Samsung SH100

The Samsung SH100 has the distinction of being one of the first and one of the cheapest Wi-Fi enabled digital cameras. This functionality is poorly implemented however, so we're left with a strictly-average ultracompact easily surpassed by the competition, both from other manufacturers and by Samsung's own models. Compact point-and-shoots such as this one tend to emphasize convenience and affordability over precise color accuracy. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but we don’t often see both. Some Samsung models are an exception to this trend, but the SH100 is not one of them. This camera’s color reproduction is mediocre, and unfortunately some of the worst colors are those that contribute to skin, like bright red. So expect people to be rendered in a slightly artificial and unflattering way. More on how we test color. These results are frustrating considering the outstanding performance of a similar Samsung model, the PL120, which had some of the most accurate colors we’ve recorded from a point-and-shoot. It’s too bad, we would’ve pegged the SH100 for the more accurate model, but the tests don’t lie. At least results weren’t as bad as the Casio EX-S200, which earned a disproportionately low color score.

Samsung SH100 review

As part of the Cutting Edge range in Samsung's line-up, the SH100 shouldn't really be into looks. It should be all about the technology, but what Samsung has produced is a snazzy little unit stuffed with features. With an oversized lens barrel to hold the 5x optical zoom this gives a range of 26 – 130mm in 35mm terms. On the back is a 3-inch touch sensitive LCD screen with 320,000 dots (106,666 pixels) with all the features and modes accessed directly from it. Within the menu, there are four pages of things to do ranging from Smart Auto shooting mode, to Video, Email, Set-up menu, Photo Editor and Remote Viewfinder. Herein lies one of the problems with the SH100. All these modes are pretty impressive in their own right, but there's no semblance of order to them. If you want to use the Program mode, it's on the first page but if you want to use the Macro mode, it's on the third page. This well used mode comes after more obscure options such as Vignetting and All Share. The SH100 features Wi-Fi capability, The camera will upload automatically to Facebook, Photobucket or Picasa web albums, YouTube and the Samsung community website.

Samsung SH100

At first glance, the Samsung SH100 ($200 as of July 13, 2011) looks like a run-of-the-mill, low-priced touchscreen camera. It's built for very casual snapshooters, and its core specs aren't exactly mind-boggling: The SH100's 14-megapixel CCD sensor may have been an impressive feature a few years ago, but in these days of ever-inflated pixel counts, it's standard issue in the compact camera world. Same goes for its 5X optical zoom lens and 720p video recording at 30 frames per second. The SH100 ups the ante, however, with its built-in wireless features, which include (but aren't limited to) direct uploads from the camera to Facebook, YouTube, and other sharing services. The most unusual wireless feature is the ability to create a peer-to-peer connection with Samsung Galaxy S series phones, meaning that you can use a phone as a wireless remote control and a tethered storage device for photos and video. The sum of all these parts is hardware you'd expect in a standard-issue $200 camera, but enhanced with innovative in-camera extras that provide great bang for the buck. The SH100 performs well in Auto mode, has well-implemented Wi-Fi features, and offers a little something extra for anyone who owns a Samsung Galaxy S or Galaxy S II phone.

Samsung SH100 review

The Samsung SH100 is a compact camera towards the budget end of the market, but fills itself out with some key features - it has Wi-Fi connectivity as well as a 3in, 230k-dot LCD screen with touch-sensitivity for (literal) hands-on control. As Samsung puts its oar into the Smartphone world with the well-received Galaxy series, the SH100 ties in some clever communicative features. Aimed squarely at Android phone users, the SH100's Remote Viewfinder feature enables your Android phone to act as an additional screen away from the camera as well as control the zoom and even snap a picture remotely. Ensuring up to date features are at the forefront of the SH100's feature list, the camera also offers Wi-Fi technology. The camera is set up to make it easy to email or upload directly to Facebook, Picasa, YouTube or Samsung.com's own site. DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) and PC Auto Backup mean quick sharing to other home devices, such as an HD TV, are also possible. Of course a network connection is required, though the number of remote connection points around towns and cities these days means connectivity on the go isn't out of the question either. Stills are catered for with a 14.6MP sensor capable of capturing ISO 80-3200 sensitivity, plus a 720p HD movie mode covers the moving image base.

Digital Camera Reviews: Choose the Best Compact Camera

No doubt inspired by the growing popularity smartphones, connected cameras seem to be all the rage right now. The Samsung SH100 boasts Wi-Fi and DLNA compatibility for a quick and easy way to share your photos with the world, whether via Facebook, e-mail or other services. Connectivity aside, the SH100 has a fairly modest set of tech specs, with a 26-130 mm zoom lens, a 14-Megapixel CCD and no stabilisation system. When you first pick up the SH100 it feels like quite a nice camera. It's light, reasonably well built, and although it's made entirely from plastic, the materials used don't feel too cheap. Nitpickers may be a bit disappointed with the two plastic bars that are supposed to constitute a thumb-rest on the back of the camera, which certainly aren't as comfortable as a rubber grip. On the whole though, the SH100 has a nice design. Unfortunately, the screen isn't quite so nice. Using our electronic sensor, we found that dark greys ended up being blocked together into one dark mass and that light greys were overexposed. Similarly, colour fidelity leaves a lot to be desired. But there's no need for a special sensor to see that the screen's low definition just isn't sharp enough and that tight vertical viewing angles make the screen go dark when you view it from above or below.

Samsung SH100

Samsung focuses on easy photo sharing with its 14-megapixel SH100 digital camera. With this $199.99 (list) touch-screen point-and-shoot, you can transfer photos to your PC and upload pictures to Facebook via Wi-Fi. You can even use your Samsung Galaxy S Android phone as a remote viewfinder. These innovative wireless features make the camera a blast to use, but with no optical image stabilization, it fails in low-light shooting situations. Very pocketable, the SH100 weighs just 3.8 ounces and measures a slim 0.7 inches thick, 2.1 inches wide, and 3.7 inches long. It offers touch screen control plus a handful of physical buttons for mission critical operations: Zoom In/Out, Shutter Release, Playback, and Home Screen. The UI on the SH100 is more colorful than most touch-screen cameras like the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS ($229.99, 4 stars), looking more like Samsung's Galaxy phones, complete with app-like colored buttons against a black background. There are fives pages of these apps to swipe through, including shooting modes, color effect modes multiple Wi-Fi functions. The 26 to 130mm (35mm equivalent), 5x optical zoom lens has no optical stabilization and a corresponding aperture of f/3.3-f/5.9.
