Samsung's adverts for its TVs may push the high-end models with the voice and motion control features, but those sets are very expensive and we didn't rate those special features very highly when we reviewed them. The UE46ES6300 dumps those gimmicky additions, but still includes support for 3D as well as Samsung's top notch smart TV platform. It's much cheaper too, as you can buy it online for around £770, so on paper looks like an ideal compromise between price and features. The UE46ES6300 uses the same menu system as Samsung's high-end TVs, which is a real boon as it's pretty much the best looking and easiest to use that you'll find on today's TVs. It's predominantly based around a homescreen from which you can access all of the TVs main features including its Smart TV apps, digital media player and even the input selection screen. The homescreen is very impressive thanks to its use of colourful graphics. Admittedly it does look overly busy the first time you call it up, simply because it gives you access to so many of the TV's features at one time. You soon get used to it though, and it's fairly easy to navigate around.
Lusting after flatscreen TVs is nothing new, but Edge LED TVs such as the Samsung 9000 Series, the Philips 9000 Series and Sony's HX853 Series, and the luscious Panasonic VT50 Series of plasmas, are beyond the reach of most of us. However, if you're after smart TV with Full HD resolution and 3D compatibility, you could do worse than take a step or two down the ladder of Samsung's Edge LED TVs until you arrive at the Samsung UE46ES6300.A 46-inch Edge LED TV, the Samsung UE46ES6300's slim bezel of merely 12mm (0.5 inches) squeezes in both Freesat HD and Freeview HD TV tuners. Smart TV is delivered via Wi-Fi and includes apps exclusive to Samsung, the star of which is the ITV Player. Design-wise, the Samsung UE46ES6300 features a clear plastic rim that adds another 8mm (0.3 inches) or so to the width of that bezel, although that transparent edge increases to just over a centimetre on the undercarriage, with a panel depth of 46.9mm (1.8 inches) par for the course at this price.
This model is the 46'' version of the 40'' Samsung UE40ES6300 TV that we tested in our labs. For more information about the ES6300, please therefore go to our review of the Samsung UE40ES6300. Everything we said in the Samsung UE40ES6300 review holds true for this model—the only thing that's different is the screen size! Sometimes manufacturers fit the different sized models of a given television with panels from different sources. In such cases, our comments are only valid for a specific size of a given TV, fitted with the panel that we originally tested. Contrast, black levels, colour fidelity and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another. When different panels are used, we'll be sure to let you know about it! Manufacturers who do use the same panel in all the various sized TVs sold under a given model number can expect the same results across the whole range. The only factor that could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing a slightly different contrast.
