolution is largely irrelevant now that pretty much every camera has crossed the 10-megapixel threshold, which is why we're seeing a succession of superzoom compacts flooding the market. That's not to say there's nothing to choose between them and some put in a distinctly impressive performance that sets them ahead of their rivals. The Samsung WB150F falls into that group. It's available to buy now for £190. Samsung has earned itself a well-deserved reputation for designing beautiful cameras -- the kind of things Apple might invent if it wasn't preoccupied with the likes of the iPad. The WB150F is no exception, sporting the now familiar chiselled grip and a well-placed mode selector right below your thumb. You'll find a regular 3-inch display to the rear, while the front is dominated by an 18x zoom lens. That's an impressive range. Specs include an 18x zoom and 14.2 megapixels, which produce impressive results. Changing from wide-angle to maximum zoom takes 3 seconds. Any faster would be tough to control and more often than not you'd overshoot your intended position.

Samsung WB150F

Samsung's new WB150F combines two very trendy technologies currently sweeping the imaging world: impossibly long zoom, and Wi-Fi connectivity. But when manufacturers do this, especially at the low end, there's a tendency for gimmickry to overpower image quality. That may be the case here. We spent some time with the WB150F and both our shooting experiences and test results were mixed. In the following sample images, clicking on the larger image will download the full resolution original. Each photo is accompanied by four actual-size crops. Samsung retains the style of previous models with a smooth, modern chassis. Internally, the hardware package is quite average, save for the impressive 18x lens and the new Wi-Fi transceiver. The 18x lens is massive for a camera of this size and we’re guessing this alone will sell some units. The Schneider Kreuznach barrel is accented by four chrome bezels, but the mechanical action is jumpy and imprecise. The zoom lever also has a tendency to become physically stuck to one side, causing the lens to extend or retract out of control. Construction isn’t sturdy either, and the two inner elements feel loose.

Samsung WB150F

Even as the lesser of Samsung's two new compact superzooms unveiled at CES, the WB150F is no slouch—it's a lot like last year's WB750, but with WiFi and a much lower price tag. We got our hands on this so-called Smart camera for a while at CES. It won't grab many headlines this year—there are much more interesting and useful cameras in Samsung's lineup. But if you happen to care, or at least want to see why the WB850F is worth the extra money, read on for our first impressions. The WB150F looks like last year’s WB750—an oversized point-and-shoot with a small grip and not many defining features. It does come in a few shades, white and red among them, which helps it stand out a bit. It’s part metal, so it feels solid, but mostly plastic. The WB150F is designed primarily for easy automatic use. When it’s set to Smart Auto mode, it’s a simple point and shoot. Program opens up more shooting options, and truly manual aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual exposure modes are available, too. Basically, hands-on control is there for those who want it, but it isn’t as nimble as manual shooters need.
