Samsung SP-H03

If the Samsung SP-H03 ($300 street) succeeds in nothing else, it challenges our working definition of pico projectors as small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. It's shaped like a slightly oversize Rubik's Cube with the top cut off, making it too thick to fit in a shirt pocket. But odd shape or not, it's small enough to qualify for the pico category and brighter than most of the competition, which by itself is enough to make it worth considering. The SP-H03 stands out for its widescreen format as well. Much like the Editors' Choice Optoma PK301 Pico Pocket Projector ($400 street, 4 stars), it's built around a red-green-blue LED light source and a DLP chip with a native 854 by 480 resolution, one of the more common variations on wide VGA. It also offers much the same flexibility as the PK301 for image sources. It not only can connect to a computer or video source but can read files from its 1GB internal memory, USB memory (meaning any device that works like a USB drive), and microSD cards. This lets you give presentations or show photos and video without needing your laptop or a video source.

Reviews: Video Projectors

Look at this little Samsung projector! The SP-H03 is a mini type model with a Texas Instruments DLP chip. Samsung has announced a veritable concentration of power in the palm of the hand. Lets check it out! As always, it's impressive to see how a projector of this type can be held in one hand. With its battery (2h battery life in eco mode), it is a good deal bigger but remains nevertheless compact. The SP-H03 has a 1W speaker that should be reserved for use as a fallback solution. It comes without a remote but makes up for this with backlit touch buttons on top. It's very quiet. We measured it at just 25 dB. In terms of connectors, this projector doesn't do quite as well as the Optoma PK301 as it doesn't have a mini HDMI in. It does have: a proprietary in onto which you can connect a cable with a VGA adatpor, an AV in (audio, video), a headphones out and a mini USB. Internal memory is much bigger than on the Optoma model: 1 GB with a micro SD slot that accepts cards up to 16 GB. No lens-shift or zoom, which is hardly surprising. is very deep. This is because of the projector's lack of brightness. Between the 22.5 cdm/² you get on this model and the 36 cd/m² on the Optoma PK301, there's a world of difference.

Samsung SP-H03

You know a category is starting to move beyond niche status when Samsung decides to jump in. The SP-H03 pico projector is a compact, well-designed device that would be an excellent accessory for any traveling businessperson who needs to give a presentation during the day, and wants to kick back with a movie at night. And at $299, this pico projector is less expensive, yet more refined than the competition. While most pico projectors are rectangular, the Samsung SP-H03 takes on a square shape. At 2.8 x 2.8 x 1.5 inches, it's about the size of a White Castle burger, and at 6.4 ounces, the projector itself won't weigh you down. As with most electronics these days, the entire device is black, as is the battery that attaches to its bottom. The top of the SP-H03 has backlit touch-sensitive buttons that glow brightly when pressed, making them easy to read in the dark. However, there's a slight delay between pressing the buttons and when the projector responds, so you have to be a little patient. The left side of the projector has a focusing slider as well as a microSD Card slot.
