Samsung UN60ES8000 Review

Were it not for the recent U.S. debut of Samsung’s new flagship ES9000 series of LED edge-lit televisions, we’d say that its ES8000 models are the single most advanced televisions you can buy now. Despite Samsung having one-upped itself with the ES9000 series, the ES8000 still stands as one of the most advanced televisions you are likely to consider buying in 2012, considering that the 60-inch model has a street price of around $3,000 whereas the behemoth 75-inch ES9000 will tap your wallet to the tune of about $10,000. Although considerably less expensive than the ES9000 series, the ES8000 is still a pricey television. The justification seems to lean on the inclusion of Samsung-specific premium features including Smart Interaction (gesture and voice control), Smart Hub (Internet apps and media) and Smart Evolution, which allows the television’s dual-core processor and memory to be swapped out later for higher performance guts. But are these bells and whistles worth the added price, or would the less heavily blinged-out ES6500 or ES7500 series be a better deal? Read on for our take.

Samsung UN60ES8000 review

The Samsung UNES8000 LED TV boasts stunning design and more features than any TV on the market. For that you'll pay dearly, but if you can afford it and want the cutting edge of TV technology in your living room -- pre-OLED, at least -- then stop reading now and buy an ES8000. But maybe you're wondering about how its picture stacks up against the competition, or about how much further your TV experience will be taken by spending the extra dough. OK, fine, keep reading. The Samsung UNES8000 isn't a bad performer by any means, but it's not much better than many LCDs and plasmas, and worse than you might expect from Samsung's highest-end LED TV. It's also more expensive than just about any TV available today, with the exception of a few models with full-array local dimming. Finally its standout feature, which allows you to control the TV with a wave or a word, just doesn't work all that well. Few TVs can approach the Samsung UNES8000's "wow" factor, but few also come with such significant caveats. I performed a hands-on evaluation of the 55-inch Samsung UN55ES8000, but this review also applies to the other screen sizes in the series. All sizes have identical specs and according to the manufacturer should provide very similar picture quality. The UNES8000 is one of the most beautiful television designs you can buy, and earns the same 10 in design I awarded the LG LM9600 -- although I do like the LG a bit better.

Samsung UN60ES8000F

It's fun to experiment, but the nature of experiments is that they don't always work. Samsung performed a few with its new high-end LED LCD HDTV, the ES8000F series, and the results are, at best, inconclusive. The 46-inch ES8000F uses several new control options like voice control, motion control, and touchpad control, to reduce the number of hardware buttons. The result is a $2,999.99 (list) HDTV with an impressive design, a solid, if not perfect picture, and a handful of novel control options that don't always work. It still comes with a conventional remote control, which works fine—but you shouldn't have to rely on it after you've spent so much money on a TV that isn't supposed to need one. Editors' Note: This review is based on tests performed on the Samsung UN46ES8000F, the 46-inch model in the same series. Besides the screen size difference, the 60-inch $4,399.99 UN60ES8000F is identical in features, and while we didn't perform lab tests on this specific model, we expect similar performance. DesignThe UN46ES8000F certainly looks striking, with a very thin black bezel framed by silver. The base is a wide support made of two curved, metallic plastic arms. It keeps the screen steady, but it doesn't pivot.
