Samsung ST6500 Review

The Samsung ST6500 offers plenty in its compact frame, with a 16MP sensor behind the 5x optical zoom lens as well as a 3inch touch screen. This affords the ST6500 to have a sparse frame, with only a handful of buttons visible. As ever with a touch screen device the majority of the minor functions are sealed within menu options. As the likes of alterations between still and movie recording modes are missing a physical control method it's necessary to dive into the menu system, which has it's benefits and disadvantages. The screen isn't hugely responsive, needing a fingertip rather than a full finger press, and the juddery manner in which the screen animates when being swiped across is indicative of the general performance of the ST6500 in terms of the touch screen. Most controls aren't immediately responsive, which is very frustrating. This is exasperated by the appearance of sliders and dials on the screen once a feature is selected, obscuring the preview. The 5x optical zoom starts at a wide angle of 26mm, and is stabilized using optical and ISO-based methods. Annoyingly the zoom is fixed in movie mode when recording, meaning any framing has to be performed before shooting.

Samsung ST6500 review

The ST6500 is touch-screen compact camera from Samsung, priced at around £180 and featuring unusual and bold styling. For your money, you get a 16 megapixel CCD sensor and a 5x optical zoom, a decent ISO range from ISO 80 to ISO3200 at full resolution and a 3 inch touch-screen. We found this screen is responsive as long as you use the stylus provided, it doesn't work quite so well with fingers. There are also 4 focusing modes, although 2 are touch screen related. The centre AF and multi AF work in the traditional way, while the touch options will focus on the point you touch on the screen. The smart touch AF takes things one step further and will lock onto and track the point you touch until you take a picture in the traditional way.The ST6500 features a host of modes and options which are accessed by pressing the home button on the back of the camera. Unfortunately, there's no obvious order to these modes, with some playback options appearing in the middle of the recording options. It would be nice to see each page dedicated to specific modes for example, capture, editing and video shooting.

Samsung ST6500 review

If you've got £150 burning a camera-shaped hole in your pocket, you might find it hard to choose a snapper, given the sheer number available at this price. Apart from its slim design, what does the Samsung ST6500 offer to convince buyers to part with their cash? Specs-wise, the camera pushes almost all the right buttons, with a 16.1-megapixel sensor handling all the image-capturing duties and a wide-angle (26mm) lens with 5x optical zoom magnification. Also on hand is hybrid image stabilisation that combines optical and digital anti-shake techniques. High-definition movies can be recorded at up to a 720p resolution, and an HDMI output socket lets you play them back on the big screen. Sound is, sadly, only captured in mono. The ST6500 bears one of Samsung's more unusual designs. Stood on a flat surface, the camera leans backwards at a 7 degree angle. A stylish, wave-like curve finishes off the top edge, rounding neatly over the lens housing. As well as looking smart, Samsung reckons the design has a practical use too. It's supposed to make it easier for you to take self-portraits. Still, you won't be able to compose your shot, since the screen is on the rear. Brightly lit subjects are rendered with plenty of detail. Images are crisp and bold colours stand out well.
